You make me smile you’re digging around in the soil and you’re talking about the Earth worms and how they’re gonna be happy and they’re gonna be eating and you guys are gonna be eating you just make me happy to watch what you’re doing for the earth worms for the food for you guys it’s just really nice to watch your channel.
Thanks for the honest tell-it-as-it-is video. There are very few UA-camrs that I completely trust, and as a creator myself, I understand the temptation to do smoke-and-mirrors to capture an audience. But you end up doing a huge disservice to the audience who might actually believe the "magic" and get disappointed that they are not seeing the same results. Not fair. Thanks for your straightforward and transparent videos! You are a treasure to the gardening community!
I have noticed some channels with huge potato harvests. They always seemed a bit too perfect to have just been harvested. Thank you for sharing the truth about this.
I grow my sprouted store bought potatos in 5 gallon buckets. BUT... i start them in 3 inches of soil. When the plant breaks the surface, i bury it with just enough to cover it. This is called "hilling". I procede until the bucket is filled. Potatoes will shoot lateral roots up the stem. The bottom ones will be bigger, smaller ones towards the top. To harvest them, i just flip the bucket over in a cement mixing bin and use my hands to find them. That $6 cement bin is great for keeping your soil from going everywhere. Potatoes are sooooo forgiving. I found a couple of healthy plants pop up amongst my greenbean plants. I must have missed a couple of those tiny ones. Here in California...potatoes will grow all year too.
Not all potatoes will hill like that( in fact most grocery store varieties do not do that)
I live in Southern California when is best time to plant potatoes?
I recently used that method and when i harvested about a week ago it did not work 🤷♀️ it was my first time and I was very confused, i got potatoes but only about 5 that were only on the bottom of the container. I have other potatoes growing using different methods, some growers hill some do not and they still produce 🤷♀️😆i am determined to get this potato growing thing down!! "to hill or not to hill.... that is the question" haha 😆🥔 I'm here in zone 10a, central coast Cali
Robbie, I appreciate you and Gary every time I watch a video. Thanks for the transparency. My thoughts are with you guys with all the weather coming through. Take care
THANK YOU.. I'VE PUT A couple of potatoes in my compost pile.. I got a hole lot.. red potatoes..
I, also like to use those buckets of cat litter.
Tons of thanks for being so truthful. I haven't grown potatoes yet, but was planning to and had been binging on how to videos just a couple of months ago. In all those videos, people were getting at least 2 pounds from 1 potato. What they deemed mediocre harvest was easily double to triple what you showed us. I would have been so disappointed with my first potatoes without your guidance.
I just picked up 4 dishpans. The dishpans are better for me with my limited balcony space. I have been using grow bags and I leaning towards phasing them out for dishpans. I am determined to get a decent harvest of zucchini and watermelon this growing season.
Thanks for turning us on to the great dishpan bargain. I know Sterlite is wondering who is washing so many dishes all of a sudden! 😂
Just ordered six from your link! What a bargain. They will be delivered in three days! Thank you, Robbie! Another great idea!!
Ordered my 3 at 1:30 am for "shipping" and they'll be delivered today. 😊
Thanks for the tips sbout the bins amd buying through Walmart. Its such a different world these days.
I was rather shocked by what you stated regarding other channels on UA-cam though, and found your statement of there being "so much" out there that is fake rather careless. Its not that I dont agree in part mind you. As a long time gardener, who grew up harvesting large beautiful potato harvests like the ones you described and called fake it hit me sideways when you said thats a lie. We got lovely large harvests in Idaho and in NW Oregon. As a content creator whose main interest is gardening, I very often see gardeners on here who are getting similar harvests honestly! I have so enjoyed your. Intent, and gotten great tips, and have been following your channel because of the content you provide and your obvious desire to see others succeed in whicjevet situstion they are, but that was not the case today sadly. Case in point, potatoes often snap off and fall away from the rest when being dug, especially larger varieties, and if grown in heavier soil they can do it more frequently for instance. It would be far more helpful tp give several clear examples instead of like you did. I dont normally am not bothered by what people say, but this felt like the reasoning was weak at best. Its how you said what you said.
Gardening is science and an art, not everyone can or will do it the same way, or have the same results. I am at this point more interested in who you found to be lying, and what evidence brought you to that conclusion. I only hope how you presented your judgement of others content wont discourage people from watching honest content creators.
Looking forward to growing my Potatoes this year here in the UK in my 10 & 12 litre buckets.
I use store bought Potatoes that have sprouted.
Done it for the past few years and always get a nice harvest of Potatoes in return.
That amount of potatoes would be perfect for me. I have 3 more dishpans in my cart & yep it’s $2.84 each and free shipping since I have other items totaling a little over $35. Thanks for yet another great growing tip & thanks for keeping things budget friendly!
Thank you Robbie. I just love all your practical ideas.
You are so welcome ❤️ Thank you
There is some one who is copying u. I seen ur cup ideal on there page. U r the better person u did it first. Thk u
I've got to replace some of my totes this year. These look perfect to put in their place.
These work great too 😊
Robbie, I learn SO much from you! ❤❤❤
I appreciate that! Thank you so much ❤️
Thanks Robbie! Walmart must love you!😂
On my recent order, I kept adding more to the order to get free delivery. The total never changed, so I just got 6. When they came, the next day, they did not charge shipping. So maybe because it was local? I don't know, but I sure am glad I finally found these. I got black but would love different colors. I love totes and do grow in them, but they are so heavy, and I wanted something table sized (smaller). Thanks again! Oh, and I had to laugh about the fake tater videos. 😀
Thank you for your valuable information. I love your creativity it shows! I will keep them in honor of your teaching. P.S. I love the 18 Qt bins. I will use them for breeding my Black Soldier Fly Larvae. Nice, thank you.
😮 you are right. Thank you for being honest about gardening. 🎉
HI ROBBIE, I'm getting excited about my husband gardening this year. 😊❤
Lol, I have seen some of those videos, they're crazy.
Oh yes ❤
I think I’d like them more than the totes. I could grow enough for 2, use a lot less soil, plus easier to move around and less overwhelming… now to find out if they have them in Australia. We have Kmart here.. similar I’m thinking
I heart your no nonsense! 💛
Love your videos and you! I always knew you were honest about everything. Never doubted anything you said or showed us. Thank you for twlling us about the potato harvest.
Hi Robbie, I just ordered my dishpans from Walmart, thank you for always help us with your findings.
Loved your garden honesty!
I bought a couple of these pans at Walmart for too much money and then I saw your video so I tried to order online so I put the pans in my online cart and then when I went to checkout it said they were out of stock. So I saw that they cost just a little bit more a Big Lots for $3 and that is where I will buy mine.
I hope u r safe. Looking at the weather u r hving a lot of rain.
Im doing this myself this year. Ithe ones i got is a bit smaller that is 8 quart - 4" deep @ $1.98 ea. from walmart. In these, i have leeks, celery, lettuces, radishes, onions, will be putting strawberries in when they come in. I'm going to get bigger ones for parsnip, peas, beans, raspberry, blueberries. I want to try potatoes.
Last April I harvested almost 4 pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes after planting sprouted store-bought potatoes. I used two 12" containers with old potting soil in them. I fertilized a few times with liquid Miracle Gro. They did indeed fall out as if unattached to roots, and some of them were pretty big.
Cool
omg i was ready to give up on growing potatoes. i used a grow bag and only came up with a few. it was extremely hard to harvest so im going to do the bucket grow. Its going to be 50 degrees here this week in Michigan but its just a tease. can hardly wait to get started on my garden. Keepnupbthe great info.
Same for me. Very little in my grow bag, I had a decent harvest last year in my raised garden. I'm going to try the grow bags again but I'm putting them in a plastic bird food bag . They just dry out too fast otherwise
Sdg , Robbie, you are brilliant,
An employee told me sometimes the item is not in the store & they need to go to their local warehouse to bring the item back for pick-up. The warehouse is fairly close to the store, but they have to have enough things before making the trip.
I signed up for Walmart + ,which is very worth it for us so I frequently opt for "shipping" as no fee and no minimum order. Frequently what they do is send someone to any of the 6 or so super Walmart stores in town and it will be dropped off, usually the same day. The basins will be here later today.
I like to try radishes.
With spring right around the corner, I am trying to plan what I want to grow, where, and how. Potatoes is one of them! This was so informative. I have watched other utubers and wondered how they get so many and so big. Now I know the truth, thanks!
I also put a pitcher in my totes ( I love your idea!), but you don't show any updates on using them for feeding my totes. I only see you putting scraps into your totes. Don't you use pitchers anymore?
Good morning Robbie it's Sunday morning the 5th of febuary my question is I see the little potatoes but I want more potatoes to baked potatoes. I'm used to in the grocery store how do you grow big potates? And lots of them?😊
Silly ?..but those little fellas you harvest can go right from dirt to dinner? You don't have to " cure" em?. Is that true for sweet pototoes?. Is cureing just for long term storage and as far as sweet potoes..they get sweeter if cured? . I know multiple ????. Just don't have room or space and think it's pretty cool to try if you can eat right after plucking from those containers.
Thank you abd always great info.
I made a wicking bed out of two of those over four years and it’s still going strong.
Thank you so much I put it in my cart!
I love your videos ❤❤❤
I love watching your videos and always learn something new
Hi Robbie and Gary!❤
Hi Jackie
Ready for the rain?
Dishpans are a wonderful alternative for smaller spaces! I use a tote for composting and then the dishpans for growing herbs and veggies.
Would you mind doing a refresher on the tulle? I’ve just purchased some to keep rodents from feasting on my more delectable plants. Wasn’t sure if you completely cover the plant or only partially - I’m concerned that the pollinators won’t have access to them fully covered. Thx for the info!!
Thanks for the video. Saved your link to my page so I can order some
Awesome, thank you! 😊
I'd like to know where you put the holes on the black dishpan plant containers and how many for potatoes, onions, and carrots.
There's someone on Next Door who says she has the secret to growing potatoes all year round, but she's not sharing it.
We're in North Central Florida Florida. Grow potatoes year round? -- really?
Thank you.
They can be grown year round. During winters in the Midwest they can be grown inside.
I love your videos.. I love you both.. I want to know how you use your garden produces in the kitchen..❤
We will more on that this year, but we do have a lot of videos up already on that 😊 Thank you
I got some from the dollar tree.
They are a bit small, but they will work to grow many things 😊
Robbie, any issues with the black color vs sun/heat?
I’m going to buy a few from my local Walmart
Thanks
❤
❤️❤️❤️
I just moved back home to Africa after living in America for over 30 years. I'm building my house on the beach on 2 acres. I'm excited about growing my own food. Any ideas and suggestions?
Thank you what kind of tomatoes do you suggest to grow in the sterlite black container
I would go with any type of indeterminate small type of tomato. That will grow good in your area.
Morning Robbie what is the size of your dish pan that you are growing in. I am still enjoying your videos. Anthony from South Africa Western Cape
Hi Anthony! These dishpans are 4 1/2 gallons, (18 quarts) or just over 17 liters. Thanks and you take care 😊
Hey Robbie can watermelon be grown in these. I have a couple of sugar baby starts I need to plant
Keep in mind they’re heavy feeders, maybe one plant in there, if you put two you may have to put a container in the middle like I layer and add more soil later on. Kind of like my zucchini video I just put up.
I order my cat food from WalMart all the time, shipping is free over $35.
Great, thanks for this information ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Robbie can you please give the measurements for the dishpans when you get the chance❤
If you look on the link it has the measurements there, next time a will do that , thanks
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy tks dear. I will have a look. Enjoy your day😍
What qt. Size is your dishpans?
Now I’m worried. NONE of my potatoes were attached to a root. They were all just single potatoes. Maybe because I left them in the ground so long after the leaves were gone? I don’t have a clue. No earthworms, either. 🤔
What is the silver thing you have the dishpans on?
I think you’re looking at a gray label that I make from my tote lids
The other thing is, these three dishpans are sitting on an old grid that came off a refrigerator
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy oh yes the silver mesh. From a refrigerator…thank you. Loving all your information and getting my supplies together.
Robbie - can you grow ginger in these dishpans or are they not tall enough? I’ve noticed that your ginger still seems to be in buckets.
Ginger will be able to grow in them as ginger tends to grow lateral. If it was Tumeric, a deeper vessel would be needed to get a better yield as Tumeric tends to grow deeper.
Thank you. I know that Robbie has mentioned this before, that the ginger spreads instead of tunnels, but thought the ginger roots might still need the depth of a bucket.
Just talk non-stop.
Do you want silence?
