    Don’t listen to the people who say not to ask for likes. Every UA-camr asks for likes and subscribers all the time. Sometimes people forget to hit like. You are just reminding them. I enjoy your videos and although I probably wouldn’t buy a refractometer, I enjoy watching your “experiments”.

    Hi Jack, you may not remember but a few weeks ago I recommended Lindfield Coffee Works to you. I have found out that they will post out to anywhere in the UK. I picked up a couple of bags on Saturday one of them being an anaerobic Costa Rican grown at 1800 metres.
    I'm not sure on the cost of postage but I highly recommend trying it

      Hi, Yes, I do remember. I just got 2kg of beans which should last me for a few weeks but anaerobic coffee can be awesome so I will try to get it.
      Thank you again for recommendations!

    Cool video. It looks like quite a neat little refractometer. Do you know if the application is on Apple App Store? Had a look but couldn't find one.

      I really wanted Atago refractometer but couldn’t justify spending so much for something that doesn’t really do much. Timemore-DFT was cheaper, about 1/3 of Atago price and smaller so I went for it.

    Hey. On the refractometer you have the temp shown when you take the reading. If you want to compare multiple shots or the same shot more times make sure you take the reading in the same temp interval, meaning if you read at 26C then do it here as much as possible (like +- .2C). The readings are proportional with the temp, if you read one shot at 27C the other one at 26C then the 26C will read higher. You can also calibrate it with water at the reading temp you will use it. I know from my 4 years of using one that in the winter I have a temp range and in the summer a higher temp range, because of the ambiental temp.
    There is a blogpost on J Gagne website about refractometer and reading protocol, specially about cooling the probe between readings. Good luck and great content.

      Hi, thank you for all the info. Do you filter your samples? Some people mentioned that. How many drops should I use?

    • @deenman60
      @deenman60 2 роки тому +1

      @@mycoffeeshow111 I do not filter the samples, the less sample you use (3-5 drops) the faster is cools to a stable temp. The temp will be a bit higher than your ambiental temp, but it's summer and it can be hot even in UK. Filtering samples would be beneficial only for publishing official data research.

    I’m looking into getting a refractometer sometime soon. Where did you buy this one?
    Did you filter the espresso in some way before you put it in the refractometer? The particles in it can mess with the readings you get.
    It’s probably good practice to recalibrate before every test. You could technically get away with doing it once per session, but I wouldn’t be confident in the readings.

    • @mycoffeeshow111
      @mycoffeeshow111  2 роки тому

      I bought mine from Sigma Coffee but you can find something on Amazon as well (link in the description).
      Some refractometers require to filter, some not. Not sure about this one but until I am told otherwise, I will just mix my coffee well b4 taking a sample.
      Thank you for watching!

    Hi, thanks for the vídeo, what application are you using??

  • @Pawel-D

    How cool! I've got the VST refractometer but I'm a bit jealous about yours. It seems a much better value for money, plus I like the looks! Congrats and enjoy! I'll be looking forward to objective numbers in your comparison tests :-)

    • @Pawel-D
      @Pawel-D 2 роки тому

      Ah, I forgot to add... With the VST there's a whole protocol of taking a read of total disolved solids. For instance you need to filter your espresso sample with an expensive syringe in order to remove any undissolved solids. It's not needed for filter brews like V60 as the coffee bed & paper keep the undisolved solids out of the final cup. One more crucial recommendation is to have the sample cool down to the room temperature otherwise the reading will be way up. Not sure if Timemore-DFT has a similar protocol, it might be worth checking their recommendations.

      Thank you. VST is a very professional refractometer, definitely too serious for me 😛

    • @Pawel-D
      @Pawel-D 2 роки тому

      @@mycoffeeshow111 Haha! So are you now tempted to redo your Pret episode, you know, pulling a hidden refractometer out of your jacket and secretly taking reads of their espresso? Obviously repeated for multiple shots please to verify the consistency as well? ;-)

      I have the Chinese generic refractometer and the small size is preferred, not to mention having the app and not having to calculate or use a site. Now you have to repeat your previous tests 😬😜.

    • @mycoffeeshow111
      @mycoffeeshow111  2 роки тому

      @@Pawel-D I know the workflow with VST is a bit more complicated. As soon as I learn how to read Chinese I will have all the answers about mine. In the meantime I will stay ignorant 😛

    Hy Jack just to tell you that there is nothing 100% perfect, but the refractometer is a tool that can help you achieve the best coffee in this case you can get, of course there are various variables, because everything from the coffee beans, the expresso machine, the grinder, the water you use for the shot, I mean everything can affect the reading or end result see, but in my mind if you are organized and follow the same steps repeatedly as possible you will enjoy the best coffee possible and you will be happy with the money you spent see, some people are more strict than others but that's life ahhh and it's a matter of preference too. I got my meter too and I am into testing to find some good numbers for my taste and try to keep achieving that curve or point in the chart which means you have a good (procedure/method) then you have a """"calibrated System/method"""" with all the parameters or values for the grinder, dose in grams, ratio like you said 1:2 on the machine, water quality and so forth to achieve the best coffee for my taste that is the goal at the end No. In my opinion Ok.

      Thank you for your insight. I’m not very organised person. In fact I am a pure chaos most of the time but I still find refractometer a useful tool from time to time. One day I will buy something more professional:expensive but for now this is perfect.
