Yup, there are some outlets with really bad qc. The chickens taste overcook/overmarinated, with that distinct powdery fall apart texture. They do have a supposedly elevated outlet along north bridge road. So do check that out!
Hello!!! I love how you break down the food and the components they're suppose to live up to like how lemak the rice is and how sambal should be both sweet and spicy. I don't usually like nasi lemak cause you can't easily find a good one in Singapore HOWEVER I've tried this plate at bukit batok blk 217 and imo, its the only good nasi lemak I've had thus far (though I'd like to try your pak mandor rec hehe). I'd love to see you try it and break down the components based on your standards. P.s. the place opens on Wed-Sun from 6am (i think) to 2pm. I always enjoy it as a weekend brunch so ya hehehe
This is an interesting watch for me cuz i just ate at the non michelin star outlet at yck. Perhaps it's due to the different location but i didnt have any complain with the rice. Just that the portion was small, or that i was really hungry, cuz i ordered another plate because i wasn't full after the first. It's my first time watching you rate a stall ive eaten before, so that was new. And also, i regret not recommending you to try the nasi lemak in JB, the chain is called "The Toast". Absolutely top tier nasi lemak. Sambal is so sweet with huge chunks of caramelized onion, i think? The boneless chicken is so addictive, and the rice is so fragrant. I have no doubt that nasi lemak beats every nasi lemak in Singapore. Also, wish all the best for you Alderic🙂
I talked with my parents about nasi uduk and lemak because the topic somehow came up and I mentioned how much you liked our kampung chicken and my mother insisted that there's no way that they are selling genuine kampung chicken in any kind of resto/food stall even in indo because of how much they cost now. She insists that it is most likely a cross breed that tastes similar but there is no way it's a pure bred ayam kampung. Personally I'm never that fussy about my chicken other than being able to tell what's negri and what's (fake) kampung, since I don't cook, so I don't know. Anyone care to expound?
interesting. the place that I went to, ayam goreng mat lengket, seems to be quite proud of their chickens though according to my research. even if it's crossbred, I can tell you it's miles ahead of what we have here in Singapore.
I'm indonesian. Born and grew in jakarta. While kampong chicken are very rare, but there are still a few establishment that uses kampong chicken. And yes, some place thought that kamlong chicken are too pricey so they switched to other breed of chicken such as what we call "ayam kalasan pejantan". You might think of it as a mix between kampong chicken and broiler chicken, and they only use the male chicken only since the male chicken has more chicken flavour and the meat has more bite, almost as much as kampong chicken. Hope it helps 😊
Is the broken rice because of it being overcooked? I've also had other nasi lemaks with the same issue but were not really overcooked (i.e. not mushy), and I'm wondering if its rice/grain quality instead
actually I am interested to know why was places like Boon Lay, Changi Village and Adam Road missed? Is it because their ratings on Google has been bad? Selera Rasa may be good to try?
Hi Alderic, I'm pretty impressed that you use your hands to eat your nasi lemak XD But I can see what you and many others tend to struggle with, the small nitty gritty details to maximise the use of the hand (and the fingers) when eating. You would be better off doing this: 1. make a bowl with your fingers (except your thumb). that means, do not let your fingers separate from one another when you have rice in your hands. 2. push the rice into your mouth with your thumb. not put your thumb into your mouth. this is the number one reason why your full scoop doesn't get into your mouth. Hope it helps!
I had to say, I was curious about this since it was near my work place. I dont know about other timing, but the weekday lunch standard is disappointing. Nasi lemak rice is dry and hardened (maybe from cooking in the pot for too long, or maybe because my rice was near the bottom of the pot). The rice isnt lemak as well. The portion of rice is too small. Chicken wing had nothing to write home about (maybe it was my own fault for getting the fried chicken wing and not getting the ayam taliwang).
pls try the fried chicken wings from this stall if you return! IMO better than the grilled chicken although its a personal preference. Bumps the rating up for me.
He is the founder of using freshly cooked basmati nasi lemak in S.E. Asia. Now his ex-stall just dish out rice stuck or mushy don’t care. They also never follow his sotong sambal belacan.
Their Taliwang chicken I think it’s so so. But their chicken wings are very nice, I always order double wings set. And they give food delivery riders get 10% discount
Shd have gone to the coconut club instead because that’s got a Bib Gourmand. “Recommended” by michelin guide isnt a thing. The guide writes and reviews about thousands of restaurants. But only less than 10% end up in stars or bib gourmand.
(: but actually point out place that are so bad is also helping isn't it? As for Ayam taliwang I would say maybe the sambal, grill and char overshadowed the taste? I really like their taste the combination of char sambal. Lastly regarding the quality of other branches, I think this is one of the rare franchise that their quality is consistent. If you check the other franchies google map review some have more reviews than the yishun branch at 4.8 stars (300+ review). Having said that after 9% GST those air-con branch price increased quite a bit and I felt that might a bit of shrinkflation with chicken shrinking but thats the one in Canberra. Maybe you can try the one closest to your house to see if their consistency is there!
yeah I realized this only when I was editing the video but their other outlets seem to be doing well too. have to go and ask those people what they didn't like about it.
@@Alderic. who are the "those people"? Maybe is after 9% GST their (other branch?) chicken shrink but don't need to waste time and go ask in person lah. Just go google review and sort by lowest rating. Thought many 1 star reviews (for most eatery) are usually delivery cases, like forgot this thing or that, rather than the taste issue. Or 1 star because service was bad.
Idk about the nasi itself, but I see the cabe ijo looks unappealing. Too many seeds. The ayam sambal looks delicious though. 10/10 would try eating there if I pass by Yishun (which is almost never). Is the Indonesia arc only 1 episode? I was looking forward to seeing you explore Jakarta lol (:
havent finished the video but i went to this place before once and their chicken was dry, rice was meh. nothing special 0 plates for me. edit: ok alderic redeemed them for me, when im back there, i will give them another chance and try the kecap manis one (:
😊 But seriously what was so super bad about it? My love for nasi lemak is such that I'd eat and enjoy even crappy ones. Wah don't tell me it was sour or sth
How about someone taste real nasi lemak? I mean taste real coconut milk rice without anything. So far there is only one in Changi Village and it is not one the famous stalls.
Yup, there are some outlets with really bad qc. The chickens taste overcook/overmarinated, with that distinct powdery fall apart texture. They do have a supposedly elevated outlet along north bridge road. So do check that out!
:) Always excited to see Alderic review places I've eaten at before just to see how my taste stacks up. Looking forward to the next series soon!
omg thank you for trying my recc!!!! love the vids keep it up!
I am so blessed to be near their outlet (not yishun but still) they are one of the best
Is it the one at yck? Me too

thank you for the continuous support!
Wah if you can do an economic rice/noodle for your next series will be great. Combination of cai fan and nasi lemak but cheaper version!

(: these episodes always leave me hungry (even if it is after dinner). Cant wait to see the rest of the stops and final verdict.
:) Thanks Alderic for your dedication to bring us top notch Nasi Lemaks
Agreed that only yishun outlet maintain the standard. And another one at kovan, hit & miss sometime

Wa Alderic come to yishun bojio. The star of nasi lemak ayam taliwang is definitely in the chilli (or the other sauces).
Is the broken rice because of it being overcooked? I've also had other nasi lemaks with the same issue but were not really overcooked (i.e. not mushy), and I'm wondering if its rice/grain quality instead
:) pls go try coconut club, its super goood!
Can you try coconut club?
actually I am interested to know why was places like Boon Lay, Changi Village and Adam Road missed? Is it because their ratings on Google has been bad? Selera Rasa may be good to try?
Actually Ayam Taliwang is from Lombok. Try it there if you have the chance. It's totally next level. Even Mark Wiens is a fan of it
oh you're right! it's even written on their signboard
Hi Alderic, I'm pretty impressed that you use your hands to eat your nasi lemak XD But I can see what you and many others tend to struggle with, the small nitty gritty details to maximise the use of the hand (and the fingers) when eating.

thank you for the tips! somehow, I kinda know this but my hands don't want to cooperate xD
:) Big props to that gentlemanly move!
please try Istanbul"s nasi lemak in Tampines.
Out of curiosity do they make the rice through rice cooker or through pot?
I saw a huge rice cooker
Please do Bak Kut Teh series next . Will be interesting to see how the Malaysian version compares to the Singapore's version
why need to compare since malaysia has the same dish that is called pig stomach soup.. its the same flavor, same pepperyness.
@jonathanchia9167 it's different, the pig's organ soup doesn't have garlic in it and it tastes a bit sour.

also, the real treasure at Yishun Park Hawker centre is Shahana Teh Tarik
Alderic why not try Ponggol Nasi Lemak
Alderic you should try selera rasa nasi lemak
Cannot make it lah the founder passed on.
He is the founder of using freshly cooked basmati nasi lemak in S.E. Asia. Now his ex-stall just dish out rice stuck or mushy don’t care. They also never follow his sotong sambal belacan.

You should try Pangkor Island Nasi Lemak at Bukit Canberra
I think its rly unique for a nasi lemak in sg
whats the place :)
LETS GOO, looking forward to the final winner! :)
Giving Husk Nasi Lemak @ bugis another shout!
Where is punggol nasi lemak?
basic tier 3 food.
(: but actually point out place that are so bad is also helping isn't it? As for Ayam taliwang I would say maybe the sambal, grill and char overshadowed the taste? I really like their taste the combination of char sambal.

try Uptown Nasi Lemak
hope the bad experience didn't discourage you to go to Indonesia again someday Alderic :)
oh I'll be back for sure. The people that I met were the nicest, nicer than people I met in Tokyo.
Idk about the nasi itself, but I see the cabe ijo looks unappealing. Too many seeds. The ayam sambal looks delicious though. 10/10 would try eating there if I pass by Yishun (which is almost never).

(:
Nasi Lemak Taliwang should use better quality rice if not the grains keep breaking into little pieces. They can further improve into greatness
hopefully boon lay power nasi lemak gets featured, nostalgic NTU supper dayz..
Its seriously not worth the taste test. Just wasting his time and tummy space
Totally agree. Nostalgia but not worth
I got the boy-girl reference. Damn, I'm so old.
Okay so this is one of the episodes without the 'GNAWED'. LOLOLOL
nurul delights when
havent finished the video but i went to this place before once and their chicken was dry, rice was meh. nothing special 0 plates for me.
edit: ok alderic redeemed them for me, when im back there, i will give them another chance and try the kecap manis one (:
Coconut club maybe
Are they halal certified by Muis?

The rice is like that because it's 1nd0nesia rice.

But seriously what was so super bad about it? My love for nasi lemak is such that I'd eat and enjoy even crappy ones. Wah don't tell me it was sour or sth
:) I think as a food reviewer, you should put out both the good and the bad places for objectivity, just my 2 cents
:)
