Swiss drug maker Novartis has lost a battle in India's highest court to patent an updated version of its cancer drug Gilvec. The Supreme Court has dismissed the application, saying the new version was only slightly different from the old one. The landmark ruling sets a precedent covering patents on all existing drugs in India. Updating medicines to gain new patents is known as 'evergreening.' Novartis has declared the modification took years of research and makes the drug more effective, and the company has succesfully patented the new version in nearly 40 other countries.

You know u have failed as a News Channel when the patent lawyer has better morals
one giant win in india
one baby step for morality in human race
BritishMoralHQ you are right. Indian court took a stand against the imoral Big Pharma.
Islamic Channel. same sick mentality about India. Concerned about how India refuse to play by their rules.
Newton could have patented calculus, Einstein could have patented relativity, ........BUT THEY WERE MEN OF SCIENCE..
NOT MEN OF NOVARTIS...
Problem iz newton didn't invent calculus
@@monsterchopper1613 how dare you say that?
@@monsterchopper1613 Leibniz and newton both created it just different notations and some were more popular than others. newton happened to be more popular.
That al jazeera guy i s not ready to listen to others point where he feels that he others are giving key info. He cuts them off.
Completely biased
David Foster has no idea about "evergreening" and the subject matter of the discussion.
When mass people can't afford such high price, when matter of life and death of community, you can't compare big fat companies profit has fallen down.
It's human values.
Indian supreme court has taken giant decision.
AL Jazeera's reporter taking side of novartis
Clearly,he said that,we expect N to file case against India
Blatantly sucking up to drug complained by stopping panelist from making bigger and more important points
Russia has thriving generic drug industry as well. In fact, generics are so dominant that most drugs are not even know under non-generic names.
Sounds like a 5 mins unambiguous news piece if the anchor was not so adamant to force his corporatized point of view.
Mr. Raymond nailed it. The perception and push of quatari host was india is on wrong side of this.
if create new drug formula does not mean you get to keep monopoly of old formula with open to all market once a patent die you should not have any way to revive the old patent.
Well, there is a problem if all the speakers are one side but the anchor has a different agenda. Atleast the speakers should be allowed to complete their point. Being boring and unproductive is lesser of a problem than being untrue. The story would have been better if they had got into the depths of this particular case and why the speakers are on the same side instead of playing the same old story of patents versus generics which might not be relevant here.
James literally closed the case at 8:59 for this Al Jazeera guy..
host was either ignonarant about patent laws or on payroll of pharma giants or had some beef with india they should really get a host who has some knowledge on the issue andis unbiased...and hosts should realize nobody wants to listen to them they want to listen to experts
How partial! I tried but I can't feel sorry for big pharma.
when u have monopoly globally then why not sell it globally at cheaper price, u will be making much more profit by that
I feel sorry for you! You have to defend something which you don't agree with.
IPR and that to Patent is highly intellectual matter which should be discussed or anchored by intellectual and individual having patent knowledge should have hosted this programme. Anchor has zero knowledge making him look radiculous fool in the discussion.
he has set of questions to be asked regardless answers by panel members.
Al Jazeera is the worst media channel..... i want to see what the hosts reaction be when his dear or near o e faces critical illness...
Let us pray to God 🙏 with both hands folded for the wellbeing and happiness for everyone in the Global World based on Love Light Peace And Justice.
glivec cost 69000 dollars annually then
I don't think anyone even in the US can pay for that
Bias.
Even 20 yrs is too long a time
host certainly on novartis payroll.
