Maybe the spiders had seen so many star voices stolen by the witch that it wanted to help the frog get a new one out of sympathy, so it tried to have it go to the stars at night to eat a new voice, which is why it waited till it was almost nighttime. The spider switching between its wrists because it couldn't remember which one the watch was on is one tiny example of the amount of care Colgrave puts into these works. Thanks for another masterpiece which I will watch probably around twenty times.
Watching a colgrave animation reminds me of being a kid when my dad took me to work the first time. All of a sudden I was in this new world. I saw things that I recognized, a stapler or a printer, but in this new context they were foreign, used in ways I didn't recognize. It's not that the office was chaotic, rather it had rules that were completely alien to me. I felt so small and out of place thrust into this strange machine. In a way, it was a lot like watching a lemur use the voice of a frog to make music.
It reminds me of childhood as well: because I learned to read early and spent good portion of my childhood reading myths and other folklore (the ethnographic type). I know their rules by heart, and Colgrave's animations follow it: some things in it may be new and modern, but the spirit, the rules of the world are older than writing and so, so familiar.

Well not quite, it's just a symbiosis between the species. The frog helps to protect the spider's eggs and the spider protects the frog from harm. Somethings may want to mess with a frog but no one wants to mess with a hairy, eight-legged beastie the size of a dinnerplate
The way he (main character) “swims” through the air…utterly “realistic”…somehow. This is brilliant. A perfect marriage of my love of animals - of all kinds, my love of music, and my immense appreciation of unique and extraordinary artistic talent. I’m simply blown away.
I feel like there's some message here about taking advantage of/exploiting/stealing someone's creative spark/works. leaving them behind an empty husk while the exploiter that does not understand the creative struggle/process bastardizes it into what they think will get them renown/recognition. And then everyone else is just cool with it because they're getting their entertainment until it happens to them/one of theirs. While the karma is that those with a creative spark never really lose it, they just re-imagine it through their suffering. Or it's just about a guy who likes poking frogs because he's a big weirdy, who knows
I think Felix just started messing around with sounds and decided to make a story about it. Either way, your interpretation of the video makes watching the video again really interesting.
As an Australian, this video is probably one of the most Australian things I’ve ever seen and it perfectly encapsulates the Australian experience. It has this sort of weird nostalgic feel for it that I can’t explain.
Why is nobody talking about how cool those 'voice stars' move? I love how they bounce around and turn into multi pointed stars when they talk. They have so much personality!
i think it's cool how the frogs' stars are generally 5-pointed when at rest, but the human's is 15-pointed. gives me the impression that it represents the more complex sounds of spoken language? idk
I can’t tell you how much I love this. It’s so visually creative, funny and I just love the attention to detail like the possum being incredibly loud. So good
Felix Colgrave is my favorite animator on all of UA-cam. His animations can be creepy, disorienting, beautiful, trippy, cryptic, and even slapstick hilarious all in one like in this. Always imaginative and always impressive.
Okay, did anyone see that among the "supported by" names there was freaking ALEX HIRSCH??? Aka the creator of Gravity Falls!? And there's Pendleton Ward, the creator of Adventure Time!
Every detail about this is so damn cool. From the very beginning with the bug's happy face and snazzy suit being just a pattern on its back, to the lighter in the frog's belly, to the way the star voice things are animated. Pure creativity
The "mistakes" you animate into the character's actions are so wonderful. The lil dude stretching the window on the computer in an uneven way, the slight overshoot of the mouse, the caterpillar adjusting his legs after he went too far forward. So good!
Considering how the cat found that the possum was responsible for stealing everyone's voice, it feels like a setup for a sequel following the little voice thief getting away but losing the voices and trying to track them down one at a time
Oh, I didn't realise that's what the cat was yelling about. I just thought it was funny that the cat, while tearing out a lorikeet's throat, was pointing the finger at someone else
Not likely, if you take a look at 7:07 the sky is filled with falling voices. This could imply that the possum-like creature threw it all away or that the cat and the rest of the animal crew made the possum get rid of the voices.
I think that everyone knew what the voices were and how the Witch makes music. Cat only cared because everyone cares only about their kind: they despise who they eat and hate who eats them. Taking a voice from someone they feel empaty to, though! You filthy cruel criminal
yea, especially if you pay attention to the scene where he switches hands to find his watch, and he aves good bye to the frog, who actually was holding a cup of tea when it was in that cabin with Spider, and they enjoyed some dead flies together!
As a bit of an animator myself... I am just totally AWE-struck by how magical this is, and how flawlessly every scene is put together... Only to be achieved by someone who has entirely devoted themselves to their craft. A true masterpiece.
I can't express my fascination with this particular animation enough. I absolutely love everything about this: the music, the sound effects, the character design, the animation. This is quality content.
I love how Felix goes extra with the details when he makes his animations. Like from the little icons bouncing when the cursor goes over them in the drawer to the spider checking all his legs to find which one has the watch. It just makes the video so unique and charming and all worth the wait. :) Edit: Some other things I'd like to mention that I feel like aren't appreciated enough. The computer that... big nosed animal was using had TWO cursors. That thing in the pot in the credits interacting with the changing text. The two black colored cockatoos that are moving as if being controlled by a computer mouse (this also goes for that man person's arm with the toilet brush towards the end). Also that spider has a mustache. Can you tell I like to rewatch this a bunch of times to find more details?
2:51 That animation of the Possum lighting a ciggie, laughing and releasing smoke is quite possibly one of the most impressive things I have seen this year. That was phenomenal work.
I was wondering if it might have been inspired by Hexxus, the oily/smokey/poisonous monster from the classic Australian animated movie Fern Gully as it was animated in a similar way, absolutely awesome work!
Also you can see these complex animations in some old Soviet cartoons. Some of them were basic, like most modern kid TV series - but some of them were complicated visual masterpieces.
yo homies i just wanna say Felix very accurately depicts the strangeness of existence, while also exploring a genuinely unique fantasy/surrealism that feels both familiar but also like a place, state of mind or a dream we've never been inside before :)
I keep coming back to this wonderful story and love letter to Tasmania's flora and fauna :-) You can tell that Felix Colgrave loves his home, extant and extinct, and how much it influences his art in the best of ways

It is very similar to the dreams we see. You have a really strong imagination. It even has a good ending and story.
The scene with the spider was actually pretty clever, because in real life spiders sometimes keep frogs as pets
Well not quite, it's just a symbiosis between the species. The frog helps to protect the spider's eggs and the spider protects the frog from harm. Somethings may want to mess with a frog but no one wants to mess with a hairy, eight-legged beastie the size of a dinnerplate

Or it's just about a guy who likes poking frogs because he's a big weirdy, who knows
in my professional opinion: it's a felix colgrave film
'Ooh I like pokin' frogs! Cause I'm a big winnie!'
Actually, no this makes sense especially with the message at the end about aboriginal sovereignty.
I think Felix just started messing around with sounds and decided to make a story about it.
Either way, your interpretation of the video makes watching the video again really interesting.
Or that all art is derivative, and originality is only about finding novel ways to repurpose that which has already been done
As an Australian, this video is probably one of the most Australian things I’ve ever seen and it perfectly encapsulates the Australian experience. It has this sort of weird nostalgic feel for it that I can’t explain.

@@Holgast I'm pretty sure that was an orange-bellied parrot, not a lorikeet
There's a cat voice in the hat, that's what the cat is angry about I think.
I think that everyone knew what the voices were and how the Witch makes music. Cat only cared because everyone cares only about their kind: they despise who they eat and hate who eats them. Taking a voice from someone they feel empaty to, though! You filthy cruel criminal

I love how Felix goes extra with the details when he makes his animations. Like from the little icons bouncing when the cursor goes over them in the drawer to the spider checking all his legs to find which one has the watch. It just makes the video so unique and charming and all worth the wait. :)
Edit: Some other things I'd like to mention that I feel like aren't appreciated enough. The computer that... big nosed animal was using had TWO cursors. That thing in the pot in the credits interacting with the changing text. The two black colored cockatoos that are moving as if being controlled by a computer mouse (this also goes for that man person's arm with the toilet brush towards the end).
