      Motif Legend Let me start off by saying GREAT VIDEO. Your honest feedback is definitely a big help. I have a deep / smooth / sometimes raspy if needed voice. I do hip hop (if you need to hear my voice and recordings for perspective you can head over to my channel) and I'm thinking about hitting up that 700 - 1000 dollar range. Looking into a TLM 102, what do you think of this mic for adding that "meat" that I'm always searching for when using other mics from the nt1a category? I really like the way that sounded at the end of the video? Is that a TLM 102 u are using during the final clip? If so I think I've already made up my mind! It sounds super beefy and buttery smooth on your voice. What kind of mic pre or interface are you using. I have a stack specifically for a mic and I want to spend it wisely!

      I used a Neumann 103 and a Studio 192 interface, which is what I use now. But the 102 is really really nice. If you can find a good used 103 you will be in business. That's what I did. Good luck fam

    Totally agree with your perspective on this. After a lot of research and practical experience, I have to say you're much better off spending less on the mic (RØDE mics are excellent quality and truly belong in the $450-650 range), and investing the money on your interface. Recording a RØDE NT1 through the Neve or UAD control strips on an Apollo interface gives the kind of warmth, depth, and character that you get with a vintage Neumann U47 or U87. I've had Neumann snobs pick the RØDE for better sound quality 9 times out of 10 in an ABX test. In today's world, with technology being where it is and the distribution channels absolutely mangling the sound quality with their compression algorithms, there is no need whatsoever to invest a lot of money on a mic. Wytse from White Sea Studio tested some condenser mics he got from Amazon with a boom arm and pop filter for $22 against some Neumann/Telefunken U47s on a grand piano. Yes, they sounded HORRIBLE at first. But, with some EQing with Pro-Q³, he got them to sound shockingly close. RØDE make exceptional gear, and they back it up with the best warrantee in the industry. My personal favorite mic of all time for recording anything from voice over, to snares, to cellos is the original CAD e100, but I keep a couple of those and a RØDE NT1 and RØDE NT1-A around because sometimes they have just the right character for the job. I highly recommend the RØDE NT1 + AI 1 package. For the price, you can't beat it. I wouldn't use the AI 1 for my main interface, but it's extremely quite and transparent, is USB buss powered, and is great when you just need to have something you can take anywhere. The included Rycote shock mount and pop filter plus the AI 1 make the mic almost free.

    My personal experience: that missing presence and sharpness came back when I took off the double-metal-mesh grill. Drop that. Get a nylon-mesh pop-filter, or back away and talk 45 degrees off axis, no pop filter....that's all-pro. The NT-1 or the NT-1A are excellent bare and off-axis. You have great advice for the beginner. The low noise allows distance. And: conditioning the walls/booth is #1 , ahead of the mic. Enjoy.

      At4050 is a nice mic try it. They did a shoot out on another channel with a u87 and they both sounded great, very much the same character with a little bit more warmth in the u87. Again would be almost impossible to detect in the mix.

  • @xaosnox
    @xaosnox 6 років тому +1

    Good points in this video. I like that mic a lot better than the NT1A. If I was going to get a new mic right now in that price range, I'd get a CAD e100 vintage mic off of eBay. Saw one last week for $225. That's an incredible deal, and, to me, it sounds way better than the new CAD e100s. It's hard to tell, but the shock mount is also included with both CAD mics. It's just very low profile, so you can't really tell it's there.

  • @AironExTv

    Thanks for the review. I’ve tried this mic but do not own one yet myself. This mic is pretty neutral, so throwing some spice on the recording could do the trick. The new Waves distortion units, Klanghelm SDRR(24€!!) and so many others can be that spice, as can interesting compressors such as the SKNote Distressor clone(another inexpensive character comp) or indeed another Klanghelm plugin, the MJUC. Clean and neutral is a good starting point and spice is readily available, so the NT1 kit is a fine piece of kit in my book as well. It‘s on my to-buy list for being reliable, flat, clean and inexpensive.

      Airon Extelevision True. I sold my Neumann TLM 49 for this mic tho.

    • @AironExTv
      @AironExTv 5 років тому

      RM It just needs to work for your voice or whoever it‘s for. I recorded many voice over and ADR lines with a TLM 193. It worked really well on female voices and some males, but it worked less well on others. When it takes some processing to get right, that’s alright as long you can find that path. Buddy of mine recorded his voice with a nice TLM tube iirc with a Focusrite RED7 preamp. It was dull as hell but it lit up with a good compressor. That‘s why I‘m a fan of flat mics when I‘m on a budget. For 0 to 30€ there are software compressors that‘ll make vocals pop, especially stuff on sales lik some Waves plugins. As soon as I want to record some voices with lots of detail again, I‘m going for this NT1 kit. It has all I need.

    • @raffaelrudolf
      @raffaelrudolf 5 років тому

      Airon Extelevision I absolutely agree with you. I use an UA Apollo Twin, and with these plugins I can achieve analog sounding vocals. It’s amazing how far technology has come.

    From what I've seen, the mic does have a very flat frequency response, which would explain that lack of meatiness you were talking about. I'm pretty sure the NT1-A is tuned a bit differently, which might fix those issues. Using EQ could also help as well I'd imagine. Very good review! Definitely thinking of upgrading to this at some point!

    Personal opinion good mic but if you understand how sound works in using different audio interfaces, proper EQ and compression techniques, and different plugins for audio effects the mic won't be an issue. A $300-$500 mic will usually get you what you need in terms of crisp good quality sound. The real trick is having a good sound engineer that can capture and highlight your voice at certain points of your song. Besides most peoples voice in mainstream are auto-toned anyways.
    Good luck.

    1:29 - So very true! Thank you for saying it! The NT1 has a very flat "natural sounding" response profile, while the NT1-A has a presence boost in it's profile ("character") that is very similar to the Shure SM58. But the SM58 can't hold a candle next to a Rode. Thanks for this video!

    It lacks character because it's frequency response is flat, so u can easily add it in, in post.

    the build of the newer rode nt1 mic is alot better because there's no build-in shock mount inside the mic (its the reason why they break easily and people have to be more fragile with them) also has a circle pop filter and better shock mount. sadly the kit with the interface hasn't been updated but hopefully it will.

      for any microphone that is xlr any XLR cable is what your supposed to use so any xlr works if its not broken. the only time that should change is if its a tube mic in that case the xlr cable will have more pins on it and will most likely come with that specific tube mic.

      Honestly, I would go for the NT1 Ai1 Kit, since it comes with everything you need to start recording immediately. On the other hand, you have the SM7B, which requires a high-end preamp, and even then you will need to turn the gain all the way up to even hear something, and then you will hear this annoying hissing sound that you will never be able to get rid of before recording. Of course there are mic preamps that you can use for the SM7B in case you don't have a high-end interface, but non of them will get rid of the hissing sound. Personally, I do not tolerate that hissing sound and I rather my recordings to be clean. I also recommend treating the room you record in, maybe putting some acoustic panels in your walls so you don't have much reverb in the recording.

    • @jaimesk1688
      @jaimesk1688 2 роки тому

      The SM7B is for podcasting! The NT1 is for performing...voiceover or singing...isn't 'boxy' like the SM7B.. The big condenser mics give you far more deep and even range, for your lows. A deep male voice needs careful EQ for hi-pass...80 or 100Hz ...you can do that with the software after, or buy a mic with a high-pass switch. NT-1, NT-1A, AT2035, RM800, (premium) LCT440-Pure...those are prime voice talent mics.

    Hey brother! Thanks for the video :)
    Quick consult - these days i am looking to make a home studio and am looking for a mic.
    Now i got to the NT1, but as you said - I Can afford a bit more.
    The thing is that in that "a bit more" world i'm entering to a whole new world of mics.. Could you aim me for a few mic types you would recommend which are a level up above the NT1? Planning on recording Guitars (and maybe other insturments) in addition to vocals.
    Once again, great video,
    And the rap in the end - dope.
    peace :)

    I just bought this mic used for $125. I figure for that price it is a hell of a mic to have and a great upgrade from USB mics. I'm wondering, you said this mic could lack a little character at times, were you able to get any of that back later from adding effects and mixing etc?

      +Romeo jR but for a Rode, you don't need that you can just buy a 40 dollar stand and it'll be good. Hell a Chinese one would be fine too. Unless you want to suspend it upside down would you need something heavy duty and sturdy

    Hey man, thank for awesome reviews! Do you think NT1 is worth the money in comparison with NT1-a?

    • @MotifLegend
      @MotifLegend  7 років тому +4

      +bkfloyd94 I think that people whom are fans of Rode will tell you the NT1 is the better microphone than the NT1A. To me, it all comes down to your own preference and voice. If you think it sounds good with your voice, then by all means go for it. Personally, the noise floor on the NT1 is so good that I would go with it over the NT1A, that's a big thing for me being in a home studio. Good luck!

    • @BrunoKrnetic
      @BrunoKrnetic 7 років тому +2

      Thank you very much for such a quick response and for being nothing but honest! Subscribe deserved.
      Meanwhile I've watched plenty of NT1 vs NT1A videos and so far NT1 is definitely a winner in my opinion. Other than that, what are the other mics in that price range and quality you could suggest? My main goal is to buy one which will give me the best quality for recording vocals and acoustic guitar in my home studio. If it can deal with miking electric guitar, even better. Even tho for that purpose I'm about to get SM57 which I would combine with some other mic later.
      Any suggestions and opinions are welcome!
      Huge thanks!

    • @MotifLegend
      @MotifLegend  7 років тому +1

      +bkfloyd94 no problemo my man. Happy to do it.
      What I would say is that I would more so focus on getting your room or studio area treated well so you don't get any unnecessary echos and reverb. This way when you get to mixing, you are going to be in really good shape. You will be able to get a real flat natural sounding response.
      The NT1 will do really good and that's honestly a strength of it, it's acoustic performance. Now other microphones that you can look into, are Blue Microphone bluebirds (I really like this microphone) and an audio technical 4040. See if you can go to a local guitar center to test a microphone to buy.
      Hope this helps. Good luck!
