"We're not in control."That's one of the big things that gardening teaches us. Glad that no one's hurt, not a lot of property and garden damage and new ideas are popping up. Stay inspired and motivated!

@Mrs. PH this is exactly true! Control over anything is only an illusion. There is so much to be thankful for. It isn’t that you don’t morn something you love. That is what we do. No loss of life, animals.... the birds were hit pretty harsh. Beauty for ashes.
Aaron definitely “could, might” put Christmas lights on the trees along the lane? I’m loving the silver lining thoughts within the storm clouds that just passed.

I loved your approach and attitude about this tragedy…I’m in Wyoming, we lost a big Blue Spruce that was probably close to 30 years old last September (also to a freak wind storm)! It was a HUGE part of our landscape, but you’re right, it gives us new opportunities and views (some good, some not so). Thank you for all the positivity! Trees don't actually send out long tap roots like we often think they do. The roots are much more surface dwelling, which is ever the more reason to remove any material that came wrapped around the root ball to allow as much root development as possible to anchor the tree!

It is always sad to lose a beloved tree and your glass half full attitude (so soon after losing the tree) is admirable. When planting a few trees this spring I dug up baskets, twine and burlap from trees that had apparently been planted long before we were here. A fertilizer pack planted with one suggested they had been planted in the early 1980s. So after 40 years NONE of that had broken down. I’ve long believed in removing everything from B&B trees but that was illuminating for me to see.

'Now we just have this massive area to create something fun!' Love it! I think that this is the best attitude towards loosing your beautiful blue spruce - it truly was a stunner - especially in your winter garden photos. I can't wait to see what you do with all of those wonderful pinecones - now that you could reach them! Oh my! Since the beloved spruce was not diseased but suffered mostly at the hands of uninformed landscapers who left that metal cage and binding twine, are you able to have Natural Tree add those 'clean' chips to your pile out in the new area to be spread over the powdery soil? I was just thinking that the tree has given you so much joy and pleasure in your garden and could perhaps give one last gift in providing organic matter to enrich the ground out there.

Is the tree company the same one that you get your wood chips from? Aka, will we see the spruce again in the form of chips on your ground?

I loved hearing Laura say "y'all" when she was pulling out the gloves for pine cones. That made this southern girl smile! :)

Last September a strong wind storm came through N. Utah and toppled over a lot of the tall blue spruce in our neighborhood & cemetery causing a power outage for 3 days. So grateful you were kept safe during the storm it was quite strong here too.

Aww man… hate that. We lost a couple HUGE twisted oaks after a hard drought summer. It does hurt…but also gave us the opportunity to plant something new. 👩🏼‍🌾

One of the best parts of this video was seeing you cut the sunflower blooms from the fallen plant and arranging them in a vase for the Hartley!

I know how you feel. Last year we had one of those out of the blue windstorms that took out one of our biggest trees next to our house. Thankfully it missed the house but took out one of our fences.

I genuinely teared up when I saw the big beautiful spruce fall. But that new open view is stunning. It opens it up so much and makes it feel so big and sprawling. As usual, I can’t wait to see what you make of it. I’m sure it will be SO PRETTY.

So glad nobody was hurt. A spruce tree will catch the wind like an umbrella, unlike most tree that allow a good amount of wind to pass through. A view of the Hartley is looking on the bright 🌞 side!

We watched an evergreen tree go down last year on our lawn, it was heartbreaking but like you said it opens up another vision of what we could do in that area. I dug it up in our woods 21 years ago, it grew to be the most beautiful tree I've ever seen! Got it cleaned up and moved on. You are such an inspiration, thank you for sharing your joys and sadness of gardening!

Glad everything else stayed intact! I had a huge branch fall on my she shed a few weeks ago in a quick strong storm here in NY!! I was super bummed!! Thankfully I wasn’t in it as it’s my favorite summer hang out! Also it didn’t crush any of my plants around the shed! Glass half full..👍

That was impressive! Those guys reduced that huge tree to mulch, amazing! Your cleanup was really efficient, I can tell you've done that before. I really like the view without the spruce, now the house is that much more connected to the new property. I can't believe that all happened in a 5 minute storm. The butterfly garden looked so good! It's grown so much! I love seeing what's happening, please keep the videos coming, I start my day with them. Thank you so much!!!

It’s actually surprising that spruce hadn’t already succumbed to the winds before now, after seeing the few lateral roots holding it down. It was bound to happen, so glad it fell when it did, and not later, after you had put in grass and flower gardens. Like you said, Laura, you now have a new creative opportunity. I just love watching you, Aaron and little Benjamin working in your beautiful space. It’s such fun, and very inspirational! God bless.
