  • On October 9th, 2022, I stopped by the Cleveland Cliffs Riverdale steel mill and found one of their ex-Acme Steel SW1s in action picking up a ladle from the CSP (Continuous Strip Processing) plant. I find this steel mill very interesting, as they get their molten iron from the blast furnaces at Indiana Harbor. Norfolk Southern trains deliver the iron in torpedo cars via the IHB. At Riverdale, the iron is made into steel at the BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace) and transferred to the CSP plant via ladle car, which is handled by the little SW1 featured in this video. I know this is only a glimpse at the operation, but I recently returned to Riverdale and covered much more of this unique steel mill in action. Look for that video soon!

Nice catch of the Cleveland Cliffs SW1 working in their Riverdale, Illinois steel plant. So, this is what the Cleveland Cliffs-ArcelorMittal-Acme Steel plant looks like close-up. I have seen this plant many times over the past 46+ years that I have lived in the south suburbs of Chicago. My views of the steel plant in the past have been seen while driving on Halsted Street or 127th Street/130th Street, while riding on Metra Electric trains and of course, while watching the hot metal train at Dolton Junction as the hot metal train is coming to or leaving the steel plant.

Thanks! I figured it was about time I get some video of the mill, something no one else has seemingly done. I would’ve loved to see the mill during the Acme era. There’s still an Acme painted SW1 sitting in the plant, however it hasn’t run in years.

Thanks. Not much history known about these units besides that they’re ex-Acme Steel. I wonder how old they are and how long they’ve been servicing Riverdale!

Wow, that model looks so real!
LOL, great views. That operation would make a great model railroad layout, sort of a side attraction to a very large layout that would service steel rolls. Or it could be the main layout with a major railroad spur servicing it.

Great video Sam! I used to use the Forest Preserve access road which would take past the area you filmed to get a sneak peek, but I went back there this year only to find that Cleveland Cliffs is using it as an entry gate for trucks. Used to love driving past here when Acme Steel was operational. Your drone showed me what I've been trying to see for years. Keep up the great work!

Thanks! I wish there was a better way to get views from the ground, but I guess that’s the reason I got my drone. I hope to post more footage from this mill soon!

Wow, didn't even know about this place. Wouldn't mind a full look if you ever get a chance.

It’s a very secluded mill that many seem to overlook. I got some footage of the whole place more recently.
