Why Is My Pool Pump So Hot?

From www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pag... this video talks about swimming pool pumps and how the moving parts (and current draw) can lead to heat generation over and above what would be considered normal for a pool pump. In fact sometimes pool pumps can even catch on fire from both electrical failures as well as friction / heat related failures from moving parts within the pump moving together. Also a no-flow situation can also cause abnormal friction levels to develop and this can also lead to pump failure or even pump fires!

Love your fantastic advice and thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a Pentair variable speed pump and have it running 24/7 at 2000 RPM (minimum speed needed for my fairly new heater to detect water flow and turn on). The pump feels hot to the touch...not too hot to hold your hand on, but hot. I clean the pump basket every day. I'm wondering, how hot is too hot and s it bad to run the pump that much? Thanks again.

Get a temperature gun and see how hot it really is. Amazon has them for like $25. Electric motors can get quite warm without issue. Smoking hot...no good

Hi Steve been with you from your very first vids don’t comment a lot anyways my pentair super Flo 342001 I think that’s the model anyways what I noticed when I changed my sand to Dr Dryden glass ( imo the media is head and shoulders better than any other media on the market it’s amazing and the lower speeds it cleans most optimal , my point when you talk about filter pressure everyone’s is different you already know this but when I went from sand to glass what a higher pressure it runs
