    I 3d printed 4" ball valves, a "Y" valve and segmented flexible ducting for my workshop dust extraction system. I think the valves are pretty much jam proof unlike what dust can do to some gate valves. But that system is overkill for clearing fumes from the laser. I want to take a similar approach to what you are doing for my laser engraver and for soldering also. So your video is good "food for thought". Thanks for sharing. Your comment about shoddy woodstove installation struck a chord. We had a wood stove installed by a professional fireplace store with their own installers. The stove pipe coming out of the house looked like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. They got to do the job twice and I had to teach them how to do it correctly.

      it's hard. I don't mind 'paying' for quality work, but then you end up babysitting the whole time anyway to ensure the quality

    I’ve found that even when you hire “professionals”, that’s the kind of work you get. I worry that doing DIY that I may not be doing some the best, but my work is generally as good or better than almost anyone that I’ve hired. As with most things, high quality work is based on the individual, not their title or degree.

    Nice job. You nailed with doing a lot of the work yourself. You can't trust anyone else's work 100% so you may as well do it yourself and have total control over all aspects of the project.

    Make sure you add a grounding wire to the duct if you havent already... Fast moving air will make static electricity, and built up over some time and with some dusts can create a small fire. I'd rather you have it and not need it, than need it and not have it, and have an incident occur... What's $1 in wire lost for prevention versus $500,000 for your home and everything in it...

    i was thinking you could create a little caddy for the fan and a mount to go on the joist to make it easier to fit, the fan could then slide into the joist mount without needing to fight the screwing in at the odd location

    Very good stuff! Awesome printing and definitely better than having the pipe crushed and just taped..you could probably put those couplers in, then use the metalized duct tape to just tape over the joints too

    FYI if you printed the reducer coupling to be concentric from 4” down the air will flow with less restriction due to stratification. Also minimizing static electricity. Also use a grounding wire to earth ground.

    The xtool enclosure is pretty good. The lid setup works well. Easy to open, stays open, closes right, and can access and see what you need to. If you’re going “far” a secondary fan would be good. But it’s better than the zipper enclosures.

    Some of the wood and the glues they may have of them can be toxic when burned

    What CAD software do you use? I've been using Fusion 360, but have been looking for alternatives, like FreeCad.
    Just found your channel, loving the practical approach you use in your channel.

    Is there an approval on that fan? FM, CSA, cFMus, UL? I would hate to see that fan start a fire and your insurance is void.

    I have the same issue where I can't put any exhaust fan because It will going to disturb my neighbords and maybe I will have a problem. I have a small Co2 laser for DIY not for leaving the mahine working all day long. So by law, I need to put a filter between the machine and the exhaust fan If I want to use the machine. But it's funny that I have to swallow all the bbq smoke from any neighbord and I can't make a court report but they will make to me if I use the CO2 laser.. My house is attached to others so I don't have the option to leave the garage door open without getting in trouble. Unfortunally I bought the wrong filter machine because it looks like a toy instead beign almost bigger. Maybe I will use with any 3d printer and find another one for the CO2 Laser. Greetings from Spain.

    That metal flex pipe for a wood stove is a complete fire hazard. I know you didn't do it.. lol

      it was for the air intake, not combustion, but either way was poorly installed

    They really weakened those joists. Id look at them and how to strengthen them with so much removed. I too hate getting people in as they do a worse job than I.

    I've done similar but with filtration before fan. Otherwise, the impeller will get gummed up.

    I think this might work for the 3d printer exhaust I've been thinking about. I'm sick of working only during the "good parts" of the year when the temps are right in the garage. I think the toughest part will be the hole from the basement to the outside. I also wonder if that "one way air valve" will work when the outside air is a little windy. Thanks for the inspiration to at least give this a try.

      yeh, ABS and a lot of other filaments are just as dangerous as cutting stuff on the laser

    13:50 I'm glad you were able to get the motor over the 'studs' in the bracket. As a former career product designer, that was my very first thought when you said you were going to press those in !

      yeh, I really thought there would be more flex there on the inlet pipe. There was enough, but not as much as I thought
