When I'm having trouble getting motivated, I set timers. If I want to sit and knit or whatever, I set a 15 minutes timer. When it goes off, I set another during which time I go do dishes, laundry or whatever I can fit into that 15 minutes. Even if I'm not done, I can quit(but I usually finish what I'm doing). I can get a lot done in 15 minutes!

I find sometimes my emotions play a huge part in my productivity! If I have something on my mind that’s bothering me or maybe I’m not feeling very well....those two things can really influence my activity level! So I try really hard to always break tasks down into small increments and as you say....I am more likely to accomplish what needs to be done. Then my mood improves and my day seems successful! Our thoughts are soooo powerful!

A few weeks ago my whole house felt completely out of control and the worse it got, the less I felt like cleaning. In the end I just had to. I took a whole day and I set a timer for 1 hour in each room (or group of rooms) . Whatever I didn't get done in the hour I left. I managed four hours over the course of the day, interspersed with other things like emails and laundry. I'd cleaned the kitchen, the bathrooms, the bedrooms and the living/dining room. I should have taken one more hour to finish off (I have a small home) but I'd had enough by then. I did feel much better though.

Hi, I love that you are digging into this more. I would love more info and tips. I’ve tried many different approaches. I feel like routines and habits are good, but when they are new if we don’t gradually build these muscles we fall back to what is comfortable right? I am trying to see where those pockets of time might be and usually I only see them after the fact. I have built the habit of procrastination and it means a brain dump is 3 pages. It can make adding 5 min of decluttering seem unattainable. Does that make sense? It’s kind of hard to know which projects or areas should have your full attention.

For me switching from one task to the other every 10 to 15 minutes works fantastic! Last Sunday I worked through a to do list with about ten bigger tasks (like decluttering in different areas, installing hooks to a wall, rearranging the shelves in our basement, offering stuff at an online market place...) and tackled every task for 10 min and then went on to the next. I did almost three cycles through my list and was highly productive. I first thought the permanent interruption would disturb my flow but now I love changing the task after 10 min and dive into the next one. And when I am back to a task I have already worker on, I even feel kind of happy and excited that I now may continue where I had to stop! In can feel like a fun game! 😃

My tip is No Zero Days method. It showed up on Reddit a few years ago--someone had written in saying they couldn't motivate themselves to do anything. A guy named Ryan responded with a 4 step process that blew up the Internet. Read Ryan's response--he writes a little about himself, then lays out the 4 rules of the No Zero Days method--you'll have to scroll down a bit--it starts with "Ouch." His technique is VERY worth the 5 minutes it will take you to read it--changed my life. (fair warning: he does use some salty language, but don't let that you distract you from his brilliant suggestions.)

I do a very abbreviated form on Getting Things Done.
    1) I write down anything that pops into my head immediately , I never try to remember anything because the brain is not for filing.
    2) I sort this list into four categories:
    (i) Errands/shopping list,
(ii)Things that I need to talk with someone about before I can do them.
    (iii) Someday/Someway..dreams.
(iv) For the rest of the list: if it can be done in three minutes or less I do it right away. For everything else I write down the first action step that needs to be done to get it started. This turns a vague to-do list into actionable activities. So much easier.
I love this technique, it has made me so much more relaxed.

I used to tell my kids when they took piano- start with the scales to warm up their fingers and hands. Then start with the newest hardest piece. Start with the hardest measure(s) of that piece. And try to unsnarl them. Work on that hard piece for 5-10 minutes. Then go to some that they are currently working on but that are coming along. Then finally play some music that they are accomplished at. And play for fun! That is exactly how I work my day and my to-do list. Hard stuff first. Just like you said, I might not get the whole project done but I work on the hard stuff first. Then switch to some things that are already coming along. Then a little fun. :)

You "hard stuff first" people are admirable for sure, but I'm a small-victory-snowball person; the hard stuff is too intimidating to start with. I have, however, created a separate "hard stuff list" and try to accomplish at least one of those items a week, with the goal of building momentum, motivation, and courage. Thanks for your inspiration.

Recently, I have been logging into youtube and postcasts, so in the meantime I can learn something new while I go through these tasks (and today I found this video!). But really getting started is hard for me, despite that I know that I can have them done within 25-30 minutes.

When I'm crazy busy in the summer I use an ipad for work rather than my laptop and don't have any other apps on there, no social media and no using Google, just work files and emails; this helps me to switch off from work too because I work from home a lot but if I'm not on the ipad, it's not work time. I also have a separate work phone, with no apps.

Great tips. Thinking of mood and energy, don't dismiss underlining health issues. A walk may be good but if someone is not ever getting over a hump, they may need a Dr visit. Labs, vitamins/supplements, good food, good sleep... Neurotransmitter deficiency are real; sleep disorders are real. Hormones get out of wack, etc. Be real with yourself.

For me it is most important to find balance between doing ang being. When I know that I have also time to rest, it is easier also do things. Last month I have focus on my goals and I found that I was trying to do too much. So my body tryed to say stop doing, but I was just doing and ignore my body. After doing it, I had so bad migraine that I had to rest, because I could not do anything. So it is important to find balance and not to be so hard on yourself.
Writing down yous to do - list helps a lot. And it helps to focus. I also minimize all distractions. Put my Phone a way.

I found that one of my struggles is that I’m just plain tired. I’ve learned that when my body is telling me that I need more sleep, to just give it what it needs. I may take an extra long nap, or sleep in longer in the morning. I used to lay there feeling guilty, that I should get up and get busy, or that I’m creating a bad habit of being lazy. But I’ve learned through experience that I get way more accomplished if I listen to my body first. When I’m well rested, I have the right mindset and the energy/motivation to tackle the tasks of the day. So my tip is to not feel guilty if you need to take a morning or afternoon of rest. Give yourself a break so that you can hit the ground running when your body and mind are sufficiently rested!

I find I get more done if home alone, I spend time drinking coffee and checking emails ( mostly deleting ones I don't need) and then wroking for at least a hour on stuff I need to do. If I'm off I try and plan a meal for later on. I spent alot of time on computer, but putting music on and doing housework helps. Some days I just need rest.

Asking your questions in the last few seconds means some people will have stopped watching already. I like to think how happy I will make the person whom would benefit from "it" getting done. I see the excitement of my happy dog wagging his tail as I put the leash on him to go for a walk when I just want to sit and relax after work. The walk gives ME the air I needed to clear my head and exercise we all could use. I feel the peck on the cheek as my husband leaves the dinner table after I've made a meal when I would have been happy with a simple bowl of cereal. I could go on, but you get the picture. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Man, that would mean my husband would cook for me?!!....Nah!!! Also, company will come the one time you don't do________(your pick!). And, that person whom would benefit, is me. HUGS!!

Thank you; this was perfect timing! I've been trying to bust through a wall of inertia due to winter blahs or something. A few days I forced myself to do something mindless, simple, and physical, like sweeping the kitchen floor. The results were rewarding and helped me feel better. I stayed up after everyone had gone to bed to do it, even though I'd had all day and couldn't seem to get anything done. That "change of scenery" with no distractions helped. I've also come to realize (at least according to my family ;-) that my schedule is really full again, so *anything* extra feels really hard. After a day on the couch with a bad head cold, I chose to take my family's advice and cut back. Despite the things I'm involved in being *good*, I need a short season of hyper-focus on a couple things (like minimizing before summer) that will enable me to be MUCH more productive and involved later. Your shortened To-Do List has also helped me redefine victory in my day and helps combat perfectionism. As always, you're a blessing; thanks again!

My hangup was categorizing --- what is my priority if I think everything is vitally important to get done yesterday? Currently, I like the 4 urgency/importance blocks. (For some reason Pres. Eisenhower comes to mind as the source). Everything in a brain dump can get only one category, is it:
    1. Urgent AND Important
    2. Urgent BUT Not Important
    3. Not Urgent BUT Important
    4. NEITHER Urgent Nor Important
I think in business one would delegate the 2's and not have the 4's done at all, but I still think all 4 categories need to be done. My system is a WIP.
Ex. if a room has too much stuff in it to where I cannot clean it and my allergies are in full force what am I to do first declutter or clean? While it makes sense to clean around the clutter to begin getting it clean, in my mind it really makes better sense (it only impacts me not anyone else in the home) to declutter first. Cleaning on an ongoing basis will be more complete and EASIER which means I am healthier and probably more energetic to keep up cleaning AND preventing more clutter creep.
Does that make sense to you?

If I have stuff I REALLY need to do, and i REALLY don't want to... I use the ad breaks. Even if it's a recorded show, pause at the ad break point, get up and do one thing, watch more tv. Usually though, I have a couple of days a week where I get lots of things done, and a couple of days a week where I don't do much of anything, and they don't bleed into each other that much. My problem is much more that there's lots of stuff I could do, or, want to do, but there really isn't any urgency for it, so it doesn't really get done. My productive days are working for my have to dos, but that's it.

The very simple morning routine with a couple of easy, repeating tasks makes me feel like I already accomplished something by 9 a.m. Then I feel good about myself and trick myself into doing more tasks. Once a week I tackled one dreaded task that I keep procrastinating. That way, the list of hated tasks keeps getting shorter.

Great tips! I use the reminder app in my phone and make sure I set the alarm for the one to three things I need to on each day (your tip from your other video - thank you!). I started going to the gym so I need to make sure my bag is ready. I have two reminders in my phone - one to take my bag and put my shoes in it and the other to make sure I clean out my bag of whatever clothes need to go in the laundry, etc. Instead of checking it off my list, I change the time to the next day I work out. Reminder goes off 15 minutes before I leave for work and the second one goes off after dinner. I also employ Mel Robbins 54321GO method. Something needs to get done but I don't want to do it - too bad, 54321GO do it. It actually works!

I read Hal Enrods book "the early" morning, and since then I always get up a hour earlier then I use too. Then I also realized that my phone will track my sleep pattern, and that I actually didn't need as much sleep as I even thought. So I usually get up at 5:00 am, brush my teeth, drink a glass of water. Then I exercise, or meditate, read, journal, and then make my bed and get ready. I realized that if I do that every day during the week it actually creates a whole extra day of the week. I don't always do it both days of the weekend but the days I do I get so much more done:) Then if I get tired during the day my reward is a power nap for 20 min. But I usually don't need it.

I make my bed first thing in the morning. That for me is a mind trick that indicates: the day has “officially” started it’s time to get things done. I also take mini breaks quite often throughout the day when I get up from my computer, maybe drink a glass of water or eat an apple but get back to work after 5-10 minutes otherwise you get out of the flow. Finally I keep an ongoing list on my phone with 2 subcategories( to buy and to do) anything that pops in my head I just brain dump it there. I also go through this list regularly to delete what’s not relevant anymore.

When I do dishes that doesn't take any brain power. This is my you tube time. I stand at the sink and move around my kitchen with you-tube playing. When I am doing a project that is going to take thought. Things don't have a home, furniture needs to be moved, I need to just get rid of stuff. I make a plan the night before. This is what I think of before I sleep- no stress just the mechanics of it. Don't think of individual things just about 1/2 of my things could go and I wouldn't miss them so my goal is to get rid of about a 1/4. This way you set yourself up to a goal that isn't stressful and you feel like you can acheive it. Life happens always so don't beat yourself up if life happens and you don't get to that task that day, but don't forget it either. That night bring your plan into the room and really look at it cement it in your head. Keep doing this until you can finish the project. Dream about what your space will become. Doing this you have made a postive thought shift to that space and an urgency to complete it. In your mind you need to complete it to move forward in your life. Your mind has already accepted that space as your future what ever so your body wants to follow. Also you have told yourself over and over 1/2 of this stuff has no value to me, but they might have value to someone eles. Why save them and clutter your space if someone eles can enjoy them. Make your space what you enjoy😊. I am a collector of all things and am at the beginning of a new mind shift. I have buildings full of stuff. I know how I got here but it is not just tossing to get out of this, it takes a mind shift. I collect to feel safe, I need to tell myself that I will be ok even if I let go all my resorces I might need to survive. I have always lived with very little money but I learned a lot of make do skills. So anyways it isn't just get rid of it all-- it is you will be ok if you let it go. The best thing that has happened to me to help make this shift is our community has opened a store. It is free, take what you need give what you don't. Every community should have one of these.

My best tip is "Do not consult your feelings when you have a task that must be done today." Don't even go to, "I don't care, I'm depressed. I don't want to." But do address those feelings at the end of the day. Suppressing your emotions altogether is quite detrimental.

I feel like I am the most unproductive person in the world, but occasionally one thing I will do is watch something on TV - used to be a Lifetime movie (haha). I tell myself that I have to get up at least every other commercial, pause the movie, and do something that needs to be done.
