STARS (1991) is the best Simply Red album to listen to in full - it's the first time Hucknall wrote every song on an album, and it is by far their best, most mature material.
My first exposure was this song, they played the video on MTV in 1985 and then it took months before the actual album came out. Saw them several times on their first two tours, even hung out with them a few times
I subscribed because I am a Genesis fan, but I have always loved Simply Red, have got most of their albums. So glad you guys are getting into them as well, they have a huge catalog of great songs. They were huge in the UK in the 80’s.
Another great reaction to our homeboy Mick Hucknall. I lived just around the corner from Mick when he was growing up, and his father worked in Stockport as a Barber. Mick's band was initially called "Red" and when he went to do a gig someone replied to him about their name and said to him it's just "Simply Red" and it stuck. Mick has been a Manchester United fan all his life and is the reason for the name. He also had a red Ruby stone embedded into one of his teeth, and on a very drunken moment bought David Beckham's football boots when he played for United for about £25,000 !!!!! You have to check out some of his live songs from his concert at Old Trafford in 1986 (especially Holding Back the Years), he does them all (except for the new stuff). Stay safe from Stockport, Manchester UK.
The other comments here are missing some of their best stuff: - Something Got Me Started - The Right Thing (original version) - It's Only Love - A New Flame - For Your Babies - Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye - Jericho
For my babies is very underated. That song came on the radio as I passed my old house the day of my mams funeral so it means so much more and the lyrics just say it all about her too. Never heard it played again on the radio since that was years ago. Amazing band simply red but mick was easily the star of the show. You know an artist is super talented when his live performances are better than the studio ones.
I'm of 1971 and for us this was the "normal" entertaining music when we used to hear that everywhere. And we didn't know that this music would have became "classical" music! 👋👋
This song is as tight as money would be ;) Great album... I'm a metalhead but doesn't mean you can't apreciate good blues, r&b... and Mick Hucknell has that sweet voice to bring you in ... this band was incredible. If you will, listen to For Your Babies from the album Stars ... for me one of the best ballads in the history ...
I wanna recomend another great band that you will love from the 80s "Prefab Sprout" I think the leadsinger and songwriter is probably one of the best songwriters of history. Paddy McAloon. And the first album you should react to is "Steve McQueen" and start with the song "Goodbye Lucille" or "Bonny" Believe me everything they did was gold.
Hey! Good Reaction! The part you attribute to MJ, is the song "Soul Makossa" by the legend MANU DIBANGO. MJ firmed as only writer: Dibango sued him and Rihanna for the part "mama-say mama-sa mama-coo-sa".
Another great British soul singer is Jess Roden. He has a huge catalogue of work, solo, with his own band and the Butt's Band, also collabs with Steve Winwood, Grace Jones and many others. Try Round and Round in a Circle live, as a starter.
still remember hearing it first time on some small private radio station in munich and being blown away. in 1985 private radio was in infancy in germany. in the munich area a lot of small, startup like, stations had to share frequencies and one could hear money's too tight only on one station which had a 2 hour(?) daily window - all others followed only some weeks later.
From this album the next one should be Picture Book or Jericho. Their best album is A new flame and a song that will blow your mind from that album is "Enough" and "You've got it" Pff they have a lot of perfect albums so you better react to them more often because there are a lot of songs. Try jumping to the 90's with a song like "Remembering the first time" or "You make me believe" I know what you gonna like believe me 😉🎶
Finally you got there! I saw them live last year - Mick's voice sounds still young and fresh after all that time. If you want to dive in deeper, consider reacting to: "Come To my Aid" or "Jericho" from the same album, the whole "A New Flame" album, especially not so well-known songs like "Enough" (A banger!) and ... and ... and ... You literally can't pick anything wrong. May I make another wish: Would you mind upgrading to a better camera? I love watching your reactions, but the video quality / resolution is ... let's say improveable.

Yep, it's another Steely Dan rabbit hole. Once you start, you can't stop. They have a very distinct sound, yet their first 5 albums are so different. Take your pick. You can't really go wrong with any of them.
I'm a life long fan of Mick and Simply Red. Please, if you love this, do yourselves a favour and watch him do it live. There are loads of live videos of him on youtube, but my favourite one of this song is the Montreux Festival 1992. Very easy to find, check it out.

Unpopular opinion maybe: later on in the Simply Red canon, Mick's voice becomes harder to listen to, and it's a technical problem. For this album his voice was younger and flexible, but the effort required to maintain the tone (and a very common problem of listening too closely to himself, not trusting the output) he got sharper and sharper, to the extent that it sounds out of tune. Even here he goes sharp on "now what are we all to dooooooooooo". If you ever do Culture Club you'll hear the same thing happens to Boy George; whatever you initially respond to in his tone, ultimately the lack of a maintained technique proves unsustainable. Btw I'm not dissing Mick's musicality - his soul instincts are impeccable, he's in the pocket - but he doesn't look after his instrument well enough.

She is a bass player with an amazing musical ear. Let her focus on whatever she wants. She will eventually get to the voice and chords played by the band. Also the bass makes or brakes a song. That's the instrument we feel in our gut and what makes us dance. She already knows that Mick is a master vocalist hearing holding back the years over 100 times before this.

Who cares about a bass line? Bass is the least important feature of a song really, because it’s the least noticeable of all instruments.
Not to people with a musical ear, it isn't.
Without it, the track wouldn't be what it is.
Every instrument on this track is of equal importance.
