    What can you do with Noise?... turns out quite a lot. It's an essential component in sound design. Most synths have it, and if they don't people complain about it! From subtle lo-fi grains to utter distortion and destruction. Fire, flames, explosions, storms, risers, drops, wind and rain...
    I like using it on the less obvious filter FM and loft tones.

    This video is pure gold! A sort of dusty, crackly, lo-fi gold, but the very best of that kind of gold. There was one lightbulb moment for me where you used the filter modifiers (ADS) with the oscillator modulation turned on. I’ve had one of the 2022 re-releases of the Model D for about a year (and love it). However, the modulation mix set to “Filter EG” with the oscillator modulation on simply did not make sense to me. I could not understand what it was doing. In this video, you pointed to the attack/decay/sustain knobs … and it clicked for me. Duh! Yeah, I’m slow, but I still have so much fun.

    It's like listening to an episode of Jon Pertwee era Doctor Who :) Nice one, Starsky!

    this is always one of my favorite things to do on a synth. then i sample each sound into an MPC, resulting in a Model D drum kit to play on the pads

    I find that having a band-pass and high-pass filter helps a lot with getting good drum and percussion sounds, which don't sound too muddy or boomy and stick out in the mix. But if you don't have one, just slap on an EQ in the DAW and tweak there 🙂 And I also use that resonance as a poor-man's EQ trick as well.

    Modulating the filter with noise is one of my favorite synth sounds in general. Almost sounds like tube breakup in a weird way. A gorgeous texture. I especially love it on the MM and Prophet 5.

      Modulating the amp with noise is sometimes even more interesting. Unfortunately not many pre-wired synths can do this.

    There's even more: maracas, cabasa, gun shots, rain, tumble dryer, passing space ships (or fallling meteors) and then some. Other noise colours like red and blue can be quite useful. I enjoyed this episode as always. Looking forward to the Triangle episode.

    Great series of vids these. It's really good to chew on the technical aspects rather than just hit the factory patches. I like the sound design aspect of synths and I think you nailed it in your response to me the other day re the new Arturia box, some folk like presets and some are twiddlers/synth nerds. I reckon I have always been a nerd, synth or otherwise... Thanks.

    The pulse video was the most mesmerizing of the series to me because I love to look at a Juno 6, but this is super interesting in case of Krautrock inspiration. Looking at this panel makes me think that the Grandma's interface is a definite improvement on the Minimoog. Not sure what the purists would say.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  Місяць тому

      Yeah the pulse is mad because of the pianos and stuff. But I thought I’d be thorough and see where it took me. Noise is possibly a bit too geeky for most 🤓

    Nice. I wanted the Trigon 6 to be a polyphonic Minimioog... But it is not. For better or worse.

    Do you prefer noise white or pink?

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  Місяць тому +1

      It depends on the tone. But I think white is probably more useful all in all.

    If you watch the Synthpro videos, he compares a vintage Minimoog with a 2016 reissue, and you can clearly hear it doesn’t sound as good as the vintage Minimoog.
