We are honoured. Thank you for featuring us! See you guys on the battlefield :)
This looks phenomenal!
Kudos to the team.
this TA 2 as far as im concerned, amazing job on all the qol features as well
Looks amazing, not my sort of game usually but I'll be giving this a go!
Thankyou!!!!!!!
Been looking for something to replace Sup Com: FA, looking forward to playing this.
"Its based off Total Annihilation"
SAY NO MORE.
More like Supreme commander tbh.
well it was the spiritual successor to ta. pretty sure the same guy made both.
@@Cenot4ph Nah, both Sup Com and BAR are based on TA.
@5hadowfax you misunderstand. This is based off Supreme commander. That is based of TA.
@@Cenot4ph BAR is based off TA, with added ingredients, found f.e. in games like Supreme Commander.
I love an RTS where the AI is aggressive and seems like it is really thinking.
With cheese you can beat multiple max ai at once, but we are talking advanced cheese multiple tries and favorable terrain.
i highly recommend winter gamings guid on this game.. eg if you make a group using ctr 1 factory's producing those units will auto add them to the group.. there are loads of qol feature like that in this game which ive never seen in any other rts
*Watches enemy cavalry charge head on into braced pikemen in Total War*
Same!
@@awakeandwatching953 That is such an awesome thing I never even realized I now must have in an RTS.
On the World War scenario in the game I thought I blocked off my flanks. Suddenly there were three Titans at my back removing my chances. The AI somehow managed to probe an unseen spot to surprise me.
Finally, this game gets a spotlight. Absolute banger of a game if you liked Total Annihilation or Supreme Commander.
I never played those two how do they compare to C&C and Starcrafr?
@@madmanozzy Total Annihilation or Supreme Commander have massive battles - more macro than micro
@@madmanozzy SupCom, TA and BAR are larger scale with more units on the field.
I couldn’t believe it when I found BAR. I’d been looking for a TA clone for 20 years and they knocked it out of the park
@@ritchski1 Also check out Zero-K ;-)
I love it when you think there's nothing out there that you want to play and then something like this pops up out of nowhere 👍
With the shitshow that has become of the AAA gaming industry, it's really good to see developer stories like this.
Indie games will always be a bastion of great deals and craftsmanship
I've been playing BAR for almost two months. It's seriously one of the best RTS games ever made. And it's totally free. I'm constantly jaw dropped that the Devs are this amazing!
another indie game you should check out if you havent already is starsector. the passion and commitment by the single person developer puts the AAA devs to absolute shame.
YES! Starsector is a great game with lots of mods being made for it. Highly recommend it.
dont forget about the huge Starsector community who make so many high quality mods, some of them rewriting the whole story.
Starsector is one of those games you need a good week to just sit down and play to really get into, not for everyone
Fr it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played and I think he would really enjoy it for the immersion alone
Yes Starsector is an amazing game!!
This game is basically the amalgamation of TA and all derivatives that came after. All the best parts of all the games they could put in and balance. It is the ultimate TA experience, including all evolutions of the concept. It's RTS perfection. And the battles are so fun to watch that I often just spectate 8v8's and enjoy the show. Devs, keep it up. If I were a millionaire I'd pay you all handsomely for just putting in the time.
Bar is a surprisingly robust game, 8v8 is honestly surprisingly stable, like seriously what rts game just lets you have 16 players going crazy with little issues, unless the players are specifically trying to spam units, as that will cause problems.
Can't forget the painstaking efforts of developers who created the Spring engine. BAR uses a heavily customized version, but BAR might not be a thing had Spring never come about. Fantastic work all around from many developers. The amount of units that can be active at one time and the server just functions is just insane.
I have played since the days of Dune 2. C&C, RA, SC, Warcraft, TA, Dark Reign, Earth 2140, KKND, Homeworld, Deserts of Kharak you name it, I've played it.
BAR has, by far, the greatest Command & Control system in any RTS I've ever played. The ability to write/draw on the map, easily split units across an area, area-capture/reclaim/load/unload just make life so easy and I can see so many of these new features becoming industry-standard over time.
Nice to see Earth 2140 and KKND get a mention. With that kind of endorsement I gotta check this game out!
This is Supreme Commander, looks and plays like SC but with new models in place. People have forgotten about that game, it had the same game mechanics. Build big titan ships/robots, artilerry that can shoot across the map and destroy entire bases.
SC was the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation by the same guy. Make no mistake, this game is far closer to TA, but they took a bunch of central features of SC like strategic zoom. This game also plays faster than SC.
@@nERVEcenter117 Correct, BAR is far more like TA.
@@nERVEcenter117 Yeah SC was super slow, but that had the perk of allowing me to go make a cuppa tea haha.
@@BeyondAllReason While you're here, could you answer a quick coupla questions for me please? I've been playing a few games of BAR and still not sure:
1) is it possible to change patrol routes on the fly after setting them, using drag & drop like on SC?
2) what effects do promotions have on units? Does it just increase accuracy? I noticed it doesn't seem to incur regeneration like on SC.
3) just curious as to your opinion on SC and FAF and all that? Do you rate it? I assume you must at least a little as it's very much a TA successor itself.
@@MrShadowfax42
1: Yes hold shift and drag the waypoints around
2: Some units get bonuses as they level they are very small bonuses though, it generally says on the unit card
3: Not for me to answer :)
Great to see a BAR review from you Mac. I am a big fan of Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander as well.
Finally Mac found it!!! 😂😂😂
Worth noting with the AI, there are also two PVE type modes in this - where you get attacked by waves of enemies and have to kill a boss at the end. Played it for quite some time and it is a fantastic game, and even more so that it is free at the moment, if it wasn't it would be well worth your money.
Yeayyy, finally you've covered it!!! Glad you like it!
I played this a few months ago in the hope of finding something like total annihilation, it was like a dream come true. They even had the same unit names a while back, seems they had to change that unfortunately. Hopefully this progresses into something more
I love that they added two different defense modes. Thats what we always love to to in these games, coop defending against as hard AI as possible.
Great review! This looks like a fun hidden gem
Do you live under a rock ?
@@pureplay7071 haha, yes, it seems like I do 😅
I still have the Total Annihilation box, CDs, jewel case, manual etc. that I bought 26 years ago, along with the Core Contingency expansion.
Hands down the best RTS out there!
Glad you covered this one, community efforts hey
Just a quick clarification, membership for multiplayer is free
Also, I really wouldn't mind cosmetic dlc in this game, I'd chuck a few quid at it every so often
The game is in alpha and they have plans to get it on steam
Cosmetic dlc, they have also implemented a system for different announcers, so eventually announcers packs will nlbe a thing, probably after the steam release
@@andrewgreeb916 Are you sure about that? They use a modified version of the spring engine (the engine license prohibits monetization afaik), and the only way they can generate money is donations.
@@KennyCmd It doesn't as long as the engine stays open source.
@@BeyondAllReason It is good to konw. Keep up the good work guys. BAR is one of my favorite RTS
I'm quite impressed with the control you have of your units. Being able to set patrolrm routes, area salvaging, queuing up a units orders while it's under construction.
Very nice game and I've only played 2 and a half matches.
Just FYI, when setting up a game, check the experimental tab in the game setup. Here you can enable a new faction they are working on as well as tweak how plasma shields work and all sorts. It pains me to say it but i've had more fun on this than on Supreme Commander FAF mod lately as it also runs much better at higher unit counts and late game.
FAF is amazing but they're hitting the limit of what they can do with it.
the coop in the game is very fun, either skirmish AI or the monster wave rush thing they have, it works really well and is rather fun to try and push the growths back and try and capture as much of the map as you can before they get too much to push against and you just have to hunker down and defend
TA invented pretty much all the useful ideas of a modern RTS. Patrol, Build-to, Guard, assist factory
Supreme Commander is also great, especially Forged Alliance. Chris Taylor is the GOAT.
Yeah it was great, too bad second one sucked...
@@RandyBobasek Yeah, tbh Forged Alliance was a better "sequel" than SC2 could ever hope to be. Nobody would ever play vanilla SupCom now after FA.
Thank you for this gem Mack.
I literally had no idea it existed and now i cant stop playing
fookin legend.
Thanks Mack for covering this game! I've been craving a great RTS but haven't had any luck browsing Steam or really any where else.
Guys this game is freaking awesome. I've been playing it for about a month now and WAB is spot on with his review. This is Supreme Commander 3 That we never got and its free. Another incredible opensource game to check out is 0 AD. Also another freaking awesome opensource RTS
I have been playing this for a couple of months and really enjoy it!!!
Thanks for this Mack !!! Rts games were what got me on PC back in the day C&C , Aoe , KKND
Total annihilation is my all time favorite game I can’t believe this exists I’m so happy thank you for showing us I’m gonna download and donate as soon as I get off work
So glad they made this and the fact that it's good. Total Annihilation is my favorite RTS of all time
Played the crap out of it love this one and zero-k
honestly i rather compare this more to supreme commander, it's awesome
Downloaded. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
How nostalgic. Just need to pop in the TA soundtrack and go to town.
Great to see BAR getting some love, been playing and following this for a few year and its great.
Thats why "Worth A Buy" is my favourite review channel. I'd never hear of this game otherwise.
Looks great! I love Total Annihilation too! Thanks for showing this off Mack!
Thanks for the heads up Mack.
TA was amazing, I'll have to check this out. Also, Kingdoms was a fun spin on the idea.
Not all is lost. Thank for the heads-up. It is always worth checking out a Total Annihilation vibe game. Another brilliant gem after the fantastic Regiments by Microprose.
Ima grab this asap, thx!
I played so much TA back in the day. Thanks for letting us know about this!
Same here. I also tried a lot of 3rd Party units. So I recognized most of the ones BAR decided to include, like the Chainsaw.
Getting this now!
Very happy to see you promoting someone's FREE offering of their hard, excellent work. Thank you!
I've played this game and can HIGHLY recommend its immense quality. For ANY fan of RTS, you'll lose yourself in the pure insanity this game has to offer. Hats off that it caught your eye, Mack. Stay awesome! ^-^
Thank you ❣
I can't believe this video came out 2 days ago. I downloaded the game once I saw this and have played so many games that it feels like it's been a week.
OMG been playing it for 1 month, this game is about to explode and get the recognition it deserves
wow glad i spotted this video been playing for the last 6 hours im loving it
Total annihilation was an immense game, the fantasy version was great too. Its great to see these games getting a new lease of life.
Thanks for showing us this Mack!!! I never knew.
I'm just about to play! Thank you developer! I'll make sure I donate a few quid!!
Been playing this on and off, I really want a "save scenario" option as I love to gradually turn up the difficulty of a specific setup.
Thanks for the recommendation. It looks like so much fun to play.
The scenarios are a lot of fun too Mac!
You finally found this one!
Ah I miss playing Total Annihilation - if nothing else this it will be a great nostalgia trip.
have you played with the experimental units? Or the 3rd faction? (you have to enable them in the adv options of the map.)
Some absolutely nuts units like the cannon that shoots out the tier 1 robots.
T3 is specifically labeled as expiramental gantry, unless you're talking about legion stuff
@@andrewgreeb916 No, I mean the extra units like the Mega Pawn or the Pawn Launcher. Totally broken in terms of balance I think, but fun to play with.
It's labeled "Extra Unit Pack" in the experimental tab in the advanced options pane
Loved TA... This game looks really interesting, thx for the review.... downloading now
It's a great game!
There's also a massive map pack (2gigs) to download, I highly recommend.
Amazing video mate. I wish and hope another faction comes into the game and ingame voice chat. The developers deserve the best RTS game of the year by far.
Can't wait for the Campaign to be added later on. : D
Speaking of RTS, Spellforce reforced came out last year to console. It’s a top down RPG RTS hybrid. Really good, all spoken dialogue, decent story, fun builds. One of my favorite games. Not many RTSs on console though. 5 different races with their own resource gathering methods, buildings and such. Can play against AI or online coop or versus.
this looks more like a proper spiritual successor to total annihilation than supreme commander ever did
got it thanks to this review, and i'm hooked too. amazing thanks Mack for finding and promoting this beautiful game!
Really interested. Might have to play this tonight after work.
Can't believe I hadn't heard of this!
Thank you for recommending this. Looks really interesting.
great, thanks for that recommendation👍
Ahh, the solar panel Egyptian Pyramids, how quaint.
Love your videos, however the starship troopers review does need A clarification. You cannot see enemies through walls unless a player has placed a scan beacon which shows arachnids and increases damage on them. This does not happen if there is no scan beacon present.
I think I'll give this a go sometime. Thanks Mac
Total Annihlation 2023? YES PLEASE
Yeah this one brings back memories... thanks for sharing.
Ever since SILCA,iv been looking for a great RTS game, and ofcourse i just paid 12.99 for supreme commander, which you cant rebind the dam keys. Wish this vid came out yesterday lol
thanks for the recommendation pal
Hey Mac I've checked out this game after your review.
What a Gem !
It is too bad the RTS genre became obsessed with starcraft style design and not total annihilation style design. The fact that we have had the spring engine for years and years providing a damn good total annihilation spiritual successor is amazing.
36 Seconds into your review before I downloaded and installed. Definitely Worth a Buy!
I thought i would go for Sancturary Shattered Sun, but when i see this game and how incredible it is, I'm now seriously considering to stick to BAR if i want som fun with a serious RTS .... The Amount of tech which has been put in it, the just f***** incredible number of units and maps, the GFXs which recently got updated, i hardly see how i could get a better experience with an "about to come out" new game. Not saying Sanctuary won't be cool, but i hardly see how they could deliver as much quantity/quality/fun while BAR is being improved since so many years.
Great game and review all together
Checking it out. Thanks!
Yet another game Mack has discovered thats perked my interest.
I've just started playing that game thanks to that review and Jesus it's good, very very good. Highly recommended
this game has been the gem i found recently devs are awesome and the community is awesome
Thank you ❣
Hey Mac, im waiting for your review of Alient Dark Descent. ill decide whether to buy it based on your thumb direction !
Beeing a Total Annihilation fan from back in the days myself, I was delighted when a friend of mine recommended this game to me about a year ago. Playing the modernized maps I remember from the original game in BAR is bringing back so much nostalgia and TA was my absolute favorite rts, closely followed, but never surpassed by Warzone 2100, Dark Reign and of course Starcraft.
But dispite all that I have to slightly disagree on your opinion of the ai. In BAR you can easily have a couple of matches in a row, where you think "Wtf are my allies doing?" You can catch them building defense towers, not long range, at the edge of the map on the point farthest away from the enemy and none or almost none at the points that get attacked first. It send its commanders into battle and has them die in insignificant fights, while swarms of its troups weasel around in its base when they are urgently needed elsewhere. And what annoys me constantly is ally construction taking place in the middle of my base, ways away from their homebase. I had a match very recently, where my units couldn't even leave my base anymore, because my friendly neighbor build energy structures on every possible passge from my base, effectively fencing me in. A setting to deny them building closer than a certain distance to my structures would be very much appreciated, but is sorely missing. Their units are not stopped by walls you put up, they not just pass them, they destroy them when their pathfinding tells them to go that way.
Still, I agree that this is a good game, far beyond what the industry giants have to offer. And a must for every old TA fan.
Total annihilation still is my number one RTS. This looks amazing and I will definitely pick this up
Your Bad Bad Joke was right when my install finished..
I love making an "army" of Rotary Defense Cannons and just sitting back enjoying my Robot Simcity, hahaha
I'm not a big strategy game player, but this actually looks good.
Haven't played an RTS for this. I will be dropping some cash on this to support the developers.
Just a heads-up: We just reopened our direct donations on our website! ♥
You didnt mention that part, you can play it competitively as well if you want and also getting widgets to the game that can improve the gameplay experience, and they are also legal, literal extra feature and UI to the game. If you are not happy by something like a simple mechanic, that surely can be modified to suit you by widgets scripts or something. :)
Will check out!
Can't wait to try this since there has been a void in these types of games since starcraft stopped being made
Someone asked me the other day which youtube channel i like the most.. Took me a second to think of any i care about, then i remembered this one.. No brainer, best reviewer out there. One of 2 channels i click on every time.
Sounds like these guys have done for the RTS genre what Battlebit has just done for the ‘battlefield genre’. AAA developers can do one like
Free?! One of my favorite words
I tried this one out a little while back and it just made me go install supreme commander FA again
FAF sux. what kind of s shitty simulation is it? units shooting through one another like they are made of air. command lag.. in short game sux
