Oh my, seeing Gage sneak around the corner in the back ground was so adorable and how you in your gentle spirit gave him permission to come join you was a bigger message than the decluttering !!! Warms my heart 🥰 Although the intended message was fabulous too 😁
I have read all the decluttering books, including The Minimalist Home, all very helpful. But, having you in front of me is so much more inspiring. Like talking about decluttering with a friend over coffee. 🥰 Thank you. ☺️
The question that stuck out was "Do I want to handle this again in the future?" It's so true, the things I struggle to let go of just linger and aggravate me silently. I need to work on this. Great video!
Omg he is so cute. I’m addicted to your videos. I’ve always felt stuck in my house full of “crap”. But it wasn’t until my husbands recent deployment leaving me with a 8 month old and 7 year old that I realized just how much stuff I was “managing”. I’m going through a huge declutter before he gets home so we can focus on time with him and him with us. I also realized this week that I haven’t truly enjoyed my kids since he’s been gone and it’s just me 24/7. And that utterly breaks my heart cause they’re freaking amazing human beings and I’m too mad about a messy house I can’t keep up with.
I am an empty nester and your videos when your kids peek in... I saw you gently put your hand on him when he got a little noisy. These examples of calm and allowing them to be involved are so beyond sweet and warm my heart. I had 5 children and I homeschooled in complete chaos. I wish you were around when I was in the midst of it. Thank you for your sweet example of showing us how to prioritize the absolutely most important things in our lives... the people!!
Thanks for the useful tips. Another question you can sometimes ask is "Do I have other items that can serve the same purpose as this one." This applies alot to kitchen items. For example, I was thinking about getting rid of this large bowl I never used but kept worrying that maybe one day I would need it to put a big salad in if I had guests over for dinner. But I saw that I have another slightly smaller bowl that could easily work fine if I needed it for a big salad. That made me feel more confident to let it go. This could also apply to clothes. Maybe you're keeping a fancy jacket you never wear "just in case" you need to go to a wedding or formal event. Have a look in your wardobe, maybe you have another jacket you wear more often that could work fine for a formal occasion, so you can let go of the other one without feeling worried.
I just have to say how much I love watching all of your videos! My husband makes fun of me because I usually don't follow anyone online in any regular kind of way - but I make sure to never miss one of your videos! He jokes that you are the only "celebrity" I really follow!
“Physical stuff, the value of it is so low when we actually compare it to the things in life that matter”. Thank you for this, you’re so right! Thank you for your videos, they’re really helpful 🙂
Yes, my little boys have their little boys now, now I can enjoy your little boy as he crawls over furniture, I miss that. Every week I've been taking a box to thrift store. Thanks for helping me declutter.
You speak to my soul Dawn. I’m so glad I found your channel. I’ve been decluttering my home for almost a year. Every time a box leaves this house the peacefulness in my home increases. It’s addicting! Thank you for your knowledge. PS I’m making your pumpkin bunt cake for dessert tomorrow night, wish me luck.
"If I give you $5 for it would you let it go?" Priceless Question!!! So simple!!!😱and will help me to get rid of a lot of things I hold on because I spent money on it and didn't use in about a year. Thanks a Lot!❤
"Do I want to handle this again?" That is the question that will be really helpful for me. Your statement, "Get tough on your stuff," is another thing I will keep in mind. This was very helpful, Dawn. You are an inspiring and motivating!
I love Gage being in the video and especially how you welcomed him in and didn’t stop your video so it would be “perfect”. I thought it was perfect that it was real life, as if I was over at your house visiting. Knick knacks are something that hangs me up. There are some that I got when my kids came to us, and some that are part of the theme decor of the room. One thing I notice, is you don’t kale Knick knacks or a lot of pictures around. I wish I was like that.
I have a closet full of childhood memorabilia that has been giving me anxiety for the past 10 years! I just don't know what to do with it. Deferred decisions!! I'm DONE with the stress and anxiety of it. I'm touching it all ONE more time and making the hard choices!
Earlier today I had a burst of decluttering energy and went from room to room, closet to bathroom, etc. I pulled out tons of random things. Then I got to the top dresser drawer in our sons room. It was filled with random things that had been stashed there when we first listed our house for sale and needed it clean for staging. There was a bag of fancy drawer pulls from a business I used to have (refinishing furniture, etc.). I had sold tons when I first made the decision to close my business. But, these were the ones that didn't sell. For 3 1/2 years they have been kicking around the house. Moved from one area to the next. Filling me with guilt that my business was no longer, that I had wasted money buying too many knobs, etc. I finally packed them up and then with the entire collection of items I purged today I took them straight to the local thrift store. Yes I will likely see them on display at this thrift store as it's my favourite one to shop, but I'm so happy that they are out of my house. The guilt has been released.
I needed to see this. I have commented before that I have been stuck in my basement decluttering. I have already went through my upstairs once and have remade several small passes through it again. It is a constant process and I don't think people realize that once you adopt this frame of mind, you are always looking at what else you can get rid of! I have a few corners left in my basement and they are just haunting me. I keep putting them off. It's mostly childhood items, old electronics, etc. I know I just need to keep at it and it will get done. Just alot of decision making. Not as easy as throwing out old dishes that have no meaning or clothing that hasn't been worn in ages. :/ Im confident that I will get there. Just wanted to say that anyone else who is stuck to, I feel ya!!!!!
I loved seeing your son come in and compete with the camera for your attention, or was he competing with you for the camera ‘s attention. Either way it was just adorable. Especially the little feet in the camera. You are so blessed to have such great kids.👍
You are helping me create a culture in my home of decluttering and simplicity. I am happily trading in the culture of overaccumulation and overabundance.
I’ve been holding on to a few cases because I keep thinking I’ll use them to display some sentimental items. When you asked the question about someone offering you money for them would you part with them, I immediately knew the answer. They will be leaving my house pronto! Thanks for the kick I needed!💙
The “what’s changing next year” actually helped me keep something! I was thinking of getting rid of snow pants but then I remembered that I’m going to be living up north next winter. I would have been kicking myself wo the reminder
Borrowing items has helped me save so much time and clutter! My first thought whenever I want to purchase something is asking "Can I borrow it from someone I know?" Great guide! xx
The question that has been a new concept for me is "What is going to change in the next year that is going to cause me to use it?" That has helped me donate lots of things.
So you mentioned asking about the year past... Have I used this in past year? In another video you talk about looking at where you are HEADED - so FUTURE year. I think this is SO CRITICAL for dealing with especially "sentimental" items. Yes this belonged to someone I love, and YES it has memories, but if I think about where I want to be in one year, will this be necessary? The memories will still be there - the stuff doesn't really affect that. This also helps you see how the ACCUMULATION happens! I am dealing with THREE HOUSEHOLDS of "STUFF" right now, after the death of both my mom and her sister. Your videos have TRULY SAVED ME. Thank you for what you do. The fact that these are faith based SPEAKS VOLUMES. Again, Thank You.
The questions that worked best for me right now is “Do I want to have to handle this item again?” Followed by “Could someone else use or love it more? And Is it living out the purpose it was created for? I really enjoyed listening to this video while I emptied out a box that has been sitting here for days wanting to be done with!!! I did the 30 day Minimalist Challenge in April 2021 minimizing random things; and 4 other members of my family joined in this month. So this month I chose to do my clothing. Wow by about the middle of the month I honestly embarrassed myself, and really felt bad when I pulled out 2 more totes from the garage! When I opened them I almost wanted to cry because there was just so much more stuff. And it is all clothes that were the next size down and all my favourite brands, and almost new. Some items are new... I kinda broke down by the 21st, and rested until today the 28th of May 2021. I so enjoy your videos. And I did day 22, and 23 while listening to you being my buddy and helping me do 15 minutes together. Thank you... sorry for rambling. Thank you so much, you are helping so much.
Have been decluttering my kitchen for the past three days (taking a lot of breaks). No sentimental items so the questions were fairly ‘easy’. Got rid of 2,5 moving boxes of unused stuff!!! 2,5! And I managed to create a command station. Been watching your channel while decluttering. Helped me a lot! Next up: bathroom & playroom.
I am glad I came cross your channel at first I was like mmm I don't think I can do that I failed with Marie kando method But now its sinking in. its like your my coach without being here I just have your video's playing and keeps me going. I only did my daughter's room, kitchen, bathroom and living room and play room and already see the difference. I have a lot things lined up on my porch and i am amazed how much stuff i have 😲😬 and now I feel less stress and more time with my kids and hopefully once my husband is home with the kids I can tackle more toys. thank you for all your videos I am watching as I clean and declutter my house
The sentiment behind a saying I used when dieting may be useful here.."Nothing tastes as good as thin feels" , how about:. All these decorations don't look as good CLEAR & CLEAN.
I think it's backwards that way, please hear me out : Food can taste great, and having (some) things can be great. We can eat and enjoy our food and still be thin; we can have things and still our home can be tidy and clean. But: we can't enjoy food as much as we could if we're stuffing our faces all the time, and worse if we do it on the go, being distracted etc. Likewise, we can't enjoy any of our things and keep our house tidy and clean if everything is buried under heaps and heaps of clutter. So like dieticians recommend: select what you want to enjoy and take time to actually enjoy it. The dose makes the poison.
I would ask myself, "Was it worth the calories?" Especially if it didn't taste all that great. It's like shopping...do I really need it? Or I just want it. No regrets. Reset. Tomorrow's another day.
Everything you say is just common sense and so true. Thank you for this and ALL your videos. Oh...you little boy is adorable! Sweetest most precious possessions we have...our loved ones! 👍🏻
I am currently working on cleaning out our "spare" bedroom aka the junk room/holiday decoration storing room. I have been able to collect a lot of stuff that I am giving to my sister who just got out of an abusive relationship. So amazing to be able to help her out! Thank you for helping me train my brain to think what we really need.
OMG - Gage is the most adorable. What a sweety-face. He looks super content, happy, comfortable - your little “why”. Thank you for the unexpected way your message came through - creating more time for the important things. Loved seeing his little sock feet on the periphery. I also love your point that someone else may find joy from YOUR donated items. It is a pleasure to watch your videos. Many thanks.
I love the incorporation of brain science into the message! I also appreciate that you always offer a good reality check and remind me of what's really important.
Hey Dawn ! I am 12 years old .. and I would call myself a minimalist... my mom thinks she is a minimalist.... but i dont think so . lol! What can i say to her to help her declutter more? Can you make a video for what to do with people who think they are minimalists ? P.S. She gave me permission to write this comment ! I love this video ! :)
I did this with my clothes in my closet. I took about 1/3 at a time, hung them on a clothing rack, covered all with a sheet and a week later uncovered and asked myself, if I saw this in a store, would I buy it. If the answer was no, out it went to my charity box. I donated more than 1/3 of the clothes in my closet that way!
The question that stood out for me-Do I want to handle this again? My husband and I are both in our fifties. I want to let anything go now that is not adding value to my life. He feels that if we have room to store it then there’s no need to decide if we should keep it. But I know we will most likely have to make decisions on all our possessions at some point (ie when we move or down size). Delaying decisions that could easily be made now means we will have more to make later. It can be very frustrating. I really liked this video. Thank you.
I'm now obsessed with this! If UA-cam had only been available 20 years ago this would have made my life so much easier. As my husband and I are looking to downside this method is making it so much easier. I have multiple areas to work on but have made amazing progress in such a short amount of time. You've given me permission to LET IT GO!
I've lived in my current home for about 4 years and it is in great need of major decluttering, but whenever I try and start, I end up completely overwhelmed and give up. I've been watching your videos for a while, and I just wanted to come on and say thank you as yesterday i spent 4hours decluttering our lounge, still a bit to go, but wow, what a difference its made to my mind, and I can't wait to get going on the rest of the house and turn this place into a proper home space! Thank you for your inspiration ❤ xx
I have moved more than 20 times in my life, and for each move I handled the same item and continued to pack it away and still never use it. I'm done with keeping things "just in case"! Thank you for this helpful video.
The other day I went to help someone who was having a yard sale.. Three of my grand nieces were there. A woman went by and commented that she liked the hoodie that the youngest of my grand nieces was wearing. The little girl took her hoodie off and asked the woman if she wanted it. The woman replied “No”. Then the little girl said, “Do you want my heart and the woman replied”No”. The little girl was holding some seashells and she asked the woman,”Do you want a seashell and the woman replied, “No”... That really made my day to hear that little girl wanting to give something to that woman..... My two other grand nieces of course are really special in a big way!
I haven't used or admired my pile of old jeans, in my sewing room in the last year, but I used the belt loops and jeans material to mend a few pair of jeans for a client last week. So I am very happy I kept them. Sorry, I am not decluttering my sewing materials.
Dawn! Can you do a video on baby toys? You mentioned that when your smallest was still a little baby you got rid of all the baby toys... and how that went for you. And how you made that decision. Also did that also include "educational toys" or "developmental" toys like shape sorters, wooden puzzles, ring stacker ... would greatly appreciate it for us with littles!
Thanks for decluttering with me. Great video. I am working in my office/homeschooling/craft room, trying to make it functional again...instead of a room to throw everything in.
Coming late to this video, but I've been binge watching your channel and you motivate me! The biggest question that hit me is, "If I haven't used the item in the past year, what is going to change to make me use this item in the next year?" I feel like I can get rid of a lot with that ammunition!
This is the FIRST time I've ever made progress in decluttering....love your personality and the simple approach...and love your giggles as you explain things....thank you!
Thankyou Dawn, I’ve just found your videos a few weeks ago and I’ve really implemented everything u say, I have been doing massive declutters and I’m feeling amazing, it probably helps that I’m 12 days away from having my 2nd child so I’m nesting too lol but I really want to Thankyou for making my life more peaceful
About once a month I have 30 people over for pizza night. Its great and when you talk about 16 mugs I smile to myself because all of my precious crokery gets used. I'm really pleased because it makes me happy to have the crocery and happy to have the people in our house.
The "Can it be replaced for $20 or less" was the game changer for me. I used to clean out but now I'm in full on purge mode. Admittedly, most of the "inventory" in our house is mine except the kitchen is more my husband's since he does the cooking. While I could live with one spatula (we all know we have one that is our favorite) and one wooden spoon (also my favorite), he wants to keep two spatulas and five of the eight wooden spoons we had (don't ask because no, I have no idea how we ended up with eight, nor how that many fit into that tiny drawer.. frankly, I'm thinking Hermoine's purse magic must be involved). It's fine because I'm not the only one who lives here and if he wants two spatulas and five spoons who am I to argue? =)
My mom has been moving a storage unit full of stuff with her every time they move. I just printed off all your free question sheets and we're going to start going through it today! I won't let her continue to burden herself any longer. Wish us luck :)
My dog breed coffee cup collection still makes me happy, even though I can’t drink out of them all, so I’d say they still serve their original purpose :)
This is SO helpful. Soooo glad UA-cam suggested your channel. I've watched a bunch of your videos. Very motivating! Now that my older one is back in school I'm going to get very serious!!
I started decluttering and wasn't sure if it was working. My husband asked the kids if we were keeping this and they said "nope it's just clutter"!!! Music to my ears♥️ Thanks for the motivation!!
I totally read this wrong because I was reading quickly. I thought it said "my husband asked if we were gonna be keeping the kids. " Like, he was afraid you were going to declutter your children. Hahaha
I needed this kick in my backside to finally finish dejunking my garage. I’ve been working on it little by little for 5 years😮 ! But more aggressively this past year. I’m tired of trying to enjoy some time outside with my kids and having my messing garage stealing my joy in the moment. Or trying to find something we need for a family outing. Well no more this video has given me that push I needed. Thank You👍😊
I hear you on this! My garage is a major pain point for me because it is more my husband's area and he is not if a minimalist mind at all. I have went though the things I can. Kids items, car items, home decor etc. But, it is still filled with his hobby items and alot of stuff we don't need. I have had to accept it will never look like I want it to but, for now I have to focus on the areas that I can change. I pray everyday he will come around start tossing things. That will be a great day!
This is amazing! Your videos have helped me a lot! Now I can vacuum my floors each morning without spending a lot of time moving my mess first ❤️ with a baby and four elder kids, that is a lifesaver ❤️ thank you so much for your inspiration.
Loving these tips! I have been purging my home all year due to an upcoming move & I knew I wasn't done and I'm rethinking a lot of the things I chose to keep! Bye stuff!
The question that helps me the most is thinking if someone else can use it. I live in West Africa, and I do keep a few things for backups because it's not easy to replace things. If there's something I'm really not using, I remind myself that someone else will use it. If I hang on to it, it has a chance of being ruined by dust and/ or bugs and not being good for anyone. There are always people in need. I had an example from this week. I've been doing some decluttering while we're on our break from school. There's a West African outfit I never wear, but I was a little reluctant to declutter. I have more of that type of thing than I need and wear. Someone had a friend go into the hospital. The patient's social situation is complicated, and she is locked out the room she rents. She desperately needs some clothes to wear while she's in the hospital. Now it's an easy decision!
Very informative. My #1 question is how to get motivated and actually start especially after parents clean out, packng my own place and moving across country twice, i had no help...so im not to motivated to do it all over again (planning on garage sale....soon!) Thank you.
Thanks! I took my laptop into the kitchen and played this video while I cleared my draining board! What? Dishes? You ask! No! My draining board had become so full of stuff I couldn't use it any more! Pretty much my house really. So, I played your video whilst going through all the stuff and, though I couldn't hear you, I am profoundly deaf, I knew you were there encouraging me. I knew when my 15 minutes was up and now I have 2 bags of rubbish, some things to go into the utility room and a clear draining board! I never thought I would be excited about a draining board! I just need to give it a good clean later after I have had a celebratory cup of tea and promise myself I won't let it get like that again. Tomorrow? Well, there is still a lot to do in the kitchen so I will choose another spot. I will never be minimalist but I'd like to be more organised. Thanks again.
Hi Dawn! Thanks for a great video! So clear and helpful and also so sweet to see your little guy hanging around. A little while ago, I had commented that I was unsure of what to do with some paintings that had been done by people we know. Well..I finally decided to get rid of them! However they only made it to the get rid of pile and then I stalled. My husband commented that we should get rid of them so our children don't have the same perplexing decision we had after the paintings have sat for years in storage. I asked him to take them to salvos (Australia's Salvation Army) because I didn't think that I could actually drop them off. We live very minimally but these were some of the last items that I wrestled with. Now that they are actually out of the house.... I don't miss them at all! In fact I am so relieved to have that decision done with and the space cleared out. Thanks again for your channel! ~Katie
I just found you and I’ve been on a Minimalist Mom binge! You have given me permission to let go of so many things I was holding on to for no good reason. Like the icecream maker that we haven’t used in over 5 years. Am I going to go to the store to buy ingredients for a small batch of icecream that really doesn’t taste that great in the end OR am I going to go the the store and... buy icecream? Yup, hence why we haven’t used it in over 5 years.
Thank you. The not handling it again issue is key for me. I keep coming across the same craft stuff that’s not my style anymore. I would love to know how your mom decluttered her craft supplies? It’s hard at the moment in UK as all charity shops and craft groups are closed and will be overwhelmed with stuff when they open in 4 weeks time. So I have just had to throw some stuff in the recycling.

Thank you for being the first person in ALL of UA-cam land whose decluttering tips actually work for me! 💕
One of the questions I ask myself is, will I be able to find it if I keep it. LoL.
Ha ha ha!!!!! Yeah.....
That's a really good one! If the magical day comes and I finally need this thing, will I even be able to find it? Maybe not... Good thought.
Lol that is so me
I do the same thing. "If I needed this, would I even remember that I had it?" Probably not!
Ditto kiddo! Great question! Lol
"Do I want to handle this again?"
Wow! I did t realize how often I defer on decisionmaking! Thank you for this video and the printout!

Yes I will likely see them on display at this thrift store as it's my favourite one to shop, but I'm so happy that they are out of my house. The guilt has been released.
I love that phrase, "the guilt has been released." I need to remember that!
Ha! Those little feet! How precious💜Such good reminder of why we declutter.
You are helping me create a culture in my home of decluttering and simplicity. I am happily trading in the culture of overaccumulation and overabundance.
That’s what I want. Peaceful home.
I’ve been holding on to a few cases because I keep thinking I’ll use them to display some sentimental items. When you asked the question about someone offering you money for them would you part with them, I immediately knew the answer. They will be leaving my house pronto! Thanks for the kick I needed!💙
This is awesome!!!!! ♥️
I love how your little boy peeked in and smiled at us!! He is adorable...
The “what’s changing next year” actually helped me keep something! I was thinking of getting rid of snow pants but then I remembered that I’m going to be living up north next winter. I would have been kicking myself wo the reminder
Borrowing items has helped me save so much time and clutter! My first thought whenever I want to purchase something is asking "Can I borrow it from someone I know?" Great guide! xx
Love your cute little photo-bomber at 9:08. Thanks for keeping it real and reminding us that stuff is never as precious as our time.
Thank you!!!! ♥️
The question that has been a new concept for me is "What is going to change in the next year that is going to cause me to use it?" That has helped me donate lots of things.
Thank you dawn! You’re right, all the STUFF around us is nothing compared to our families and our experiences
I loved Gage sneaking into the video, he is adorable.
The socks!!!! I'm in tears with the memories that brings back.
"Get tough, on your stuff!"
Love it!
The list of whys at 9:45 is awesome. I played it back multiple times.
My mom used to say this to me 😂
I think it's backwards that way, please hear me out :
Food can taste great, and having (some) things can be great.
Ugh...inventory! That puts it in a new light, so wise, thanks Dawn!
Favorite question: is it living out it’s purpose. Could someone be using it.
I second that!
Wow! I should get rid of those too small purses. Someone much younger would love them
Third! Yes!!! 13:01
Decluttering instead going to bed when i should because of work tomorrow ^-^ its just addicting.
Greetings from Czech Republic! You have the best minimal life style videos!!
I love the incorporation of brain science into the message! I also appreciate that you always offer a good reality check and remind me of what's really important.
As I’m continuing to go through this process, I rewatch your videos. You’re so encouraging and your message makes so much sense! Thanks ❤️

So glad to hear!! Thank you!!! ♥️😊
Wow! So proud of you sweetie!
You can lead by example. You could declutter your room and then she will hopefully see the joy it brings you and be inspired to do the same.
Your content is consistently enlightening and easy to implement. Thank you
I did this with my clothes in my closet. I took about 1/3 at a time, hung them on a clothing rack, covered all with a sheet and a week later uncovered and asked myself, if I saw this in a store, would I buy it. If the answer was no, out it went to my charity box. I donated more than 1/3 of the clothes in my closet that way!
Wanting a peaceful place is the statement that seals the deal for me! 🎆
You are so uplifting. Never stop
Thank you.
These things are easy to replace but the people in relationships aren’t. And is it living out its purpose. You’re so smart thank you
I'm now obsessed with this!
You go girl!!! Good luck and all the best with your journey
It's amazing the things we do "just in case"! ♥️
Thanks for the motivation to declutter.
All great questions! My favorite is “What is going to change in the next year...” Thank you!
I definitely want to hear about how you tackle sentimental items! Thank you! Your videos are so helpful.
Ah, the sentimental stuff.
Coming late to this video, but I've been binge watching your channel and you motivate me! The biggest question that hit me is, "If I haven't used the item in the past year, what is going to change to make me use this item in the next year?" I feel like I can get rid of a lot with that ammunition!
Your guest host is adorable!!! 💕
Thank u for all u do to help everyone in the family get rid of things we don't need or want anymore and by the way your hair looks great 😎
About once a month I have 30 people over for pizza night.
Wow. Great advice. I would welcome a fridge declutter tutorial.
"Does it bring me joy?" Is one that I often ask myself.
That's so awesome!!♥️
I totally read this wrong because I was reading quickly. I thought it said "my husband asked if we were gonna be keeping the kids. " Like, he was afraid you were going to declutter your children. Hahaha
Lol. So funny!
Thank You👍😊
Jennifer H atta girl!!
I have the same issue with my husband. He is just so busy, so I try to be understanding. Hugs to you!
Your videos are so impactful and have really helped me transform my living and work spaces into something more relaxing and efficient. Thank you!!!
Love your child at the 9:15-9:30! Mark!! Those are the real reason!!
Love watching your videos. You're helping to keep me motivated to get through the stuff. It was nice seeing Gage pop in.
Every single word you say makes so sense. It is really enjoyable to listen to you.
Organization IS like peeling an onion. The sentimental layer makes me weepy. Keep the videos coming. Good counsel indeed!
I just want to get rid of it all. You inspire me. Thank you and bless you and your family
~Katie
Love the question "Would I buy this again?" powerful question and helps us let go
I just found you and I’ve been on a Minimalist Mom binge!
Gage is ADORABLE!!!
