Scale Model B-17 Engine Weathering | Oil & Exhaust Stains Tutorial

- In today's video, we'll take a look at recreating authentic engine oil & fume streaking stains for your next scale model B-17 project! The mighty flying fortress was powered by four supercharged Wright Cyclone R-1820 air-cooled radial engines, and it turns out that those 36 cylinders firing away & working to keep these birds flying tended to make a bit of a mess… In just a few steps, we can mimic those weathering effects to add an extra sense of realism to your war-weary B-17!

I saw one of these flying over Houston, Texas about 15 years ago. The sound was beastial!
Nice as always. Many thanks
Thanks for watching!
G'day Hank, excellent video! It quietly amuses me when I see so many modellers who do builds of old 'warbirds' that look like they've just rolled off the assembly line at Boeing or Lockheed etc., all shiney and new. That's perfectly fine if, perhaps, you're doing a diorama of an aircraft actually coming out of a factory backdrop. No drama here; like as we all say, modellers can do their builds anyway they want.
To me, however, absolutely pristine WW1 or WW2 warbirds look a lot like nice kids' toys; not a representation of historically important weapons systems of yesteryear.
I probably wouldn't go down the 'Spanish' weathering road like you did with your B-17 but I understand you were doing this to make a clear, visual point for your audience.
That incredibly good build was, obviously, of a B-17 that had done way more of its 'shelf life' number of missions over hostile targets. It also shows, in a real, visual sense, how much battle damage a 'Fortress' could take and still get their ship back home.
Cheers, and all the best, Bill H.
Which airbrush pistol do you use? :)
Need to finish my Revell B-17 from 20+ years ago when all I had was a paint brush and testors. Luckily after a couple house moves I still have it all in a box.
Ahh very nice!!
Currently, painting bombed out and burned buildings in Cologne Germany at the moment, but this goes right along with that! very cool, sir!
Like your work a lot. I have an off-topic question. In a box that I had not gone through in 30 years, I found a complete Airfix-72 B-29 Pattern #781 without any instructions. Anyone know where to get a set?
A supercharger video would be great. I've tried and somewhat succeeded on a P-38 and B-24, using different techniques for each. Thanks for the awesome videos!!
Thanks very much!!
Superb! What air brush are using and what pressure level did you set it at? Great tutorial...many thanks
Haven't made an aircraft kit in years now,but watching them is always a pleasure, and stains always help for armour modelling aswell I guess, and well appreciate the work you put in on something so big, wher will you put such a huge model once it is done?🤣
Yes. I would like to see how you paont the Super Chargers, please.
What's with the bubble in your paint cup? My airbrush doesn't do that, unless I'm back flushing when cleaning. Your B-17 looks great and really liked the exhaust staining.
Love to see how you paint the super charger
Looks cool. 🛩
Thanks very much!!
Yeah let's see your weathering on them superchargers
The super charger video would be great. I'm currently attempting to build my first diorama it is of Thorpe Abbotts airbase. Your B-17 and weathering videos have been extremely helpful.
I have a question. This came up when I was making decals for some resin figures. The direction of uniform stripes. I've seen photos where the chevron is pointed up, and some pointed down. Is there a meaning between the two directions?
Hey Hank, i haven’t been a fan for very long but i am now, and I recently bought the A34 Comet from Tamiya because of the assembly video you posted a year ago, and i’m just wondering if you have any plans to follow up with a painting video, or if you have already and I just can’t find it?
Can i see the video (private) of the bf109 in másters of the air? Thanks a lot ☺️
Yes Show the me the supercharger painting . . . . please
all tips on painting this magnificent bird more correctly are most welcome
Supercharged video would be great
Hey Hank what’s the brand of that b-17 and where did you get it?
More tips & trucks video's would be great!
hi i like your videos how do u do that with out a airbrush
Love the weathering idea. I am putting the finishing touches on a “Texas Raders” build. It is a memorial to the crew when she crashed.
I literally needed this video a month ago 😭
