Huntington’s disease is a rare genetic disorder that we see every once in a while in the neurology clinic, and may come up in your clinic as well.
When patients ask about Huntington’s disease and cannabis therapy, I often break it down into two different answers. When the Huntington’s patient is dealing with depression, when they’re having motor discomfort as a result of their career, we often suggest THC predominant products. Whereas later in the condition, when the patient is dealing with more of the psychiatric anxiety related issues, we recommend more CBD.
Some investigators have suggested using half and half. We call that one-to-one. It’s a ratio of CBD to THC. And there have been studies with Huntington’s patients using one-to-one preparations, half CBD, half THC. And we have found that those preparations are safe, although not very effective.
When it comes to treating Huntington’s disease with cannabis therapy, my belief is that THC, initially, for motor dysfunction and mood is something worth trying. Whereas later on in the course of the illness, when the psychiatric disease is at its peak, we have to be more careful with THC, since that particular cannabinoid can actually worsen psychiatric symptoms in those individuals.
Thanks for listening. And if you have any particular questions about Huntington’s disease, or other rare neurological conditions, please reach me at the Neurology of Cannabis Clinic. Thank you

I agree, My mom doesn't have movements, but a Psychiatric problem from HTT, and Cannabis did not work when we tried.
I have HD. I don’t have any movement issues. I do have extreme anxiety, depression, lack of focus, obsessive thoughts ect. I have been using cannabis to help me. It does help a lot. It isn’t for everyone. But it helps me focus and stabilize my mood. Not a lot. Just a little bit. Too much will have the opposite effect. If you’re prone to anxiety it’s best to not try under unsupervised conditions. Don’t be afraid to try with a Dr.’s permission. Iy still has the stigma of being a “drug”. It is a drug, but one with no long lasting side effects and safe for almost anyone.
