He wasn't going to step down willingly. He thought his success had bought him some down years but the Cowboys had been in a decline for years. Unfortunately, as a Packers fan, I find you argument hard to align with because they were so dominant in the early 90s. They were not winning any more Super Bowls with Landry. Favre and the Packers were denied three years in a row to Jimmy Johnson's team twice in Divisional and once in the NFC Championship. Who knows what would have happened in 96 and 97 had Jerry and Jimmy not feuded. Bottom line is the move made you a powerhouse, mostly due to Jimmy's brilliance and a sweet trade. Jerry's issue has always been personal relationships. He picks fights and favorites and needs to be so involved that he let a HOF coach walk. He probably should have been more graceful with Landry but Tom wasn't leaving willingly. I at least respected that he told Landry even when the old owner offered to fire him before selling off the team to Jerry. Jones made it a point to say it himself which I at least respect.
@Matt Jones I believe Irving was drafted by Jimmy Johnson and why would you turn down three quaranteed Super Bowls for the "possibility" of winning with Landry who went 7-9, 7-8, and 3-13 in his last 3 years?
It didn't sit well with a lot of people. Now Jerry Jones is nothing but an old man and a loser, and I doubt very seriously that this jerk will live long enough to see his Cowboys win another Super Bowl. I can hear him now, "We are so close, we are so very close".

I was young when Tom Landry was fired and I remember that day, as an adult looking at that clip, I never realized how proud and poised man he was. There are few men like Coach Landry.
I have never been a fan of the Cowboys because I'm an Eagles fan! Lol! I do have the utmost respect for Coach Landry who was one of the greatest coaches of all time and WW2 veteran.
The CNN/ESPN reporter did an excellent job on reporting the facts of the matter, and respecting the totality of what Tom Landry meant to the team, Dallas and Texas. Nothing lasts forever.
I remember when Landry was in command, that the Cowboys acted as a team. No player was no more important then any other player. That on break from huddle, the team went to the line together as a team then simultaneously getting into position, just like a machine. I did not like the Cowboys back in the day, because they beat my Broncos in the Super Bowl, but by God I respected the Cowboys and Tom Landry. They don’t make them like that anymore.
It was a sad ending and it did not have to go down that way. The demise of the Cowboys near the end of Tom Landry’s tenure was not his fault. Dallas kept drafting for positions instead of talent, and there was very little to no talent at the positions they were seeking to fill those voids with. Some great talented players slipped past them, which proves the point that in draft day, teams should go after the most talented player available instead of a position the team has a weakness in.
As a Steeler fan since 72 Coach Landry and those incredible teams he assembled were always a top tier adversary. A class act on the field and off the field.
For those who weren't around when Schramm was there you had hear about Schramm in every game you watched even when it was two different teams. And Schramm was in the newspapers everyday. Sometimes all through a game they would talk Schramm. Then when Schramm died he didn't fade quick.
I was a lifelong Dallas cowboy fan until that day when Tom Landry was fired I was fired there's still some emotion for the cowboys but I don't have the same passion I had back then he was a good god-fearing man with a good heart and love for people and I'm a true believer yeah they won the super bowls but lately it's been a curse of Landry and it's going to stay with them like they say in the movie sandlot forever! Forever!
There was no reason to let Bill go. All teams go through a cycle of ups and downs, someone needs to tell Mr. Kraft that you can't have it all every year.
@rog9601 honestly man I get it because of the horrible devlopment of mac jones and the throwing used parts to the offense and full top dollar to the defense, the last couple years it was time to move on, but it still hurts cause he helped us win 6 superbowls
Tom Landry was a class act all by himself! He always look so debonair on the sidelines, with his suit, tie, and fedora! Coach Landry made the Dallas Cowboys America's team!
As a Bears fan with the utmost respect for Tom Landry, it really pisses me off how he and Tex were douched off like that. And how in the hell is Steve Pelleur still alive? I still have a concussion from watching that hit we put on him. He has to be made of steel.
I remember that hit. Pelluer became a pancake with tapioca pudding for brains. He became an instant casualty once Aikman was drafted, a nothing backup for two nothing teams.
@@lakebay972 well he was pretty well a nothing QB when he played for Dallas as well. Dallas was still competitive as a team when Danny White was healthy but Danny was never truly healthy again after the Giants broke his wrist a few years before Coach Landry retired.

I remember it like yesterday…Jone’s made numerous classless comments leading up to the purchase/close about firing Coach Landry. He bought the team so its his call…What should’ve happened was in private say ‘look ..I’m making a change…you make the announcement .. You retire from the sidelines and come into the office ’ . He’d been a great consultant…Anything was better than the way it was handled…Mr. Landry was a true gentleman RIP sir…
HIs football philosophy is still the gold standard in the NFL dude...study up. He won the NFC East in 1985 had 25 straight winning seasons only 3 aging teams at the very end.
I'll admit when Jones fired my childhood hero Tom Landry I disowned the team for a couple of years! Tom Landry was a man of class, strength, composure, and intellect. He played a huge part in building the mystique of that incredible franchise. The COWBOYS of today are still riding his coattails as a result!
Everyone was so moved by the passing of Coach Landry and sooooo many showed up for his funeral. I'm not sure the same will be said for JJ when he passes.
He is the class of the Dallas Cowboys like coach Ditka said who played for Landry after the coach traded for him towards the end of his career. Landry still believed in him and won the championship. After Ditka was finished Landry gave him a coaching job. I love the DC and I hope they find tremendous success because it all traces itself back to him. No Dallas Cowboy is bigger than Landry he is the biggest of them all.
A true class act. 2 SB championships, 5 SB appearances, numerous playoff and championship games, The Washington Redskins, the bitter rivals, gave a formal farewell party for Landry at that time. Landry said he never imagined that he would be treated better by the Skins than the Cowboys. Very sad.
My dad and I were diehard fans of Cowboys. When he was fired…my dad, until he died in 1995 never watched another’s Cowboys game. I tried to trick him the following year 1989 without success. He said he rather watch Mexican Novelas than watch the “new Cowboys”. RIP dad & Tom Side note I went to school in Mission,Tx where Tom was born. Jerry did not give him the honor -but Mission gave him Tom Landry stadium,
I can’t LIE this was when I STOP cheering for the Cowboys. Up to this MOMENT the Cowboys was my team in the NFC & the Pittsburgh Steelers Steel Curtain was my favorite it in AFC until they broke up from the 70’s!! I had the Steelers Room Curtains and Dallas Cowboys Vest Jacket it looked like a Bubble Jacket Vest for the Spring & Fall. ON EVERYTHING I LOVE ❤️
People tend to forget: toward his waning years as coach, Tom Landry was receiving death threats for how poorly the team had disintegrated into. People wanted him gone for years, but because of his mystique, nobody within the organization was bold enough to touch him. Jerry Jones was the only one willing to pull the trigger and become the villain, and it wasn't until he did that Tom Landry re-ascended to martyrdom.

Never knew till then that he was as tall as he was, and he did not ride in a cart, he walked ( that's in the summer heat of 100°f +), he NEVER said an unkind word and NO profanity.
He did not smoke and he counted every single stroke because I was watching and he knew I was watching.
What I am saying is I have known very few men like him in my life.
I hope that I can be, at least on a much smaller scale, a man like him.
Thanks for the putting tip, Coach, I still use it!
Lifelong Eagles fan and remember this dark moment in Cowboys history. Jerry Jones showed his true colors then. Tom Landry and Tex Schramm were winners in football and in life.
Oh believe me people here are still pissed off about this.
@@johnmagill3072 lmao.. got that right.
@@texas1526 then won 3 super bowls and ppl forgave winning fixes everything
@@Ciauskhaleesi real football fans know that Jones had nothing to do with the cowboys success in the 90s.
He didnt even have the money to build it, Jimmy did it all. And even he was pushed out. Jones is a true loser.
Jones is still showing his true colors
I was young when Tom Landry was fired and I remember that day, as an adult looking at that clip, I never realized how proud and poised man he was. There are few men like Coach Landry.
excellent sir... I have the landry one but never saw the tex schramm piece thank you for sharing I met Landry twice 100% pure class
You are welcome John. Yes, I was able to meet them both as well !
I have never been a fan of the Cowboys because I'm an Eagles fan! Lol! I do have the utmost respect for Coach Landry who was one of the greatest coaches of all time and WW2 veteran.
Thank you from a Cowboys fan.
Ewwww! Lol!!!
You're correct. Bomber pilot I believe
I can't even get myself to watch this. It was a sad day.
I was just reading about that exact point two nights ago, go after the most talented player available, not necessarily based on position.
they saddest day in real cowboy history my ❤still broken 💔
This was the darkest day of my football life! He was my father figure.
As a Steeler fan since 72 Coach Landry and those incredible teams he assembled were always a top tier adversary. A class act on the field and off the field.
Tom Landry exude confidence in a quiet solid manner.....best dressed Coach ever......Coaches these days look like they work at a car wash!!
I thank you and appreciate your correct advice videos. I loved following GREATEST MOST RESPECTED HEAD COACH Tom Landry in NFL
Landry always was a man of class
For those who weren't around when Schramm was there you had hear about Schramm in every game you watched even when it was two different teams. And Schramm was in the newspapers everyday. Sometimes all through a game they would talk Schramm. Then when Schramm died he didn't fade quick.
Mr. Landry will forever be held in higher regard than Jerry Jones in the hearts of us older Cowboys fans.
this is true
Jerry Jones is not a head coach.
As a Cowboy hater, Coach Landry was a class act.
One of the finest men in the nfl.
A man like this didn't deserve to walk away in this way. He deserved much much better than this after all that he did for such a storied franchise.
Tears are still streaming down my face… 😢
I spoke to an older gentleman recently who says he has not been a Cowboys fan since the day they fired Coach Landry.
That's a Nice 88 Cadillac he drove... I have the same one... great coach ( Legend ) RIP
A great Christian ...Tom, thank you!
He was a real Christian.
I was NEVER a Cowboys fan, but I had respect for Coach Landry. This firing without FANFARE was a DISGRACE.
The day I quit being a cowboys fan. Not mad at letting him go. But the way they went about it. Classless.
Forever!
Im a patriots fan and my friend at work is a cowboys fan and he told me it sucked when they did that, now i know how they feel
Doesn’t get any better than Tom Landry and Joe Gibbs Two of the top Best
As a Bears fan with the utmost respect for Tom Landry, it really pisses me off how he and Tex were douched off like that. And how in the hell is Steve Pelleur still alive? I still have a concussion from watching that hit we put on him. He has to be made of steel.
Yes I remember that NFL films claimed that to be the hit of the year
I remember that hit.
Jerry Jones has fired every Cowboys coach.
Not true at all
@@mastersonic707 Not technically correct, Switzer and Parcells both resigned. However it is true that Jones has made every coaching change in Cowboys history.
and rightfully so
@@lakebay972 how did firing Jimmy work out for you?
@@rolltide9547 Jerry didn't fire that man
That was a vicious hit on #16. I hope he was ok.
Landry is a french canadian origine. Im proud of him. Merci entraîneur Landry!
Tom Landry was CLASS whether in victory or defeat....Never made excuses and the press showed him respect.
I miss the NFL of years past.
I was born in 66 and Dallas was my team. I live in New York and It was tough to get every game. I would lay on the floor 2-3 ft from the TV and when they scored I'd jump up and run around the room. My mom and I still laugh about that. I would cut. Every picture out of the paper. I still have that scrapbook. When Mr. Landry was fired I have never watched a Dallas game since.
To this day, many people have still not forgiven Jerry Jones the way he handled this.
I know at least one who never went to games again.
@rog9601 I assume that's you
Jerry Jones will never wipe that stain off of himself
The very day this happened I have had a very sour taste in my mouth. Since then I do not care for jErry jOnes. Never will. And you know what else? Each time the Cowboys make a huge play or a game-winning score I get a huge smile on my face. And then the cameras go directly to jErry and that huge smile is suddenly wiped right off. My Mother was a Dallas Cowboys fan right up to the firing of Tom. She has never watched football since. She is a West Texas native and I am a Washington native and a Cowboys faithful for 45 years. Most times I find it easy to ignore jOnes but other times my meals do not taste good. That's the sour taste I have for jOnes. So long.
tom revolutionized the game!! utilizing the shotgun more, his flex defense, whether on offense or defense the front line would pop up n down in unison...n tex made some unbelievable draft picks!
I stopped being a Cowboy fan because of this. Never regretted it.
You cheer for the Texans?
No. Stopped following NFL altogether.
Too bad. You missed out on those three Superbowls.
This why, Jerry is going through the stuff they are going through. He deserves it. He did Jimmy the same way
I love tom awesome man
I remember it like yesterday…Jone’s made numerous classless comments leading up to the purchase/close about firing Coach Landry.
This was sad. Looks like the game passed him by. But he’s one of the greatest Cowboys coaches ever.
HIs football philosophy is still the gold standard in the NFL dude...study up. He won the NFC East in 1985 had 25 straight winning seasons only 3 aging teams at the very end.
Tom,,was,, great,,,he,, something else,,we,,love,,him,, never be,, forgot
The 5:00 minute mark might have been the most vicious hit on a Cowboys QB ever.
49ers fan here, and I remember this day clearly and thought Wow that new owner better have a plan.
Coach Landry was a great coach!
I remembered watching this. It was surreal.
I remember this day oh so very well.... It was a dark day for Cowboy fans.....
Tom was a legend in his Time but nothing last forever The Cowboys did not do to bad after Tom back to back super bowls !!!
Everyone was so moved by the passing of Coach Landry and sooooo many showed up for his funeral. I'm not sure the same will be said for JJ when he passes.
JJ is an owner. Hes not a coach Einstein.
And it will always be that way, set in stone forever.
He left football just like he came in...as a Giant. Enjoyed the 'Boys game yesterday. HEH.
A true class act. 2 SB championships, 5 SB appearances, numerous playoff and championship games, The Washington Redskins, the bitter rivals, gave a formal farewell party for Landry at that time. Landry said he never imagined that he would be treated better by the Skins than the Cowboys. Very sad.
Very sad! 😔
My dad and I were diehard fans of Cowboys. When he was fired…my dad, until he died in 1995 never watched another’s Cowboys game. I tried to trick him the following year 1989 without success. He said he rather watch Mexican Novelas than watch the “new Cowboys”. RIP dad & Tom
Side note I went to school in Mission,Tx where Tom was born. Jerry did not give him the honor -but Mission gave him Tom Landry stadium,
Landry was ALWAYS A CLASS ACT !
I wish the Washington Football Team would have hired Landry as an assistant or something after he was fired.
Loved coach Landry he is one of best coaches ever
People tend to forget: toward his waning years as coach, Tom Landry was receiving death threats for how poorly the team had disintegrated into. People wanted him gone for years, but because of his mystique, nobody within the organization was bold enough to touch him. Jerry Jones was the only one willing to pull the trigger and become the villain, and it wasn't until he did that Tom Landry re-ascended to martyrdom.
Coach Landry class Act.
That was the day when I stopped being a true cowboy fan when jerry jones bought the cowboys.
Same here brother...same here
Me too!
