    Their eye contact. The syncing. The small experiments, errors and roll backs. The camera angles. The space. The lighting. Simply humbly amazing.

    The majority of the negative commenters obviously didn't even give the music a chance.
    If you listen to it all the way through, it's a journey. It's not about doing a million things "with all that gear" in the first 10 seconds. It's about restraint. This is MINIMAL. And Minilogue are at the top of the game. If you don't like it, ok, cool, do it better or move on.
    And it's not even very much gear, lol.
    Btw, I watch this all the time. Love it. Thanks for making it and sharing, Ableton!

    This is how a hardware/dawless set is supposed to go. I don’t know if most people understand just how hard it is to improvise like this and still make it musical. I wish these guys were still making music.

    This is awesome. These guys are utilising incredible equipment that will have inspired them there whole lives as musicians. They are diving in and adjusting parameters in a way that can't be achieved on VSTs. The subtle noise, feedback and effects that actually make up a lot the volume in this piece combine wonderfully. These guys aren't making bags of money from their music, they're not trying to impress you with their musical ability... they're doing it because they love it and they want to create something of their own. I for one can definitely feel pride and passion for what they're doing in their stuff and don't care if it could be achieved on a DAW with a little leg work.

    ...the timing of the hi hat in the 7th minute followed by the synth work on the SH-101, was a joy to watch, along with the rest of the material of course.
    For those who can't appreciate it, don't judge things you don't understand so harshly. To the untrained ear, sure it may sound simple, and you're probably thinking ''all that equipment to make this?!'
    Well, this is their setup. Whether every bit of equipment is being used or not, it's their space to escape and jam..welcome to their humble abode.
    Technically yes, you could do everything these guys are doing using software like Fruity Loop, Ableton etc..it'll be very 'programmed' nonetheless, with many controllers too I'd imagine, but then that'll take to fun, and the human feel from it...so no where near as fun and cool to play and watch.
    Realise this is pure musicianship, to be able to understand your instruments which is what's sitting there in front of them and play them amazingly. To know each component so well takes a lot of time to master them. Any musician knows and understands the frustrations of playing an instrument, to get good and comfortable with it, so I'm not gonna bother counting how many components are used in this setup, and frankly I couldn't care...the result is amazing. Look how comfortable they are jamming, that's when you know they've mastered this art...the timing of the clap at 19.25 was spot on..I'm actually writing this comment whilst listening to it throughout and am enjoying a journey!
    I'm sure at a rave or festival, the crowd would love this!
    So a suggestion, to really appreciate this, sit back, relax..watch and listen, if you're not feeling it, then you're not feeling it...simple. If you think you can do better, you're more than welcome to step up to the plate and go for it, good luck to ya...
    Minilogue = Masters at work.

    I think alot of people that is saying "They don't need that gear to make that sound" are missing the point. And actually some gear is needed to make certain sounds. Watch their setup video and understand that some sounds actually are analog. And everyone KNOWS that you don't need gear to make music on a computer. But everyone with gear knows that making music with gear and also playing music with gear is SO much more fun. And isn't that what it is about? That you have fun?

    • @NoNameJohnson-wc4pm
      @NoNameJohnson-wc4pm 9 років тому +4

      LCGdude Exactly, I find it quite funny cause my friends call me stupid for switching from daw's to using only analog and outboard gear but I find it 10 times more fun then using a computer.

    • @LCGdude
      @LCGdude 9 років тому

      Haha Im also 18 and enjoy hardware alot more. Do you own any synths/hardware? I'd love to hear new music if you make any! Do you live in europe?

    • @NoNameJohnson-wc4pm
      @NoNameJohnson-wc4pm 9 років тому

      I've been working on a new setup lately which so far consists of an Akai s5000, s950, two turntables, and an old Korg ES1. I make a lot of music and it's pretty much all I do. I just made a new Soundcloud the other day if you'd like to take a listen to some of my tracks xP soundcloud.com/betanumberone
      and no I live in Boston

    • @LCGdude
      @LCGdude 9 років тому

      Nice! I also make music but in a slow rate. My live set isn't complete but I'm getting there and always record in a "live" way and then go in and add/remove bits after. I have the Volca Beats and Bass and a Korg Poly-800 + field samples and drum samples from some drummachines that are faar to expensive. (909 etc). Going to add a mixer this year and mabye another synth or 2. Just need to get my midi signal flow straight and then I will be able to sequence it all from Ableton with my launchpad and APC 40 rather than having expensive hardware sequencers. More fun synths instead ;) Also I'll add my turntables to mix in tracks etc.

    • @NoNameJohnson-wc4pm
      @NoNameJohnson-wc4pm 9 років тому

      That's awesome, I like to make music live as well because it seems to give a more natural feel plus I like jamming while I'm making music. I also use a lot of drum samples and kits because drum machines like the TR-808 and 909 are crazy expensive! In my setup I connect the outputs from my S950 and s5000 into my audio interface and connect them both to a midisport so I can control them both in Ableton.

    Wow. I absolutely enjoyed every second of this. Beautiful session. But reading some of the comments really surprised me (well, maybe not actually). I can totally understand how it might not be everyones cup of tea given the loopy, progressing nature of the music, but bashing these guys for being boring, untallented or even comparing them to the soulless "muzac" from How it's made is to me so utterly ignorant. Making analogue gear like this sync up and work so fantastic together requires skills, dediction and experience. These guys have been doing their stuff since the 90s. Quite sure Korg wouldn't have named their Minilogue synthesizer after them if they weren't deeply respectable artists within their scene.

      Korg naming gear after them is ridiculous. Are they great? No. Are they bad? No. Are they legends with gearmakers running after them to name shit after them? Fucking never. Haters gonna hate, but your talking shit is just as brainless.

    • @yourhighness88
      @yourhighness88 8 років тому +20

      I can't seem to find the bit in my comment where i call them legends being run down by gear makers naming shit after them. The rest of the words around that blatant statement in your comment are just your opinion. How's that for brainless, hmm?

      so when you hear a song do you immediately try to look and see what the gear they used and the difficulty of learning it along with hooking it all up together or do you listen to the song?

  • @rodzeroher
    @rodzeroher 9 років тому +74

    Seriously can't get that people point out so much how much gear they have (by the way it isnt even that much and they probably got all that analog gear at the end of the 90's when it was quite cheap). These guys have been doing this for a long time, and have developed different styles in trance and techno. They have been quite succesfull and toured the world. They have pretty much earned their gear working their ass off. Can't believe people being so jealous. And if you are better go and make your self a name and tour the world as this guys.

    • @flipteezy
      @flipteezy 7 років тому +2

      i admire how much gear they have sync'd together. i think it's awesome. i just think their output or what they created here is not impressive. but that's just my opinion. if people have had an epiphany from this song then cool.

    • @thedanimcgoo
      @thedanimcgoo 7 років тому +1

      ^ PSA: Some one doesn't like a song on the internet. Feels it's important enough that others know this. Tries to justify commenting by linking it to the amount of gear they have.

    • @johnl5684

      +J Costello My comments were regarding their presentation and overly exaggerated movements like all the modern "DJs" do...I've been playing synths since the late 70s as a child so I'd say I know a little something about that. My dj comment concerns all these laptop 'djs' that couldn't beat mix two records (let alone 3) if their lives depended on it. Lest any real DJ be offended ;)

    • @Fleischmahn
      @Fleischmahn 8 років тому

      +John L I can't really hear any difference in exaggerated knob twists versus unexaggerated ones, can you?
      And I don't think these guys count as the laptop DJs you are referring to, those would be even younger, here we see atleast an 808/101 etc. However, that's alooot of instruments for such a minimal and insignificant set.

    I started as a guitarist. At some point thought this kind of thing was odd and was for dumb people. Now I realize that it could be the opposite. I'm proud to say that I'm taking steps to get here. This is great work and I hope that I can communicate with these guys some day about the many things going on here.

      +John Doe Yep, fucking doucher millennials. Just like all these modern "DJs" (and I use that term loosely - probably can't mix vinyl to save their lives)...every little move of a knob is over-exaggerated and done with such a purposeful move. Fucktards.

    • @JohnDoe-jz7bj
      @JohnDoe-jz7bj 8 років тому +1

      +John L Everything you say is right - e.g. moving knobs in an exaggerated fasion - but it's just that kind of music, ambient/evolving etc.. I listen to it when I want to chill and thus it's good that there isn't any abrupt moves. But yeah, if you judge from the aspect of technique and execution, then it certainly looks kind of dumb. Though I'm sure it is intentional and that in fact they know what they're doing.
