- Got to travel to LEGO's headquarters in Billund Denmark and was able to see first hand LEGO Icons 10327 Dune Ornithopter! Here's the model and what the designer Mike Psiaki had to say about it's development.

I love Mike's design philosophy and his insistence that Lego is a toy before anything else- even when it comes to the sets aimed at adults- and that the spirit of Lego is for sets to eventually be taken apart and turned into something else.
Noone will take apart set this expensive xD
@@Lordodragonss thats simply not true. Just look at rebrickable where people post alternate builds and mods for sets even more expensive

not only that but he mentioned how the ornithopter's main appeal is how it looks in motion. Without this functionality it would lose some appeal, but still would look great regardless
That's my problem with alternative brick vendors. Their sets are mostly model building without the "child view". LEGO sets, even the most expensive ones, mostly still have this little toy something that I need.
Mike showcasing the features of this passion project of his as he tries not to look too geeky is so adorable !! I'm sold thanks to him and can't wait to put my hands on the set now

It's great to see a man who is probably among the most accomplished in his field, still has the same energy and barely managed anxious giddiness my kid has when showing off a car or boat he made with his Duplo.

@@TiagoCatarino I had begun to refind my interest for Lego as an adult, but limited funds have made me very annoyed at the adult and collector focused prices, to a point where I was starting to give up on the brand.
The... Snobbishness some people display, combined with their marketing fed into the idea that it was no longer a kid's toy, meant for the guys who see the Lego movie dad as aspirational (due to all the specifically designed parts). Or at least, not for a kid whose parents aren't filthy rich.
Even though it is worth the investment; I have played with bricks that are now into their 50's, and are still working perfectly, so I thought "well, my old chest and the one my partner inherited will have to do for them".
Mike's joy made me go "maybe there'll be br some good sets again that I can actually afford".
His statement that he designed this to be taken apart and he specifically didn't want a stand, cause "it's a toy, it should be played with" has immediately won me over...
I will be digging up those chests soon to see which small sets are a good starting point for me and my oldest (turning 4 in a few months, but I trained him well!).
I really like this. He is himself, it is not a corporate branded video, just him showcasing it and describing the details of the model. Really shows the human side and element. Thanks for the video.

Honestly, I think this is one of the best jobs in the world to have, especially when you get to geek out in front of likeminded people.
The way he casually swings it around really attests the build quality. It's 55cm in length and an 80cm wingspan and he's just waving it around like a club. That's one sturdy model.

From the first look i must say it shows that Mike really really liked Dune and put a lot of effort into making this as best as he could ad not the cheapest it can be produced.
I really love to see how excited the designer is for this project. You can always tell when a product is developed with that level of passion. So cool!
God when he mentioned the Jedi star fighter and how it was from 2002… I am so old.

I would have been happy with just flapping wings OR folding wings. But both? Plus that sick retractable landing gear? I'm stunned.
If there's any downside to this reveal it's that there probably won't be any more DUNE sets. That minifig selection indicates that they knew this was their one chance to get them produced.
Man, that functionality is awesome. Really cool model!! I am not a diehard Dune fan, but I might have to pick this up just because of how well designed it is.

I agree - i have been super obsessed with dune lately.
The more I get into LEGO, the more I've come to appreciate Mike as a designer. I like his design principles and what he thinks LEGO is or should be. His general excitement for the sets he makes, as a movie nerd myself, I appreciate a lot.

The Ornithopter looks absolutely incredible. You know, as someone who prefers sets with display stands, I can respect his reasoning for not liking them and I'm really happy how the landing gears turned out because it effectively serves the same purpose.
More technic than in any current Technic model. Looks great!

Wow, this is incredible! Mike knocked it out of the park with this one. I'm guessing the price will be at least $200, since it's 1400 parts and a bunch of new special molds. Edit: apparently it's only $165. Mind = blown

Well the coolest thing about how that dude presents his product, is that he's playing it like a kid. He shakes it, he swings it like it was an axe, he actions the mechanisms. It won't break and he's confident in it, in his creation.
I don't even know the Dune universe, haven't seen the movie. This Lego creation is just as stunning as it's sturdy!

I know nothing about Dune but its a super cool looking and well designed set. Such a charming designer, his passion was clear to see, and him being unable to stop himself from playing with it was very cute.

Mike is just on another level! All Lego designers are amazing, but he just keeps coming up with unique functions.

I really love Mike Psiaki’s designs. From the Downtown Diner to the Porsche Targa, all of his builds have been a pleasure to build with creative parts usage and great building techniques. Can’t wait to see this one in real life.

Something I love about this model is that the functionality also makes it very friendly to small shelves, just inherently by design, so if you want to show someone the full scale you will HAVE to pick it up and ply with it!
Also, who needs a display stand when it has landing gear? That's literally what it's for!

I have not seen a lego set with this level of accuracy, intracicy, functionality, accuracy, and minifigure selection in so long. well worth the price and definitely going to pick this up. the fact that the landing gear and wings are automatically retractable is just plane impressive.
When he activated the wings and they all just went woooahh!! Like like little kids was amazing 😅

This is the LEGO set I never knew I needed. Very impressed with his interview and liked hearing his philosophy about display stands and how he wants LEGO sets that you play with and reshape.
I do wonder if it will be hard to put together for less experienced builders. But it will be worth the effort.
I gasped and hyped along with everyone in the room…this is amazing!!
Now that's what a set should be like! Serious functionality that will make buidling this a unique and fresh experience. I am sure this will sell well and I hope LEGO learns the lesson. People should also take note about what he says about functionality and playability, because he actually gets it right. Even as an adult, I absolutely appreciate the playfeatures, because of the complexity that goes into achieving them and seeing it in action is something impressive, regardless of how old or young you are.

I absolutely love it. And the minifigures make it worth the money. I agree with the designer on this. The functions are way more welcome than a display base.

i'm glad he acknowledged that some of us wanted the 80s ornithopter and the similarities between the new cockpit canopy piece and the old jedi starfighter canopy. i actually thought they were the same piece until he pointed it out

SO buying this when it comes out as a long-time fan of the book. Although I didn't care for some of the casting choices in the 2021 movie the design aesthetic was totally on point and the ornithopters were one of the best parts.

I was skeptical on this set at the piece count cause I assumed it needed to be bigger but this is amazing and Definitely a day one purchase for me. The functionality is beyond what I was even thinking for this set
okay, that was super amazing, and I've wanted this set for soooooo long ever since it was leaked to be coming out. REALLY can't wait for this one. I'm assuming with this demo that the official release will probably be sometime next year unless they wanna have it out by the time the sequel releases, i mean that'd be ideal.
Really appreciated his behind-the-scenes insight and thought processes going into it. Makes me wish these reflections were recorded for as many sets as possible :) Love that it has unabashed toy qualities :)
I've already seen the Ornitopther in another channel (he was actually one of the guys asking questions in your video) and I must say that thing is one of the best sets I've seen. It's probably more to do with the passion Mike put into it but it's still an awesome model, everything that Lego is to me - imaginative, full of functions and playable.
Okay... this kind of is a must buy for me. Not only I love the design of the Villeneuve ornithopter, but this thing is much better than any scale model of it due to functions... I think it just replaced the Concorde on my "to get" list. As much as I love Concorde, there are great scale models of it and the ornithopter should be so much more manageable to display due to folding wings.

Mike is already a legend. I am not an staunch Dune fan, I've watched it but that's it. But that model blew my mind. It is big, yet playable and robust. Maybe in terms of details it's a bit lacking but I prefer playability to looks. I'm definitely gonna be saving for this one.

Seeing this designer play with his model, and make all these motions as if it were dogfighting, took me right back to my childhood when I used to do the exact same thing with my 2005 Lego Jedi Starfighter. This set looks amazing, and the designer just radiates passion when presenting it!
