So many memories here. I watched George Kent and Ritchie at Shangra La. I can honestly say it was some of the best times of my childhood. That place was like a home to me. I was too young to know Richie other than his legend, but George was my hero.
Dang I miss those days! I never missed a modified race At Martinsville back then, and started going there when it was all coupes and coaches! Being from NC, the only place to see modifieds on a weekly basis was at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, but even that far south of Rome, NY, it wasn’t at all unusual to see the 61 & 38 of Evans and Cook in town for the few longer distance races because they paid more points! These were great times, but looking back, it was the beginning of the end for the modifieds that I loved so much! The days of a guy building his own piece from the ground up, and each car being unique, were nearly gone! I miss those cars, and I miss the “old” Martinsville! Great video! Thanks for posting!
Watching Ritchie at Shangri La was awesome as a kid and even better when I crewed on my uncles Late Model as a young man. I got to Drink Beers with Ritchie after the races back then. He is and always will be one of my childhood hero's.
I watched Richie Evans, kent and Jan Leaty at Spencer speedway located in Williamson NY in the 80's. I was young but still Remer watching these boys battle every Friday night.
I was there too. My uncle took me there in 1957 when I was 9. Except for 4 years in the service it was the Friday night place to be. Even took my wife to be on an early date there. Racing really got bad there for a few years but they are now putting on goods shows again. Made every one last year.
Man, this video brings back alot of memories when I was an 10 year old kid!!watched Satch Worley,Al Hill, Paul Radford, Johnny Johnson battle it out on the Historic Quater Mile Bowman Gray stadium!! Man Those were the Days!!!
Some of the best modified hotshoes of the day. Ritchie could flat out wheel that 61. No slouches at all in the top ten. I loved watching these guys back in the day. Even though alot of the cars came from the same shops they were still individually unique enough that they were really thrilling to watch. R.I.P. Ritchie and Maynard.
My brother and I watched these guys at Oswego speedway. Great memories.

Half dirt, half pavement!

I watched them as a kid too. My dad was in Dutch Hoags pit crew, many races against Richie, both sponsored by Gene DeWitt

The Golden Era of Modified Racing! So fortunate to grow up during this time and sit in the trees at Shangri La Speedway
My dad used to take us to Shangri La regularly and remember guys sitting in the trees....great times !!
Being from central NY Ritchie Evens was the man
Never knew how close Jimmy Spencer was to Ritchie. Stories from the road priceless 😂
I have watched this race so many times…all I can say this man could drive period.. i wished I could have seen him race in person.
Loved watching Richie clean house every single Sunday night at Utica Rome speedway
Well that was fun to watch. Much better because I didn't know who would win. Too bad no winner's interview though.

A Modified race in the 80s that Geoff Bodine didn’t win?
He didn't win a lot of them
@@richardcollejr.5121
He sure won a ton of them.
