SoFloRR 1018 ya, my grandparents used to live near a level crossing the was on this line (aka the Chicago racetrack) and you could barely get through the crossing on rush hour XD
I love it how Metra is slowly switching to electric. I'm hoping soon most people of their trains turn to electric (not the EMD F40PHs are still my favorite Metra engine. ALSO! Fun fact-Metra trains are the first IRL trains I ever saw, followed my BNSF, THEN NS, then Amtrak (my grandparents used to live like 100-500 yards away from a 3-7 track level crossing in Brookfield, IL)
Again, when in the video do you hear the sound that you're talking about? I might be able to tell you what it is if you tell me what you're talking about
It's the air compressor, the sound it makes has been nicknamed the GE whoop compressor sound. It happens quite often, and it's not only when the train starts moving. The locomotive has to maintain air pressure for the brake system, so the compressor goes on when it needs to
Flex Mann Which train though, theres a lot in my video that he could have caught. And snuffy has a lot of videos, Im not gonna search through every one of them
Gary Plastek also it's mainly only located in the Chicago area (includes the downtowns by the main city, all the mini cities around it that are connect to Chicago, and the suburbs around Chicago like Milwaukee, Aurora, Joliet, ect.)
+Railroadfan5383 I hope you can see it and I hope you can get better internet so you can upload again, I love your work. I will probably be uploading my video on 90221 this morning
Im still active, but my internet has been extremely slow and has caused me to stop uploading till I can get a faster service. Not to worry, I do have videos waiting to be uploaded asap.
Amtrak sometimes sends F59PHIs to Chicago and then to Beech Grove, IN to fix whatever problems the F59 is having that the shops out in California cant take care of. Im not sure what specific problems the locomotive shops out there are incapable of fixing, but I do know thats the main reason they come my way.
Well, from looking at the date of filming, it would suggest that 455 was sent to Beech Grove, but not to be fixed. It was in fact healthy at 10:10. Although 455 is and always has been a piece of crap (a problem unit), having been somewhat of a shop queen for a while. It has suffered many failures, one being catastrophic. I don't know the exact date the catastrophic failure occurred, but I do remember seeing 455 sitting in Los Angeles in the Amtrak yard adjacent to the diesel service facility after the failure. It looked really bad. Like really bad. 455 suffered what most call an engine explosion, yet it somehow was still able to pull its train until the engineer noticed that the locomotive was on fire in some spots, and spewing flames from the stack. It was found after investigating that when the engine exploded, it threw parts of all kinds everywhere. At least part of a piston head made it up the exhaust stack. If memory serves, the train was evacuated as the engine fire got really bad, necessitating the help of the fire department. I'm not sure how or where 455 was repaired, but clearly it happened. I'd say it either went to Beech Grove, or it went back to EMD. Fast forward to when this video was filmed. Amtrak's F59PHIs are getting a little bit on the older side and some units are showing their age. Amtrak realizes something needs to be done, so each and every one of the F59PHIs make their way in and out of Beech Grove as part of a rebuild and modernization program. Each unit was thoroughly inspected, receiving repairs and/or replacement parts along the way. Each unit also was fitted with an E-bell. Essentially the program ensured problems would be much less frequent and freed up P42DCs for service on the Coast Starlight, Sunset Limited, and Southwest Chief. It would be safe to assume that given 455's history, Beech Grove did not mess around and made sure 455 would run better. This is why 455 was on the Chief. It was fresh out of the rebuild and modernization program. The crew likely allowed it to provide power to the train as sort of a road test, which is why you hear it go from high idle/run 1 to run 8. If it were me I'd take an extra 3,200 hp any day.
Amtrak In O Scale interesting. How do you get this info, I’d like to learn myself. That’s sad to hear, 455 has been one of my favorites. Do you know which other units are strong/weak? Just of the 14 other surfliner engines of course.
Metra goes through all the time, and during rush hour Metra trains are constantly going through. There's a few Amtrak trains that go by, the Southwest Chief, California Zephyr, and Carl Sandburg/Illinois Zephyr. Look up the schedule for them to find out when they go through exactly. As for freights, sometimes it can be busy, sometimes its dead and an hour or two will go by with not even 2 freights. But after the morning or evening Metra rush hour is a good time to go to catch freight trains because the racetrack becomes completely used by Metra trains, and freights are made to wait till rush hour is over. So once its over, they send them all through.
Yes I know, its a pure coincidence too. I saw 455 when I was much younger on a vacation to San Diego too. Kinda ironic its one of the first model trains I got too.
10:07 EMD throttle up, 455! :)
Dang, that's one busy line.
Ikr?!
SoFloRR 1018 ya, my grandparents used to live near a level crossing the was on this line (aka the Chicago racetrack) and you could barely get through the crossing on rush hour XD
That one locomotive was making so much smoke. Looked like a steam locomotive.

Same i also like F40s!
#F40PHMETRA
what is the name of those snub nosed metras i live right behind tyhe mdn tracks and never see em
Thank you Railroadfan for the answer to my question. When I saw the double decker railroad cars I assume they were for long distance runs.
Two level passenger cars doesnt mean anything in regards for distance, its just for more passenger capacity.
Nice catches! I liked the lash-up at 7:06 with the Executive BN cream and blue, a CEFX unit, and a CSX Narrow nose Dash 8!
Very nice camera work Fred!
Thanks Kyle! I could have done slightly better though.
love how Amtrak come in too the station doing 30 and jams on the brakes or should I say brakes kinda hard
+David Schieler Yea they did slow down a bit fast compared to Metra.
2 amtrak pacific surfliners engines in IL??why?
For maintenance purposes that cannot be performed out in California, So the maintenance is instead performed at beech Grove
What ia the "ba-loooop" sound when the train starts out?
When in the video?
@@Railroadfan5383 Seems like every time that Amtrak is starting down the tracks. I hear it a lot--sounds almost like a power surge.
Again, when in the video do you hear the sound that you're talking about? I might be able to tell you what it is if you tell me what you're talking about

Wright County Railfan 🌍🏕🏛🏜
Wright County Railfan B
loved the RED, WHITE,and BLUE paint on that engine # 90208
Gary Plastek 90208 is a veterans heritage NPCU F40ph locomotive overhauled to NPCU in 2003
I love the BNSF RACETRACK
Awesome footage and catches! Very professional-looking.
+msj191961 Thank you! Yea I try my best lol
7:19 Dash 8 narrow cab, nice catch
Awesome Video
Awesome video! I just subbed! I am going here on August 17th. What radio frequency is that?
Snuffy's Cat also recorded the same train in California. just look for the loco's numbers on his video.
Flex Mann Which train though, theres a lot in my video that he could have caught. And snuffy has a lot of videos, Im not gonna search through every one of them
Nice! I was hoping the NPCU would be sent to the downeaster but that didn't pan out.
Nah, its used in SoCal and region, it only came to Chicago to go to Beech Grove to be painted into the Veterans Paint scheme and then go back.
***** I hope it gets swapped.
+Maine Railfan© I doubt, given its literally on the other side of the country.
***** eh if it needs work it may happen since the downeaster is down to 2 or 3 NPCU's when they run 4 to 5 trains
+Maine Railfan© I still doubt it, given that Amtrak has painted 3 Veterans units, the 642 being out East, 90208 being out West, and 42 for the middle or the country or elsewhere. They are for painted for public relations in their respective areas they are used, if the downeastern really needed an NPCU theyd come from Chicago, Amtrak wouldnt make 90208 spend a whole week to move it across the country just because they need NPCUs. They would send whats easiest and/or closest. And 90208 is neither of those. And Chicago can logically send an NPCU, as they can put a Dash8 in place of an NPCU on the Hiawatha or Pere Marquette.
Is Metra for local travel only or do they do long distance like Amtrac
Metra is the commuter railroad for Northeast Illinois, Amtrak is for the entire country.
Gary Plastek also it's mainly only located in the Chicago area (includes the downtowns by the main city, all the mini cities around it that are connect to Chicago, and the suburbs around Chicago like Milwaukee, Aurora, Joliet, ect.)
Oh and where are you now
Nice vid!
Thanks!
What was that blue engine on that bnsf with the csx
Thanks for filming!
at 8:50 i think the surfliner engine 455 was smoking really bad...i live in southern california
It was P42 #200 that was smoking
That puff of smoke was the UP SD70 starting up. They shut off the prime movers to conserve fuel.
Yep, railroads have put a lot of rules and guidelines to conserving as much fuel as possible, even if a train waits for a very short time.
Will you catch 90221? have you caught it yet? I just caught it yesterday!
90221 is a Chicago based NPCU. I haven't caught it yet with its new paint, but I plan on catching it soon. It should stay on the Hiawatha for a while.
+Railroadfan5383 I hope you can see it and I hope you can get better internet so you can upload again, I love your work. I will probably be uploading my video on 90221 this morning
Where did you go? 3-month no upload 😢
Im still active, but my internet has been extremely slow and has caused me to stop uploading till I can get a faster service. Not to worry, I do have videos waiting to be uploaded asap.
Why no uploads?
So I get why the NCPU is in Chicago, but why is there an Amtrak surf liner f59phi over there

Railroadfan5383 Socal shop can do most things but Beech Grove does everything so that's why F59s get sent to Beech Grove
Railroadfan5383 So was this video shot after 455 was fixed at beech grove? She sounds pretty healthy at 10:10

Wow i cant believe that you saw that many trains in one hour
Was 455 coming back from Beech Grove after overhaul? If not, why else was it going west from the east?
California Zepher or Southwest chief?
Both are featured in the video. But I made a mistake when labeling one of them.
california zephry #4? i thought CZ are #5-6?
Holy cow your right, I made a mistake. Ughh. Sometimes I work myself too hard making these videos and it went right past me.
***** don't be too hard on yourself, mistakes happen. We are only humans!
Do you plan on uploading anymore?
Yes I do. Not sure how soon though.
Ok.
How often does a train go through there?
