I dunno if anyone realises this storyline is almost a parody of a superhero film: a few teen geniuses invent stuff way ahead of their time, including weapons, but don't actually use it to "save their town" when faced with an alien "threat" and a military overreaction because they are too preoccupied with teenage stuff. I always see this film as proof that Wes Anderson actually LIKES modern franchise films as a concept, that he wants to explore their origins.
