  • My first time ever replacing Brake Drums and Shoes. The job came out great!
    How to replace Drums and Shoes on a 2006 Saturn Vue complete tutorial for beginners.
    This bug forces you to set up Windows 10 over and over again, and each time you only get to choose which Windows 10 installation you boot to. You’re taken to a blank desktop that does absolutely nothing.

    Nice video, I'm a retired mechanic and have lots of experience with drum brakes. Pro-tip, don't install new parts before cleaning, and use high-temp brake parts lube on contact pads. Thanks for making this video CJ, great presentation.

    You should also grease the 6 contact points after you have sanded them. Before installing the new shoes

    Excellent video, very clear well lit, good audio. No annoying music. Parts are displayed and explained. Safety is shown by jack stand in place. My dad taught me how to change brakes when I was about 14 I guess. I really enjoyed watching and the re-education of changing drum style brakes. I am contemplating converting over to disc brakes as a summer project. Well done on this video.

      Thank you. I try my best to be safe and make a video that can help other hard working individuals like myself safe a few bucks $. I wouldn't mind converting my Saturn over to Disc brakes myself as I'm not a huge fan of the Drum brakes. But m\the work I did is still holding up great. No issues with my Brake job.     Nice work- Thanks! I think the funky end on the brake tool can be used to compress the retaining springs. Nice refresher before tearing into the project.

    Thanks CJ tackling this myself...my Cadillac has pads in the rear pretty simple...My girlfriends Saturn Vue took the rear wheel off no pads all new to me appreciate your video Thanks..

    Great video , just for future reference when doing drum brakes there's 3 mating surfaces on each brake shoe that meets the rear backing plate that need to be greases to prevent any noises but other then that great job

      Everyday CJ Sir, would you know if this procedure is the same for an 04' Vue? I have worked on my own vehicles since age 13, I'm 53 yo. now and purchased one of these "things" last August out of desperation. I find them one of the oddest vehicles that I've had the displeasure of fooling with!
      Mine is going to have front and rears done asap this spring, as they are sticking and pull to one side. Also, it's a 5 speed and needs the emergency brake cable replaced. (Was wondering whether you had any encounters with that, as well.) Bought the truck from a local scheister "mechanic" that I'd known for a couple yrs, thought we were pretty tight, then got royally screwed. Typical salesman! Lol!
      I bought the truck due to it not having a single spot of rust on it, and interior was acceptable. Looked really sharp with the huge Uniroyal tires, etc. Reason for no rust is because they are made of plastic! Only the front hood, back door, and half of the top are made of steel. I didn't know that, so I made a bad buy, and am frustrated with it. It's sharp, but plastic!
      I'd appreciate your experience w/the brakes, front as welll as rears. I'd be more than happy to share my expeiences trying to get it all straightened out this Spring.

    *Protip:* Instead of trying to muscle that spring on leave your front shoe off and hook the spring on both shoes.
    Then it takes very little effort hook the bottom followed by the top of the shoe on.

    My 07 Vue 4 cylinder has 164,000 on it. You seem to get your money worth out of them!

    Great video- definitely will use this. But at 14:30 you unscrew something, grease it and put it back together, but I don't see what it is, where it goes.

      That is actually called the Brake Drum Self Adjuster and you can see the kit here. www.autozone.com/brakes-and-traction-control/brake-drum-self-adjusting-kit-rear/duralast-brake-drum-self-adjusting-kit-rear/976263_7293_6211
      It's hard to describe but it sort of just sits in between the other parts and adjusts the tension accordingly as the drum shoes wear out naturally. It'll make more sense when you see it on your car once you dismantle everything. Just take good pictures of everything and do one side at a time so you can always reference the other side if needed. I had never done this job before i ventured out to do mine as well so i'm no expert.
      I hope this helps. Again, once you see it in person, you will understand how it all fits together. It basically can only go together one way.

      Make it easier to install, but you can do it with needle nose pliers

    Dude. At 15:43 your holding that thing. Then poof its in and your puting the spring on. Im lost. Needed you to zoom in on it in place. Im watching this video because i didnt take pictures first 😔. But still very helpful.

      In the 90s I took High School auto shop, and my shop teacher told us to keep Polaroid cameras around so that we could take photos of drum brake systems before taking them apart so that we know exactly how to hook them up before putting them back on. Today's technology makes this so much easier. ALWAYS TAKE PHOTOS!

      Sorry. I did my best while filming myself. It’s hard to do. Being a novice mechanic I did my best and taking pictures seemed like the best way to go. Can you possibly take pics of the other side of your vehicle or did you remove both sides already?

      No i didnt. I can make a video. I actually did the bearing. But ended up needing to remove the whole nuckle. Wich i had to remove the e brake line. Wich is connected to the brake shoes. So i took them off also. But will do the other side in a week

      @@CJRichvideo Sorry, I meant 14:29. But nevermind, I found out in another video. Thanks for making yours! I was going to change my drums and shoes out today, but after spending an hour to knock the old drums off (they were rusted on pretty good), I realized afterward that I didn't need to replace anything. I had been hearing some rubbing when I break, but the current drums and shoes are just fine.

    Frustrating. I had to use PB blaster and a hammer to get the drum off. I also went through an entire can of brake cleaner. Six beers later I managed to complete all the brakes. Drum brakes are dumb design.

    Notice o'rilley ad on here. Word of advice. Never buy brakes there. They told me that because my pads wore out (in 6 months) it voided the lifetime warranty. If they don't warranty wear then what? I'll never buy anything there again. Warranty is worthless.

    Belatedly came across this after fighting for months trying to figure out how the drum brake hardware was supposed to line up on my L-Series nightmare (2002).... Turns out the S-series is NOT a good model, and the Vue is far better. (especially on the positioning of the parking brake plate -- duh! The gm provided diagrams are MISERABLY vague on key spots -- as is, surprisingly your glossing over two key issues: 1. the positioning of the adjuster (at min 15:45 -- you must line up both notches, and that's VERY tricky on the front side shoe, as you can't see it behind the parking brake plate) and 2. the positioning of that final adjuster bracket and those last two springs -- nightmare that needs precision. Get it wrong, and they'll be falling off. Glad it turned out "great" for you, though those who watch this could easily have a different result, unless they find detailed diagrams or an even better video. ps, next time you do rear drums, consider changing out the wheel cylinder on each side. (They're cheap, and likely to leak -- and unlikely to last that much longer, given this is a gm.)

      typo -- the positioning of the adjuster is tricky (devilish) on the trailing -- or "back" side.... If a newbie doesn't know to feel for it, and if Chilton or other manuals are as bad as they were with the L-series, one might know why that slot is so critical -- yah, grrrrr..... ) Again, except for the little devils I mentioned, this indeed is a great video, thanks. (and wish I'd seen it earlier)

    I don't recommend soaking your new shoe in dirty brake cleaner.
