My struggle is that I feel bad getting rid of books that were given to me as gifts. Even if I didn’t like it, I feel like I have to hang onto it because someone bought it for me.

    • @darbywilliams6406
      @darbywilliams6406 3 роки тому +29

My thought is always that the best part of a gift is simply that someone thought of you and wanted to give you something. The book isn’t doing anything for anyone when it just sits on my shelf. I know that if I gifted someone a book I would love for them to pass it on or donate it so others could enjoy it. Remember that the person thought of you and spread the joy to others :)

The thing is, no one gifts me books, there is NO library in the area I live, and I purchase only books I'm sure I would love to read because I'm broke. So I can't even dream of unhauling the books I own but sure do enjoy Merphy and other booktubers doing the unhaul and donating them. They will surely be useful to and liked by many others who can't afford to purchase them. Thank you!

    About Battle Royal:
To my memory you don't need to keep track of the characters. There is a central character, and a Final Boss, but otherwise pretty much works like a series of short stories.
    If this helps.
But it's definitely not just another Hunger Games.

I listened to Norse Mythology and loved it because Gaiman read it himself. I don't think I would like it nearly as much if I read it to myself. Same goes for Garrison Keillor and David Sedaris books. They both have such great delivery when they speak, but it just doesn't come across the same when I read them.
The worst thing about being a book lover is hanging on to books I loved and planned to reread and books I wanted to read a long time ago and never did. My taste in books has changed and I'm more critical about books now--at the age of 69, I'm realizing I will never get around to reading most of them. And that doesn't even include the 16 boxes of books I gave away. I unearthed my Mary Stewart King Arthur/Merlin trilogy to reread because I loved them so much 40+ years ago and was saddened to find the charm they once had for me had slipped away.

I’ve been catching up on your videos! Is that the same Battle Royale you meant to unhaul a year ago? :) I read Battle Royale twice, totally agree there are a lot of characters. It is really psychological and weird though. There are a few noteworthy characters: the main guy and the girl whom main guy’s friend liked (the friend died early in battle and main guy swears to protect her), the guy that won battle Royale previous year and transferred schools (he helps the main guy and girl throughout the book), the guy that can’t feel pain because of a previous accident, a girl that was physically and mentally abused when she was young (described as “angelic”), and the crazy teacher. That’s about it.

I know you probably don't need more books to read, but a fantastic comic run that is very out there Gothic horror is Alan Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing. Also a major inspiration for Neil Gaiman's Sandman

The Girl in the Mirror is WILD and one of the strangest things I've ever read, but the author didn't know how to pull off what she wrote so it just became the most ludicrous ending imaginable. Seriously, part one and part two are entirely different books. Honestly I recommend the experience of reading it, but gave the book two stars. It's enthralling trash

I audibly gasped at 20th Century Boys, then I remembered that I own the first volume of that and will probably never finish it.

i don't think i can change your mind about 20 century boys and honestly that's not what i want, i just want to tell what was my experience with this manga!! :) when i started it, i was reading it v slowly and was not too much into it but i desperately wanted to love it. and idk when but at some point i was obsessed and went from one volume to another so fast, there was a plot twist or more like a reveal after reveal after reveal, each one more shocking than the last. it's now one of my favourite manga of all time but tbh i understand why it's not for everyone

Honestly, I have only three books in my library which I ever want to get rid of, and that is only because it's very poorly written dystopian YA that was a gift.

I am mourning the abandonment of the manga 20th Century Boys. 😵
Yet I will still respect Merphy’s opinion. 😭

Your problem with 11/22/63 is the exact reason why I don‘t read King anymore. I‘ve read Misery, Shining, IT, Under the Dome and many more that I really did love, but in most of his books there‘s just so many pages of nothingness, endless descriptions and repetitions that nowadays I just don‘t feel motivated enough to pick him up anymore.

Merphy unhauling the Selection series feels like Andy letting go of Woody and his toys at the end of Toy Story 3

Can understand why you dropped 20th century boys. Dropped it twice myself. However, after completing it, I would definitely put it in my top 3 along with Pluto and monster.

The Battle Royale movie is amazing. Haven't read the book though so can't speak to that. Definitely check out the movie as it's an hour and 45 minutes so a lot less of a commitment than a book!

If you want a good YA series to read, I recommend the Edge Chronicles series. They are fantasy/steampunk themed, and the artwork is incredible.

My problem with unhauling is so many of the books I have held onto are now out of print.
