Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp Look Back at Their 'That 70's Show' Scenes | Entertainment Weekly
/ ew - Розваги
I think a lot of young people don't realize how bold it was casting Kurtwood Smith, the villain from freaking ROBOCOP, as a middle class suburban dad in a network sitcom.
it was perfect casting to make eric’s dad the most intimidating character
Seems to work out often enough. Including Bryan Cranston and ty Burrell
Well, that's not ALL he did .. hed been a character actor for YEARS playing middle class dads and doctors n whatnot. Robocop was an anomaly in his career.
He was also in Rambo 3
He had also played like three or four characters in Star Trek, so it wasn't that much of a stretch. He was even the president in Star Trek VI.
They have amazing chemistry, even out of character they banter like a couple.
True
was just thinking that, they look at each other and laugh at each other a like a couple. love them
they sound like an old couple looking at their old house.
They are such natural grandparents together in That 90s Show. If you have Netflix I highly recommend. Its short, sweet, and they're an amazing small focal point
They basically are a couple they’ve been working closely together for almost 20 years.
Debra played Kitty so well and made her character likable when she would probably be annoying if anyone else did the role.
Hahaha aww tru
fr
I ADORE Kitty!!!
Imagine if Fran Drescher played her and Debra was the Nanny named Fran or Deb? It would be probably equally as good we don’t know .
Greatest laugh ever!!!!!!
Kurtwood Smith laughing at himself as Red is all I’ve ever needed
Right? He’s really nice irl but grumpy in the show
@@rachaelhofer4500 Not to mention the brutally violent and sadistic Clarence Boddicker!
Best parents in a comedy show.
Love them like they’re my own 😊❤
Their tied with the parents from Malcom in the middle & the parents from fresh prince of Bel-Air for me
@@FernandoGarcia-rl6gj Malcolm in the middle the mom was toxic as fuck and fresh prince they were aunt/unlce
@@willpugh8865 the mom was toxic but showed that no parent is perfect & still had genuine tough love. Fresh prince they were aunt & uncle only to will but felt like second parents to him
@@willpugh8865actually, if you try to watch it from the parents’ perspectives instead of the kids’ you can relate a little more to Lois. Sure she was controlling and had some anger issues, but can you blame her? Her kids were always doing the craziest things, Hal was typically a pushover, and she pretty much always had to be the one to step up and take care of things. She wasn’t perfect by any means, but she truly and deeply loved her kids and her Hal. All in all, after considering her position, I find her to be a great tv mom
I love when Kitty had a dachshund who was on the counter because “he likes to feel tall.” 😂😂😂😂😂
Shotzie!! "He's a gentle creature with brittle bones"😂
oh my goodness I forgot about that dog. Thanks for bring that memory up.
I make that joke all the time!
Schotzi!!!
Red:Look Kitty, the dog has menopause too. Lmao.
Kitty snapping and swearing at Red, and then using his own line at him is just writing perfection. And the fact that it's actually realistic is a huge icing in the cake.
Yup.😁👍🏼
She was DONE with his nonsense at that point 😂😂
“Oh Arthur stop it. Stop it. Hahaha stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it. Hahaha stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it hahaha. Stop it.

One of my favorite scenes is when Kitty is doing a crossword puzzle and needs a 4 letter word for disappointment, Red says "Eric," and Kitty gasps saying "it fits!" 😂 it gets me every time
“Oh Arthur stop it. Stop it. Hahaha stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it. Hahaha stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it hahaha. Stop it.

The whole show was written well, but Kitty and Red had the best lines and really made the show what it was.
I mean... Fez had the best lines but i agree with you lol
Without Kitty and Red, the show wouldn't have took off as fast as it did or been as big.
They were the ice cream in the ice cream sundae recipe
They were absolutely incredibly important characters. The show NEVER would have worked without them. They weren't the "leads," but they were absolutely as important as.
@@jasonbower7763 Fez was annoying to me

Debra Jo Rupp is the reason little boy me developed a oepidus complex. Her energy is amazing shes always bright and cheerful.
Kurtwood quietly saying “rest her soul” when Debra Jo brings up Tanya Roberts ❤🙏🏻
the bit when she breaks down and swears is straight up genius. she plays it so well, like no one else could do it.
Thankful that Kurtwood didn't react when she went on that tirade!
“Oh Arthur stop it. Stop it. Hahaha stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it. Hahaha stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it hahaha. Stop it.

I'll never accept how Debra's natural voice sounds.. Even though I first saw her on friends she will always be kitty Forman to me
I just love that nervous laugh 😆
she's also Jerry Seinfeld's agent 😂😂 tho I'm not sure if Kurtwood will always be Red or Clarence Boddicker
I am pretty sure she did that laugh once and they said "Keep doing that' Lol
She was on "Seinfeld" before "Friends." That's what I remember her from before "That 70s Show."
@@saml302 Either way, he'll always own a time ship.
They both made this show super special. Love them.
everyone made the show what it was. That's why Season 8 isn't nearly as good, watchable but the magic left
Debra Jo Rupp is still the same ol Kitty and thats what made 90s show somewhat enjoyable! Also Kurtwood Smith is a LEGEND still the same ol Red for the most part ! Without the original cast its hard to enjoy, but even better when you get back to watching the original 70s show after

One thing that never gets old with me is Kittys iconic laugh, it will always be funny.
Honestly brings me such joy when I hear it.
7:22
I have to laugh with her because it's the best
They look amazing wow! Kitty is the best on-screen mom
Get a life
She really is up there with TV mom's. Most of them are cookie cutter versions of each other.
I miss Peg Bundy
Got to disagree with you. Shirley Jones as Mrs Partridge on " The Partridge Family " WAS the best looking mom on tv !!!
@@barrymacdonald1157 No one said anything about the best looking mom on TV.
They look great 20 years later.
My favorite Kitty and Red scene is when Red forces Eric to take Kitty out for the night and they end up having such a great time that he asks her to go see another movie next week. And then when he leaves she breaks down crying and Red comes in and starts threatening to kick Eric's ass until she says "No...he was just wonderful" and Red calms down, smiles, and puts his arm around her. You can just see how much they mean to each other in that moment.
Truly a heartwarming episode and a reminder to us all to take time to spend it with one another
They are couple goals♡

Kurtwood is almost 80, it is awesome to see him in the show, he´s thrilled like a kid.

@@shavonne4831 the only reason why I watch it 😅
The only actor replacable would have been Donna's
The cast for That 70s Show was just so perfect. Each actor worked perfectly.
you're selling them too short.
I knew who many of them were (like Ashton Kutcher) and found NONE OF THEM INTERESTING (like Ashton Kutcher)......but then I was on an airplane in 2006 watching tv and had few choices and gave this show a chance.
My flight felt like it was 10 minutes long. I wanted that flight to last forever! (NYC to AZ) Every plane and airport should play this show!
I even actively disliked Kurtwood Smith.......until I watched That 70s Show and I fell in love with ever shred of it. I was even stunned by the THEME SONG (cuz i was a fan of both Big Star and Cheap Trick!)........and that show is FLAWLESS.
Ashton Kutcher, for example, was FLAWLESS as the horny imbecile. WOW.
The 360degree scenes of them smoking grass was one of the most shocking and revolutionary things done in the history of NETWORK TV!
FREAKING MASTERPIECE.

The nostalgia is unreal 25 years since the original pilot wow
These two must be taking real good care of themselves. They have barely aged a day.
@@tyharris9994 no, the definitely look a lot older. I am watching it on TV, its very obvious
Omg ...25? Yeah wow It's almost hard to process. What is happening to time. 😩
Seems like just yesterday that my dad was telling me "did you hear they're making a sitcom taking place in the 70's?". The show started in 1998. It has been 25 years. That's like the in 1998 and going back to 1973.
@@tyharris9994 kurtwood is 79. I am 23 and look 40

That strange feeling of being born in 1981 and being nostalgic for a 90s/2000s show set in the 70s
My favorite Red Forman line - Eric accidentally runs over Donna's cat and can't bring himself to tell her. Red tries to convince him of the contrary, "You just go up to her and say hey, I'm a cat killer" before falling into a fit of laughter. To this day, I don't know if that was a blooper they kept in, or if it was Kurtwood Smith's comedic genius because I was in pieces when I saw that scene. it's my favorite of his.
My favorite of Red's lines "You're never too old to burn to death in a fire!!!"
Red to hungover headachy Eric..."That's your brain trying to comprehend its own stupidity"...I'm laughing as I type...
"And if a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his ass when he hops" ... I use this one on my own kids all the time
@@voodoocustompickups2547 I was waiting for someone to bring up this line! I use it all the time too!
Any Red quote involving a foot entering an ass is my favorite. One of the classics being, “your ass has a vacancy sign and my foot’s looking for a room!”
The fact that they could pass for an old married couple even just talking in an interview like this. They're truly irreplaceable

Both of mine were the hardasses. They never let me want for anything but they both were rough around the edges. I miss them both.
Middle class? I always thought they were working class since they were always struggling for money and neither were higher educated. I think to be middle class you have to earn a certain amount more than the average income household. I could be wrong though!! I love them regardless!!!
@@giorgia.m yeah, I would say "lower middle class" as they were not in poverty but struggled at times.

It's amazing how well they slipped back into character for the 90s after all these years. I feel bad for the new cast because everyone from the original had such good, easy chemistry that it makes the new kids look really bad in comparison.
I really appreciated how all the characters were able to so easily go back to their roles. Some of the kids do get better as the season goes on, so that’s nice

I like how when Debra Jo was talking about Betty White, Kurtwood was only half paying attention until Debra Jo said "she was so mean to me" which was strange enough to hear that Kurtwood immediately was confused and in disbelief until he worked out Debra Jo meant Betty White's character was mean to Debra Jo as Kitty
I saw that too. He was thinking " You do not speak ill of the queen"
I just commented the same thing above......
I don’t think he was half paying attention - I thought the same thing he did. She phrased it oddly - it sounded like she meant Betty white.
If he wasn't paying attention it's because he went into husband mode, paying half attention to the wife, the other half to what game is on tonight ?
Kitty Forman is my all time favorite TV mom. And what the heck is up with Debra Jo Rupp not aging a single day in all these years? I loved the original so much that I'm almost afraid to watch the 90's. But I definitely will.
She aged, but they made her look older on that 70s show.

The way he looked concerned when she said Betty white was mean to her 🫶
Debra had done a lot of comedy. She was great on Seinfeld as jerries agent. But Kurtwood was a big time sci fi guy. Usually playing the heavy. So many know him from Robocop, but he played multiple characters in a bunch of the Star trek series.. I can't think of him doing comedy before this.. and in one season he became a legend. And how on Earth can you not just adore Kitty..
I remember Kurt wood playing the choreographer from A Chorus Line. I think his real voice is a lot softer than Red's.
its so stramge to me that people box in actors like that..like into roles
Oh my she is hilarious. She doesn't even break character in a little promo bit. I wish I had watched that show when it was on. My youngest loved it.
An instant classic. They were so good together. I didn't know Kurtwood Smith did stand up comedy, and did not know about his insecurity of being on camera making people laugh at first. But he NAILED IT! I think he was, if not the funniest one on the show. I too was terrified of him at first seeing his evil character in RoboCop (1987), and he made me cry at the end in Dead Poets Society (1989). But this role was pure genius!
The ping-pong analogy by Kirkwood was and is actually true with most actors. And I believe he's correct. And Debra Joe's response was great. I'm so glad I have the whole series on DVD, so I can watch it at my leisure now. Especially when I need a laugh

I love Kurtwood Smith's acting style, I hope to see more characters from him in the future.
Clarence Boddicker sure did mellow out as a senior citizen.
They have perfect comedic chemistry, even when they're just naturally speaking.
i love their chemistry so much theyre like a old married couple in a good way
Red & Kitty Foreman had the best on screen chemistry, I watch that 70s show whenever I need a good belly laugh.
Kitty's scene @ 4:57 is by far one of the best scenes she delivered!
I am in love with Debra for referencing Robocop!!!!!
tv’s greatest parents. i adore them both so much. ❤️
I have them up there with Gomez/Morticia, and Uncle Phil/Aunt Viv as my favorites
I just want to say thanks. That 70s show got me through some really tough times in my life.
5:23 had me in tears seeing it for first time while watching the show
They gotta do an episode where Red rents a copy of Robocop from Blockbuster
No one must ever know……
I have such love for both of these incredible actors. They brought a lot of joy to my late teens and early 20s while I struggled to make sense of life. They both captured the characters with such grace and ease and completely disappeared into them. Kurtwood and Debra Jo: thank you for all that you do. Your work has made a very positive impact and I cannot imagine anyone else bringing these characters to us.
When I first started taking psychedelics any time that I'd have a scary experience I'd just turn on That 70's show to create a sense of comfort, and calmness. I'll always remember being in like 4th grade and watching it at my Moms parents house in Alabama too. Life is beautiful, and I'm grateful for good art :)
Debra's laugh used to make me laugh every time.. "Ha... ha.. ha"
married with children was groundbreaking..then THIS came along..BRAVO..
I just finished that 90s show and I’m really looking forward to another season. Took a couple episodes for the kids to warm up, but I really liked the direction of everything, and the old cast was great too
They always gotta add something gay which turned me off to the show.. Really enjoyed the first episode of 90s show. literally warrior nun, key house, Velma (HBO), sense 8, Mind hunter and many more. They add it in for no reason and it throws of the story.
@@kendog508 I understand Velma and sense8 cause it does seem like they just picked every type of lgbt character and then put them in the show. I still really liked sense8 and thought they did a good job representing the characters and their unique struggles regardless but for that 90s show, there’s literally one gay character and it’s also a sign of the times, right? It’s the 90s, things are changing and it’s becoming more socially acceptable for someone to be gay. I do think it adds to the story and idk about you but I have a lot of gay friends in my life so it’s not unrealistic for them to have a gay friend in their friend group, nor does there have to be a reason for a character to be gay just like there doesn’t have to be a reason for a character to be straight.
@@kendog508 are you aware gay people exist in real life
@@kendog508 dude did you ever watch that 70s show? Fez was the most gay character ever. And the episode with Joseph Gordon-Leveit where he was openly gay. Seems like you might just have your own issues with gay people that you need to get over.
@@kobybarnes3035 except fez is not gay in any way shape or form
My favorite scene with these 2 was when they saw bob without his toupee 😂😂 kitty trying not to laugh was epic
This is incredible looking at Debra Jo and Kurtwood Smith so many years after the show, having not missed a single episode, outtake, or blooper. The whole crew from tryouts to finale were perfectly selected, oriented, and navigated through the whole show. There was not one episode which ever left me feeling like "Ah, I think I just wasted a bunch of time with that one." Because it wasn't dealing in super dramatic and stupidly altering scenes, it was just normal 70's Wisconsin teenagers and parents doing normal stuff.
“Oh Arthur stop it. Stop it. Hahaha stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it. Hahaha stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it hahaha. Stop it.
“Vision help him”
Best comedy parents duo. Idc if I haven’t watched every family sitcom ever. Idc and I don’t wanna know. Even if I did, this would still be true.
Best comedy duo as parents. Kitties laugh is a cult icon
Reds passion for being a figure of fury is impeccable and their compatability and soft spot for eachother is just an electric match of tv chemistry.
Like… they way they fostered all the kids on the show that aren’t even of their own blood in the show by giving them all the exact same love, care and discipline they do Eric and Laurie has just cemented their spot as tvs best duo for me.. the whole cast undeniably had family type energy and the directors and producers couldn’t have paired better actors together on a show
debra jo ripp is correct the OG title of the show wasn't that 70s show that was just what the audience called it so it stuck
yeah I think the original title was "Teenage Wasteland" or something like that
@@JJsNightmare yes i think that's what it is i think what debra thought the name she said was the british that 70s show that happened for like 10 eps i saw those eps it wasn't bad
They were like my second parents growing up, I'm so glad they're still with us and in the spotlight again with the new show
Seeing these two legends together again, is truely wonderful.
