Teenager of the Year is the best album ever! I must have listened to it a zillion times and always as loud as my tinnitus ridden ears can stand. The genius that is Frank Black.
This is incredible. Frank is a genius. I can't beleive that I have lived 36 years and I just discovered the Pixies and Frank Black a year ago. I was lucky enough to see Black Francis when I was in Hollywood last month. Go get yourself Bluefinger.
I love that album. Bought it long ago on a whim not knowing anything...not one song, not who the guy was...not realizing it was the guy from Pixies. By the time I got through Calistan I realized I had found something indeed special. It comes back into rotation every few revolutions. Always will.
You could give this man a kay guitar with two strings, stuff an old sock in his mouth and say sing me a new song now. And he would, cos he could and it would be better than most music available today. Truly godlike.
This has always been one of my favorite songs, and now after 12 or so years I finally learn that it was written about El Camino, a street I grew up 30 seconds away from. Amazing!
i agree best album, Headache, Abstract Plain, White Noise Maker, Freedom Rock, Speedy Marie, Vanshing Spies, so many great songs Mullholland. these could have each been a top 40 hit. I think this was his best album, Cult of Ray and the self titled were good but this album is a masterpiece, each song sounds so well crafted but not overthought, just enough keyboard or angular lead guitar to make each song a bit more interesting but still not bloated or overdone. Sometimes this cd will stay in the car cd player for a couple months straight.
How cool to have him give some background to his songs because sometimes just listening you may have a completely different interpretation,, at least in my limited mental capacity Frank you kick a**
These two videos are amzing.... This and 'I will run after you'..... they soud great.... a light touch of reverb made this come together.... Bravo everyone involved..... Big Frank, Buxton and the guy who posted this.... i'll be watching these again!
Besides being one of my musical heroes, Frank's so entertaining and funny. During concerts he don't talks much, though. IT's all about the music, and not some image you have to show the world. See you this sommer Frank..
Or the glass is half full because a 30 year old song by a non-mainstream artist is available for consideration in a new format and we're alive to hear it, see it, and share it...
Inspiration ..Is the key . interpretation..is a method .. to the thinker....unfortunatley a dying art ...in these modern times.. thinking cannot compete .. with the g- string mentality . Aristotle..Plato..Socrates...FranK Black.. Need I say more ?
I could be wrong but here's how I always saw it... Calistan's the name of a country now, like a bantustan or one of the other 'stans. Where stood 16 lane freeways, in what used to be New Spain. Something crazy caused LA to melt into a valley of tar. The people who still live here are reduced to scavenging bottles & cans on the beaches. There's a lot of dust in the air, it makes you wheezy. And since the apocalypse, SoCal has fallen under the protection of Japan.
Yes ,,it is refreshing to hear a writer take off on something interesting, rather than the same old tired subjects of , love. (blah ) lost love (blah ) and green tractors ...
Spoken just like Ray. I think Frank's being intentionally coy with the comments. The coolest thing about this and a few of his other songs is that they seem to take place in the same future. Esp. stuff on "Teenager..." where post-apocalyptic LA sits next to the Islands of Phoenix, and Big Red is getting the bee treatment. Be interesting to know if "I've Seen Your Picture" off Dog in the Sand is supposed to be in the same timeline...
Did you seriously shoot this Adam!? I remember hearing this version and Charles' explanation back around that time before Adam Buxton was a thing in my world.
@@ado75 It's a great song on the best album of the 90's. But Headache? Makes me think you bought it for the single? Now if you'd have combined w/Fazer Eyes, I couldn't agree more!!!
yippy-iye-aye! ...frank's a fan of kim stanley robinson..he recommended kim's mars trilogy books on an interview on much music way back when...ksr also wrote the three californias trilogy about a future california...

+pooh poo I quite agree, I have a 1969 Kay electric I paid 10 dollars for the strings cost more than the guitar :)
there should be cd commentary like this, like the dvd commentary
I want a version of this where he explains EVERY LINE! Amazing lyrics
Grand fan français de franck continue mon gros on se voit au prochain concert
I love the way Frank guides us through this song...what an artist, what a legend.
Man I LOVE the whole album. 22 songs, at that!
The man shits genius
Charles is beyond awesome
The members that formed the pixies all never cease to amaze me even though it's been close to 20 years. wow ! I'm old...
He is my inspiration. I love him to death.
this is such an amazing song. teenager of the year is one of my all time faves anyway.
It's a Sad Old World we live in when this was filmed 6 years ago and the actual album was released 30 years before that.
This has always been one of my favorite songs, and now after 12 or so years I finally learn that it was written about El Camino, a street I grew up 30 seconds away from. Amazing!
this.... this legend.... he gets around by walking? he needs a cloud to sit on.

he's great!
What a song writer
How cool to have him give some background to his songs

Frank you kick a**
Exactly, i thought rhe opening line was a dig at the infamous traffic in Southern California, rather than a reference to the length of ECR

Maestro!!!!
killer version of this song... love the guitar and the vocals with explanations. I've always wonder how many people not from Calistan understood that.
