  • Third in a series of videos captured in China in 1990, wonderful Chengdu and Leshan brought fascinating history to life amidst superb vistas of Chinese rural lifestyle and culture. Pandas, painting and many other amazing handicrafts by very skilled and intensely industrious people continued to provide a much deeper understanding of this amazingly ancient civilization.and it's gradual emergence to rejoin the rest of the world. Twenty two year old video - shaky though it be - provides a marvellous picture of this ancient land! Enjoy!!

      Hu Frank I'm now aged a very creaky ninety and my slightly younger wife is now in full time care in an old peoples home - so, very sadly, our wonderful travels in your magnificent China will forever remain only in our memories of our astonishing travels twenty five years ago!Lucky you to be in such a fast growing city in such a vital part of your amazing country - where the future opportunities of the world now lie with decisions being made in China! The wisdom of a very old civilisation to guide this complex world into the future is now utterly essential!!

    I am so sorry that I do not have an understanding of your wonderful language - but I do hope that your message says that you enjoyed my video of Chengdu and Leshan as much as I enjoyed seeing those amazing sights and encountering the proud residents of that extraordinarily beautiful and creative part of your truly magnificent China way back in 1990. Long may it be so, as China awakes to take it's rightful place in this complex world of today!!

    this Video shock me! It’s my six year old view in my memory about this road, that age I always take a bus from chengdu to leshan for whole day! Now we just need one hour for this journey by hi-speed train, it’s a fantastic change in our life! Thanks again to this video carrier!

    Have watched this clip a few times and cried every time when I was watching. The video reminds me what I have seen when I was a child, the Hotel, the buses, the markets at the side of the streets. I still can remember everything vividly. I miss my childhood and the old city much. The current city, I went back a few times over the past 10 years, has experienced too many changes. Old buildings have been demolished. Mud alleys are replace by boarded streets. May be changes are good. But to me, the city is no longer the one I recognize.

    • @nleeder
      @nleeder  9 років тому +12

      +zhongrui wang. It is so sad that you so much miss the irreplaceable magic of that superb city of your childhood. Yes...change is unstoppable everywhere ....my much loved old home town of Sydney is nowhere near as nice as the one I loved so much as a child....but that was ninety years ago!!! I guess that we can both rejoice that we knew the very best of our much loved home towns when they WERE at their best and when we were both wide-eyed and always saw them at their peak, in our view at least! Wonderful memories like this will always remain with us, whatever happens, and always bring a warm smile of true pleasure to our faces!!! Long may it be so!!!!

    Hi zhoutingtit. Your so powerful message says it all! My wife and I were left with a VERY strong feeling about the great depth of affection the residents of Chengdu felt for their wonderful home town. Of course, it has changed so much since we enjoyed it in 1990 but, somehow, we sense that special feeling of belonging of those born there will never diminish - as your message so clearly says!! My wife and I hope you enjoy every moment back in your so-much-loved home town!! Noel Leeder.

    My first trip to China was in 1996 with my high school geography class from Canada. This was the China that I remember! Bicycles everywhere, dusty streets, smoky little Shijiazhuang vans, horns honking day and night, street vendors on hand-drawn carts. Far cry from what China is today.

      It's born *in* Chengdu, not *at* Chengdu. When you are talking about place, then use "in". When you are talking about a particular building or area within a city, then use "at". For example, I was born at a hospital in Chengdu in 1987.

    Hi DI519. I'm so pleased that you liked my 1990 video of Chengdu - yes, a fascinating glimpse of a more simple (and, maybe, more cohesive) lifestyle than it seems to be now in the more "open" China of today. I worked briefly as a coal carbonisation specialist advising the Chinese government in Shaoguan in upper Guangdong province in 1982 and found the lifestyle then even more fascinating but obviously headed for change to compete internationally. You will find much more change next month!!

    It is amazing to see how much the city has changed in just two decades. Only very few places, like Renminnanlu and the Mao statue remained the same. Traffic is so different from today's traffic as well. Would've loved to be there back then, but then again it wouldn't have been a lot of fun as an infant.... Really great footage!

      Jere Cullen Yes. I recall them and the amazing dexterity the drivers showed in manoeuvring around other traffic without their long and far-reaching poles losing contact with the overhead wires - although, one time, I saw an awful traffic jam caused by the pole coming off the wire and then tearing it down!! Ah!! Started lots of fond memories!!!!Enjoy your wonderful Chengdu!!!!!!!!!!!!
