Beforethe transition period ended (01/2021) there was uncertainty on the EU's side about how hard they'd actually be hit. This in turn created a willingness for very close ties, and even to cancel the entire Brexaster should the UK want to do so.
But now 5ye tables have turned, the hit was fairly well contained, although some businesses undoubtedly were hit hard, but gains and benefits emerged on the EU side too.

I used to buy alot of clothes from the UK before. Tried two times after brexit. Instead of a week's shipping I had to pay customs for almost 25% of the worth. Then wait for one month before it got to me. Also, the other time the package got lost at customs. Eventually it got resent after a few months back to the sender in the UK and I opted for a refund.
Today I watch the British shops for inspiration and then search for the same stuff in EU shops, German, Austrian etc. Even though they are about 10€ more expensive it is not worth the hassle with customs to potentially save one or two €.

Small businesses like that don't compete with multinational enterprises and the amount of money in transactions is ... the big players don't look THAT far to the right in numbers. The main thing for the Tories was deregulation of their financial "business" and prevent transparency in terms of corporate ownership, donations, etc. Thatcher's plan was to turn the UK into a big money laundring machine and the EU was a danger to that. So Brexit was the logical consequence. Other aspects are incidential to these big goals. Never mistake what THEY want and need with what they tell to the public to get them on board. See the American revolution ... yeah, for "we, the rich and privileged" but since this doesn't sell, we'll *say* "We, the people" but still *mean* "We, the privileged ..."

I've lived in Portugal for 45 years. The Tories took Britain into the Common Market. Since the formation of the EU we never had problems sending to or receiving goods from the UK. In November 2021 my brother sent me a £20 book which got stuck in Portuguese customs. The bureaucracy of trying to get it out of customs led me to tell them to send the book back. In December, a £16 medal got stuck. It is still in customs 2 months later. What Brexit did was to make Portuguese bureaucracy, which was never smooth, much much worse. I have stopped ordering anything from the UK. Now multiply me by the millions of EU consumers of UK products.

@@germansnowman Well, I am a Spaniard living in China so I understand those trading restrictions very well. Basically, all countries out of the EU are considered foreign markets same as sending/receiving goods from India, the US, China, etc. The Customs of the importing country stop the parcels (everything) and the importer must declare the goods and provide paperwork, wait for Customs officials to handle the process and do a physical inspection if needed and pay the corresponding import duty in order to receive the goods. This is INTERNATIONAL TRADE 1.0. When the UK decided to be OUT of the EU, they became a foreign market for the EU like China, the US, Australia, India, etc so any goods leaving the UK entering the EU or leaving the EU entering the UK will have to follow the same bureaucratic process. Why? well...ask the Brits who voted Brexit.

In order to "unstuck" the gold medal from customs, 1. contact the courier company who informed you the parcel had arrived to make sure the parcel is still stuck in Customs or if it has been returned to origin. 2. To the courier company, provide a copy of your passport and the value of the goods (invoice or online order screenshot if you have it) or declare the goods as GIFT. 3. Wait for Customs clearance to be finished (can take up to 5 days). 4. Pay import duty (23% of the value of the goods including the shipping cost). 5. Wait for the courier company to deliver the parcel to your home address.

@@whatsilviadid3993 So simple. Why didn't I think of that? Yes, life is so much simpler now that the British have taken control of their borders. At the moment, the medal (just for participation - not gold (only £16)) has been released from customs but it still has not arrived. What also did Brexit was to worsen the bureaucracy in other EU countries. There is no way I would order anything from Britain. It's easier to get things from China.

I said this so many times. People kept saying 'we managed fine before we were in the EU' and also 'I want us to go back to the way we were'. But the world has changed. We can't manage we the way we did because that way doesn't work in the world of today. And it's OK wanting to go back to the way you were as long as you realise nobody else is going back. Just you. So you won't find yourself in some imagined paradise of your youth. You just find yourself hopelessly out of step.

@Mr Quagmire every single country has an import tax. The tax is calculated based on the value of the goods adding the shipping cost and the % of tax can vary depending on the importing country. For example, Spain has 21% import tax but Portugal has 23%. This import tax is ONLY applied to countries out of the UE. So when a Spaniard buys an item from Australia, China, India, the US, etc they pay the import tax and follow the import customs clearance process. The same applies when any customer in Australia, China, India, the US buys an item from Spain. These are INTERNATIONAL TRADE RULES, not invented by Spain nor the European Union. The EU united all the countries and basically deleted the Customs borders, so all these years the people in the UK have enjoyed no Customs formalities when buying from or shipping to the EU countries. Brexit gave independence to the UK and brought the Customs borders back because they are NOT an EU country anymore so now the trade with them is treated the same as with China, Australia, India, etc and the Customs formalities must be followed.

Besides this a trend I did notice, even before the single market breakup, was the exchange-rate from my local currency to pounds, set by UK shops, is something out of an early 90´s fever dream. 1£ = 11 DKK !?? Not since the 90's mate.. So besides customs rates I have to pay a 20-30% increase on each £ I spend. It's bonkers!

It's really the only way it's still reasonably to buy stuff from the UK. In any other way, it's really not worth it. Real pity this whole situation.

When the UK was part of the EU, for a small UK business sending goods to EU customers was as easily as sending goods to UK customers. Delivery for EU customers would cost a bit more and delivery would take a bit longer, but that's it. Hence small UK businesses could compete with businesses within the EU because the UK was within the EU free market.
Now with brexit many small UK business who did sell goods to the EU have lost most of their EU sales/customers because of the extra duty and logistical costs. This was a known result of brexit and of no longer being a member of the EU free market.
With these additional costs many small UK businesses can no longer compete with EU businesses. Many EU customers are not willing to pay the costs (from personal experience, of up to 35% more) of receiving goods from the UK when they can buy from a business/country within the EU without the extra costs. For big UK businesses they may have some clever ways of reducing these costs for EU customers, like setting up headquarters/branches in EU countries etc, but this isn't possible for small businesses.
The majority of businesses in the UK are small, it's the backbone of the economy. Think about the small online sellers on ebay, amazon, etsy etc. For many of these small online sellers brexit has basically killed EU orders/sales and opportunities.
You hear about the UK government signing trade deals with this country and that country but these are NOT 'free' trade deals which the UK had with EU countries and hence they do not replace the business lost from being out of the EU free market, and they do not help small businesses.

It's just not worth the hassle for a very small company selling infrequently to the UK.

@Tom UK markets are a lot smaller than EU markets. And that doesn't count what customers in UK are losing. Before they could order products easily from any EU country, but now they can get their products only from UK without customs expenses. That will mean less variety and less competition, which will lead to higher prices and poorer quality. Luckily almost all UK companies, whom products I have ordered, have change their warehouses to another EU country. Only Tesco products aren't available any more, and that is shame, because I did love their gluten free products.

No one talks about the little 'at home' brexit problems. As a vintage/antiques collector/trader selling on online auctions, there are massive losses because people that used to bid competitively are less likely to do so because of the customs charges, same goes for buying, what I'd pay for something I'd like to buy, becomes less because of the additional charges, that's if the seller can be bothered to fill out the extra customs forms. I'm a 'remoaner' that hasn't been affected by the big business of it all but has been affected even if I didn't leave my house ever again!

Your right, the bottom line will naturally effect every sale..money talks right.. but we must remember it's the EU choice to add these fees as it is protect market I actually agree with this even then though I'm a brexitneer. I also didn't have an issue with the fact the British tax paid more into EU then it either got a rebate on or in any form of added value directly. As I also agree that as G7 member we have a moral obligation to help less well delvelop economy's florist, as well a moral undertaking to paid back to some extent what forefathers stole & directly gained considerable wealth from our immoral history.
However, as a brexitneer there was two fundamental reasons why I felt compelled to vote leave or 2.5 reasons 1 unelected & unaccountable governance personnel directing EU citizens lives.. & my fear this would into form of people's Republic, it's my opinion that type of governance has an unhealthy future. It's also hard to resist the natural human instinct that your paying more for same services then your neighbours but because more numerous then I counters my vote into silent. Basically what your agreeing to is you paid the mortgage but I'll come & stay with you for free!
However, for compassionate reasons my main reason for voting leave was I felt the freedom of movement act had & has a massive impacted on our Homelessness situation here in the UK. You will know of course we live in a competitive world & for this very reason an estimated 9 millions EU citizens still living & working here contributed to the numbers of British citizens without a place to call home or a job to go to.. In my city of Southampton we have approximately 2.3k homeless I couldn't allow this to continue to worsen on my watch. So leaving the EU was a tough call but one I do the same today.. regardless of the fact the average person has less opportunity.

They’re a brilliant company - quick, reliable and excellent value. I’ve also bought quite a lot online from GEP in the south of England - another excellent record label!
But I won’t be buying any more from these guys. Now I have to pay substantial import taxes/customs duties (30% to 40% extra in costs) because Britain is a country that does not enjoy membership of the EU now. Just like when I occasionally bought different things from places like the USA and China and then had to pay the import taxes. Learned my lesson there! So, from now on I’ll just do without or shop online from suppliers in Germany, France, Italy, Greece etc etc.
Maybe all you Brits will eventually cop on to the fact that there are real economic and business downsides to Brexit. Maybe you won’t. Maybe it’ll take another generation to see the truth…
