Letting them go to try and survive on their own devices would have been a far more cruel fate. Harsh Winters, starvation, predators like coyotes, foxes, wolves. Remember in the wild, nothing ever dies of old age. Humanely putting down unwanted animals is just the way it is done. Even today, most of our shelters put down unwanted animals.

And how much money do you contribute to your local shelter every year? Do you buy hunting and fishing licenses to support animal programs and regeneration programs throughout your state? Do you know that the lions share of all of the taxes brought in from the sale of firearms and ammunition go to Land Management for the preservation and expansion of desirable animal species?

There are many great animal rescues that would have taken the puppy, had him neutered, given him some professional training and placed him as a pet in a family where he could have been loved and not expected to be a hunting dog. Heartbreaking story.

Glad to see her political career is over. 66% of US households have a dog and won’t tolerate her killing a dog for no reason, other than it was behaving like a dog ! Dogs will chase chickens, dogs will run around and yes dogs need training to become hunting dogs.

Kristi Noem made a really bad decision here. Properly training a 'bird hunting dog' takes TIME... and EFFORT. It requires more than a few weeks, months, or even years to train them well. It's a sport. Athletes spend a great deal of time training & learning how to do their best. Same goes for a dog. Or a horse, etc. She grossly erred, then bragged about it in her autobio, and now is doubling down in defending her bs on the matter. In a recent TIME Magazine article, Noem said "...she told the story about Cricket to show that in politics and life, she was willing to do what was “difficult, messy, and ugly” if it was necessary". But, that WAS NOT necessary. People living in SD (the entire U.S., for that matter) should understand, when she says these things... she means to apply that same sentiment to her voting constituents/ the citizens of SD, as well. By 'her standards'. This is, yet, another warning sign of what to expect from her future agendas.

If the story about the dog being dangerous to the family is true, I can speak from experience. My vet had to put down my sister's year old cocker spaniel because they determined it was mentally schizo from most likely being inbred. Supposedly this is common for the following years after a dog breed wins a dog show. The dog would guard anything dropped onto the floor and attacked me, causing me to need stitches. My sister had a newborn and it was very sad and unfortunate

How could she be so ignorant and cruel? We've had German Shepherds for over 50 years. Our current Shepherd was a handful as a puppy. Plus, he was huge at 6 months. It never occurred to me to shoot him. NOT IN A MILLION YEARS! He was definitely a free spirit. I took him to puppy classes at Pet Smart. Lots of training. He is now 10 years old at 108 lbs. Unusual for a Shepherd. If you want a large breed dog, really think about it. A big percentage of dogs in shelters are large breeds. There is tons of info online to find the perfect family dog. Noem was a complete jerk. What's worse, she tries to defend her actions. A double whammy!

Miss Kristi doesn't seem to understand the outrage. It's not the "tough decision," but the unnecessarily cruel MEANS. She's not living isolated on the frontier. There are veterinians all around those ranches and farms. She could have had a vet peacefully and humanely euthanize the animal. (Or better yet, since the pup was so young, surrender it to a shelter for re-homing).

I am extreme allergic to pet dander, so i don't care even a little about pets. Why is there such a big stink over offing one untrainable dog, when many animals are euthanized every single day at shelters all over the country. No one's raising a fuss over that. And what about roadkill, which also happens all over the country every day. You people need to find a better reason to freak out.

Ouch! I'm a South dakotan, and have written several comments in my support of Kristi Noem. I understand where this is coming from, I'm 68 years old and retired now, but I remember my beloved grandfather training hunting dogs when I was a very young boy. I remember one story in particular, where he talked about drowning several puppies who were simply not smart enough to become hunting/work dogs. The feeling at the time was that a dog who couldn't be trained, who couldn't do what was required, was worthless and needed to be put down. I get this, but I'm not sure I agree with it, and it certainly is a bad look for my favorite Governor.
It's NOT okay to drown puppies - it's cruel and barbaric.

@@ABrown-th1ho no, not at all, it's just the way it used to be in the country in those days. Everyone had to pull their own weight, even dogs. There wasn't money to spend on a dog that couldn't be trained. In those days, there weren't any animal shelters or places for unwanted dogs to go, the farms and ranches all had more strays than they knew what to do with. We need to remember that even today, unwanted dogs end up being put down in most of our shelters.

The dog was ethically dispatched for being a chicken killing, people biting dog. It happens. Get over it. City people have a different way of doing things than on the farm.
I live on a farm east of the Mississippi River. When my Australian shepherd picked up a neighbor's chicken, I was surprised, shocked and grateful that the chicken was okay, even after several good shakes. Moral of that story: Never again did I let my beloved pet loose. After that, I realized that she was only was doing what comes naturally. She's a predator. Since she's also a family companion, I realize that she cannot be loose near prey. I had to change my lifestyle a little, like pay for fencing and become diligent about using a leash when she's not behind the fence. I also had a biting dog who I had to make a tough decision with. I had him euthanized. No more biting and he was humanely put down by a vet. Yes, all those things cost a little more than bullets do, but those are the different things that people do on farms east of the Mississippi.
