  • Little did he know, but Ramin often warms up to music sung by Laird Mackintosh. Ramin used to stage door in Canada and met Laird a long time ago when, by chance, Laird asked Ramin to hang after a show!
Laird made his Broadway debut in 2011 in the role of George Banks in Mary Poppins at the New Amsterdam Theater in New York City and 2013 he played John Utterson in the Broadway production of Wildhorn's Jekyll and Hyde. Mackintosh began his career as a dancer in the National Ballet of Canada (1990-1992). He studied at L'Ecole Superieure de Danse du Quebec (Montreal), American Ballet Theatre's School of Classical Ballet in New York City and The National Ballet School in Toronto. In 1993 he joined the Toronto (LivEnt) production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera in the role of Porter/Marksman and subsequently went on to play the leading role of Raoul for three years and also to understudy the role of the Phantom. He performed with Toronto's Opera Atelier between 1997 and 2002. In 2002, Mackintosh joined the company of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival appearing as Freddy Eynesford-Hill in My Fair Lady. He remained with the company for eight seasons, playing many leading roles. He has also played Robert in The Drowsy Chaperone (Vancouver), Phil Davis in White Christmas (Halifax), Prince Charming in Ross Petty's Cinderella (Toronto), Gustl in The Land of Smiles and Algernon Moncrieff in Earnest, the Importance of Being (Toronto Operetta Theatre).
In August 2013, Mackintosh joined the Broadway cast of The Phantom of the Opera as Monsieur André and an understudy for the Phantom. On May 5, 2014, he performed a one-week limited engagement as the Phantom between Hugh Panaro's departure and Norm Lewis' arrival. He concluded his limited run as the Phantom on May 12, and then continued to play Monsieur André until September of 2019. In December of 2019, he joined the U.S. tour of My Fair Lady in the role of Henry Higgins, and most recently rejoined the Broadway cast to help finish out the current Broadway run before the show closes.

Ramin is a great interviewer. No ego. Just chimes in when needed.

I mean.. Laird could be your alternate or understudy in Italy. He was incredible at the last 3 shows on Broadway 👏👏

Ramin...you are a star and there are fans who would love to talk to you, not Lea, at the stage door. Just thought you should know. I'm glad you got to sing Who Are You Now/People to show your voice and work it a little bit. Just read you are doing an opera with Isabel Leonard - that will be fantastic. Laird, you have found the fountain of youth - when I heard you were playing Henry Higgins, I thought you were too young (wrong, of course). I love how you stay connected with people you met from your past. What a great memory for both of you. Loved the Phantom talk.

Agree! Not being negative here.. but I would rather talk to Ramin than his costar 😊and have a selfie.. and it would be better to just talk like regular people.. like what he said .. if we met in the streets..

I so understand what Ramin is talking about regarding connecting and talking beyond taking pictures, we live in a superficial world. I hope one day to have the chance to meet him and talk to him for a few minutes, simply. Ramin's voice moves me so much, and being able to tell him how good he makes me feel means so much more than taking a photo.

Thanks for talking about the Phantom a lot. Really enjoyed it. I bought a ticket for the Phantom Italy but I know I can't go there because of my health issues. I just wanted to be a part of this special occasion 🤩

Really great Hang - went by so quickly and like Ramin's remark at the end about wanting to talk more, so did I want them to continue for longer. Thank you.

Thank you to both of you for your talent! I was able to meet both of you in New York April 15th at the stagedoors of Funny Girl and Phantom. I wish I had time to ask you both so many questions about theatre and getting started, but I appreciate you giving me the time that you had! Will live on in my memory forever.

I love hearing you both talk about singing and performing different roles - as a non singer, this is fascinating. And the full circle story of the stage door experience is delightful!

Good to know it wasn’t YOU stringing us along with Phantom. 🤣 I do hope you’ll come to re-embrace social media for what it can be, which is like an open stage door facsimile for those of us who cannot be in your physical presence. But I know the downside can be annoying.

Yes Ramin, I hope one day we can once more interact with you. However I can well understand your reasons for withdrawing comments.

Yet another interesting podcast. Thanks. I can't make it to Trieste, but I'm hoping you will be in the Italian production as it goes to Milan and Monte Carlo. Please let us know, thanks.

I was so excited listening to this interview because so much of it was familiar! Like Ramin, I first saw Phantom in Toronto and was blown away and inspired by the production. It was so unfortunate that it had to close after 10 years. I also recognized Laird’s name from the Toronto production and realized that not only did I see the final Toronto production starring him as Raoul, I saw him in the final public performance of the Broadway production as the Phantom! What wonderful synchronicity ❤

There is a truth to the stage door experience, I miss the one to one aspect where you could actually have a conversation if only briefly with someone you admired and have an connective interaction. Now its just so fast signing autographs and shoving stuff in the actors face and not having that moment to say thank you. I remember seeing him is 2011 for LND and we had a conversation. Seeing him in Trieste he came out and thanked us for attending then went back inside, fair do's he was tired but its that shift of connectivity that has changed which we as creatives miss

I completely agree with Ramin about Maria Bjornson being the star of the show…the changed new tour is just…not good. They take away the focus of the phantoms care of Christine WITH the music where the new tour just has the phantom only care about the music so it doesn’t work. If anything is changed it should be AROUND Maria’s designs. Like in the background like the walls but not her original designs.

His defense of Maria Bjornson’s designs is so reassuring
