Smoking ban: 'This is not about demonising smokers,' says health secretary

- Under the proposed smoking ban, someone who was born on or after 1 January 2009, will never legally be allowed to buy tobacco.
It would effectively raise the legal age for buying cigarettes in England by one year every year, until it applies to the whole population.
Health Secretary Victoria Atkins said, "this is not about demonising current smokers."

"not about demonising smokers" yet smokers clearly live shorter less productive lives?! We have the freedom to be smoke free already, is alcohol or sugar next? Or even cars? It seems like a ridiculous point but banning tabacco seems ridiculous to me. I should have the freedom to make my own healthy and unhealthy choices as a responsible adult.

I’m an ex smoker and drinker, I started both habits with no encouragement and gave them both up , that’s called freedom of choice, governments need to crack down on crime in the UK and stop busying themselves with this nanny BS

What tosh the biggest threat to life currently is the food chain. 1 in 100 people have coeliac erosion (disease) in their intestines with an estimated 500.000 undiagnosed. Look at all the immune deficiency diseases currently millions are affected by them. Is the government concerned of course not. As long as it can continue to blame pollution diseases and other conditions on smoking it will, it is a great blind to help stop people looking at the real causes of early death. The FOOD INDUSTRY & POLLUTION BOTH IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE WORKPLACE. We will never forget how few cases of covid constituted a pandemic and put the government into panic mode.

I gave up smoking in my youth as a result of seeing a TV item about a woman in her fifties who had both legs amputated below the knees because of circulatory problems caused by it. I gave up immediately. Lungs have the job of processing oxygen, not toxic fumes which can contain arsenic.

Smoking is the only habit that immediately and directly hurts everyone around the smokers vicinity. Passive smoke fumes are a serious health threat. For that reason alone i support a ban. It's a selfish habit with no regard to the health effects it has on those around them
