    This is the type of teaching that I would like to see more of in yoga: present students with an open-ended challenge (like getting off of the floor without using one’s hands/arms), then have students use their body awareness to explore multiple ways of meeting that challenge. While this may be considered an unconventional yoga video, it’s a favorite of mine. It shifts the emphasis from carrying out poses to doing something much more dynamic.

      it is challenging for sure! in part because we don't always think to practice it or integrate this skill into our daily movement choices. i love your attitude, though. so many people come across this and decide, often without trying or after a single try, that they just can't do it. i love that you're approaching this skill from a place of curiosity and determination. keep up the good work and the practice. keep me posted on your progress. cheering you on, cathy!

    I really appreciate you took the time to address what I think some people view as trivial and obvious stuff (how to stand up). This helped me understand the progress I need to take to get to the point of standing up hands-free from Indian-style. I've been working really hard for a couple of years to become strong and muscular; but now my focus needs to shift more on awareness of what and how to utilize that strength with effective and efficient body movements. I'm going to be so proud of myself once I've mastered this action. THANK YOU!

My previous test result for 1st phase, the crossed leg part is not good. Same goes with at the end of 1st phase. When i try your tips, especially standing up with ankle crossing leg, i can finally lift up my body without using my hand. The crossed leg part is really hard but i managed to do it, with big momentum. Thanks for the keyword given, lift with ankle and trying to reach something or someone's hand. When I was a teenager in high school, I've also struggled standing up without touching the floor. Back in 2015, a friend of mine has experienced standing up without using her hands. So at the end of that year, what I did was go home and practice every single day during the holiday vacation. I practiced and practiced until one day right after new year's it was January 2016 AKA 6 years ago I can finally stand up without using my hands. Once I surprised that friend mine she said ''Zainab you did it! You just got up without touching the floor!'' So thanks for that video I really appreciate it.

Found your demonstration. I found I could kind of do the second example from one side, and the third example I was able to do after trying it a number of times. Albeit it is with much arm flailing, weight shifting and awkwardness but now I have faith I will reach my goal this year! With much gratitude. Will be sharing with a friend.

    Glad your video popped up in my quest a week ago on how to stand without using hands. Remembered that I could do it with ease several decades ago but somehow forgotten how now that I'm in my 60s😄 You make the movements so much more clear because you talk them through so thank you more than much. I can now stand from sitting cross-legged or with knees on the floor fairly smoothly but not yet from the first position you described (which I took to be the easiest because you showed it first). This is great for people who have no damage to their muscles. I do regular exercise, Zumba, yoga and strength training, and I was not able to achieve the first movement, as it relies on your quadriceps and knees, and if you have damage there, not sure how you accomplish it. But thank you for attempting to help people who have difficulty getting up.

      Yes, these are all best for people who have no injuries. And I'd offer that people who have injuries or weakness in their hips, ankles, knees, and thighs, might need to work on those areas first. I actually created a whole separate video for that since this quick video was simply to address the ways a person can work on standing up from the ground -- not on the strength work and mobility required to get there if they can't do it yet. If you're curious, you can find that video here: ua-cam.com/video/lgmuAgexkvk/v-deo.html

      thanks for giving this a try, deborah! and when you're just starting out, it is tricky to get off of the floor without using your hands.
      so some of the ways you can do this would be to start by using your hands, then maybe use just one hand. or one hand very lightly while the other is still supporting you.
      in this way, you slowly decrease support while continuing to practice the skills.
      you could also prop yourself up slightly, with blankets or blocks under your hips to give you a boost. then slowly decrease the height of the props.
      lastly, i have a few more videos that include other ways to practice lifting from the floor without hands.
      this is one of them: ua-cam.com/video/zbh8LokPg-U/v-deo.html
      and here's another that works on ankle/hip mobility skills, too: ua-cam.com/video/lgmuAgexkvk/v-deo.html
      Good luck!

    If you do the deep squat method, it's easier to do with the feed a lot further apart. 😉 It's a really fast way and I found out i do enjoy to easily sit down on the flor like that. 🥰😊

    • @NaomiGottliebMiller
      @NaomiGottliebMiller  2 роки тому +1

      thanks for the feedback, Elea. different methods work for different people and different bodies. i tried showing a few different options here so that people could try out different ways that work for them. i actually think the deep squat is trickiest for most people, especially people of european descent, who have not historically squatted, so we tend to have tighter hips and and loose knees (vs mobile hips and tighter knees, which make deep squats easier). I'm glad you found something that works really well for you!

    • @NaomiGottliebMiller
      @NaomiGottliebMiller  Рік тому +1

      it is really tricky. i am a movement professional. that's part of how i do it effortlessly. and i practice it pretty frequently. my "desk" in on the floor, so i sit on the ground daily and usually get up from the ground without my hands multiple times a day.
      but also, i have decent hip/knee/ankle mobility, plus solid leg strength. these also help me do the cross legged version with relative ease.

    Really well explained and great to see the moves made as slowly as possible and the sames moves repeated again. Sadly I feel I haven`t a hope of ever doing this. I just can`t lift my bum off the floor. You make it look so easy but it really isn`t when you can`t do it. Possibly my legs are too weak but I don`t know how to strengthen them. I am 75 years old and in quite good health, I do stretching exercises every day and I am quite flexible but can`t do this.

    • @NaomiGottliebMiller
      @NaomiGottliebMiller  3 роки тому +1

      Kathleen, you absolutely can do this. My suggestion is simply to start a bit higher up. Pillow or block under your hips or knees to give a boost. Alternatively, you can use one hand instead of both. Think small steps, not huge ones!
      Also, strength is a part of this as much as mobility. Your adductors (inner thigh muscles) and glutes play a role in getting off the ground as well. Here's a practice from my channel that focuses on leg strength: ua-cam.com/video/4qWnBrUr26Y/v-deo.html
      Also chair pose and warrior 3 in yoga are great for building leg strength!
      I hope this helps.

    It looked pretty easy, but I could not do them at all, and to think I am Aerobics Instructor, teaching for the last 27 years. Somewhere along the way. I had felt difficulty in getting up without using my hands. I wanted to learn some tricks to practice by which I can get back to getting up from the ground without using my hands and came here, thought it looked easy to follow but I failed.Though I don't have any knee pain or any such pain in any part of my body, and I am pretty flexible, but somehow I have lost touch with the art of getting up quickly from the ground. Good video, and you do it so effortlessly

    • @NaomiGottliebMiller
      @NaomiGottliebMiller  2 роки тому

      You can be really skilled in some ways (teaching aerobics) and still have areas that are less strong (getting up from the ground).
      Mostly this requires a little practice and consistency plus some hip/knee/ankle mobility.
      I have a new video on my channel that helps with the second part: ua-cam.com/video/lgmuAgexkvk/v-deo.html
      And for what it's worth, if I tried aerobics, I'd probably struggle a bit at first because it's not currently one of my movement practices!
      Good to diversify and challenge our bodies in different ways :)
