Lady Bird's Mother is EVIL

  • Nothing will ever make me feel like Lady Bird does. She is a teenager growing up in a struggling household, with a mother who is difficult to communicate with, and dreams of moving to New York for college. These are one of the many things that help me put myself in her shoes.
My mother never claimed her love for me outright either, but when I came to New York, she called me one day bawling; she said her entire life had been about me and she had nothing to live for now that I was away from her. Then I met Ana in my painting class, with whom I instantly became friends. She was also from California and this movie was one of the many things we bonded over. This movie holds my story within itself in its details.
Among the many thing that are misunderstood about it are the love of Lady Bird's mother. Some claim it to be cruel. But just as I see myself in Lady Bird, I see my mother in Marion. This video contains some details that might help us sympathise with her.

I have to disagree with you about the mother - Marion is emotionally abusive towards Lady Bird throughout the film, I think it's wrong to wave this away as the mum 'loving her'.
Insulting your child, giving them the silent treatment, this is not a normal or acceptable way to treat them.

Yes. She is emotionally abusive. Disdain, possessiveness, vanity cannot exist if there is true love. Her mother has issues she has not healed, and she cannot be blamed for that. However, she is projecting those issues and making her daughter's life hell.
Marion's mother was an abusive alcoholic. That's terrible, but she had some closure as to why her mother did the things she did: the alcohol. Lady Bird will almost never get closure, at least didn't get it in the movie, about why her mother hates her and judges her in every little way possible. This is traumatic. Passive instilled fear and hate throughout the years into the child. So tragic.
Her mother is not a dichotomy of a good mother with bad sides. She is a bad mother lol. She gave her child everything except the one thing she needed, love.

You seem like a very nice person but being concieved as an extension of your mother is just sinister. Don’t you think?

As a child one can't help but be an extension of the people that raises and loves them. Whether we choose to be alike them or unlike them, it is their slight influence regardless.

Lady bird is a self-obsessed, fake deep teenager and i will die on this hill. I don’t have the best relationship with my mother and i think some people shouldn’t forgive their parents but there was literally nothing wrong with her mothers actions. Lady bird hated authority from everyone. She was racist to her own brother Miguel, awful to her best friend/mother/father/shelly/teachers. You are not supposed to sympathise with lady bird. She is supposed to be an annoying pretentious teenager. The reason this movie sucks is because it does nothing to challenge perceptions, does nothing to engage in sympathy for the real struggles that white teenage girls and others alike-go through. It doesn’t even do anything to entertain you at all.

I have to disagree about the mum - Lady Bird's mum was emotionally abusive to Lady Bird throughout the film - constantly insulting her daughter, belittling her, chipping away at her, and giving her the silent treatment for daring to go to a college in New York.
The way the mum treats her is not normal or acceptable, in this video she says to her daughter 'you're not even worth state tuition' - who says that to their own daughter?

You're actually very wrong, and here you perpetuate one of the most toxic viewpoints. There's a reason not many people have died on this hill of yours. In fact, so many teenagers have actually been impacted by this movie, including me. And I am neither white nor a girl. This struck so close to home because it targeted one of the core issues about parents which you fail to address. Yes, Lady Bird is an asshole teenager. Yet she learned from her mistakes, she makes up with her best friend, her gay ex-boyfriend, her brother. She realises her stupidity.
Her mother on the other hand is not even close to ever realising her own BS and toxic behaviour throughout the movie. At the end she wasn't even the one who sent the letters to her daughter, her dad was. Her DAUGHTER makes takes the step to forgive the mother which she didn't even need to do! She had every right to hate her mother for emotionally abusing her, not even saying goodbye as she flies alone to the other side of the country. Why? Because of the mothers own ego. Because she couldn't accept that Lady Bird is an independent human being with her own views, interests and issues. She wanted her daughter to be how she wanted. That is not love. Instead, Lady Bird took the step to forgive her parents. She was the only truly inspirational one in this movie, plus the dad.

Don't speak for all daughters, I watch this movie to remind myself why I don't speak with my mother anymore. I don't want this kind of love, it's simply not worth the hurt.
