- JD Jones’ .950 JDJ cartridge is a generally described as the largest sporting rifle cartridge ever produced, producing more energy than even the 4-bore cartridges that match it in bore diameter. Only three of these rifles were made, and the original loading was a 2600 grain (168g) cast bullet moving at 2200 fps (670m/s), for a whopping 28,000 foot-pounds of muzzle energy (38kJ). There are some antitank rifles that produce more, but nothing comparable in both energy and bore diameter in the sporting realm.
The rifle is built on a McMillan stock and action, and was originally produced on special order for a customer who wanted a really (really) big rifle that could use cast bullets. The cartridge cases were originally made from 20mm Vulcan cases trimmer down to a (mere) 70mm case length, with custom made lathe-turned cases replacing them when brass Vulcan cases became too difficult to source. The gun itself weighs a bit over 60 pounds, with nearly a third of that in the muzzle brake alone. This example is being sold with a whole bunch of ammunition components, which is a good thing since Jones/SSK stopped making the ammunition several years ago…

I mean it's true, if you don't treat a firearm like this with every precaution you can you probably shouldn't even touch it with the amount of damage it can do on either end of the muzzle.
@@jkalash762 the amount of mass in the gun is more than enough to dampen the recoil to manageable levels. It should be treated like every other firearm.

Sure the way it's designed makes that very hard to do but if you still don't treat a firearm this powerful like it might go off if you're not being careful, well you're just an idiot. I take it you've never seen videos of this thing being shot though because if you're not fully ready for it it's going to knock you on your ass while we're on the subject. Little spoiler for you, one of the guys in the first few videos on yt of it being fired got 2 broken ribs from firing it sitting from the shoulder. So please tell me again how the weight dampens so much of the recoil.
The safety is literally just "don't load until it's time to destroy something"

I once saw a guy shoot a round of 3" 00 buck from a pistol-grip-only 12-gauge, holding it in the same position it would be in with a full stock. He was spitting out blood (though luckily not teeth, it only tore up his lip) for the rest of the day. Light off this thing without holding it right, it'll probably make your shoulder blades touch.

The cartridge needs that much muzzle energy so that the bullet can reach the escape velocity from the gun's own gravity.

The rate of fire for this rifle is once every 12 weeks. That's the time it takes for your shoulder separation to heal ;)

This cartridge wasn’t designed to defeat the armor on the vehicle, it was designed to send the vehicle back where it came from.
Imagine putting an armour piercing rounds in that thing. It would pretty much spread anything in its path unless you have modern tank armour in the way.
It’s the type of thing which would be handy if he wants to shoot a blue whale with. Not that anyone in the right mind would want to do so. I dread to think of the penetration power it’s got in terms of against the building. It’s just a small cannon and I’m surprised that they allowed it to be sold as a sporting weapon.

This big bulky round would probably bounce right off due to the sheer size of the round, you d probably get better results from a 5.7 or a .556

It is worth noting though, that there have been M1's that have taken damage from RPG HEAT rounds, particularly in the rear (no losses though, thankfully). Only the frontal section of the hull has composite armour, as well as the frontal half of the sideskirts.
That armour isn't as absolute as many like to think.

@@phoenixwyvern355 First off, range is completely irrelevant when it comes to shaped charge warheads like the RPG. That's the entire reason shaped charge warheads exist. Second, from the side or top, an Abrams absolutely can be penned by an RPG-7. Finally, .950 caliber is about 23mm, or the same size as some Russian autocannons. If the Russians think it's a sufficient caliber to use against tanks, it's probably pretty sufficient. Of course, you'd need to put a sharp point on it the bullet, but that's hardly any more difficult than just getting one in the first place

I was going to compare the cartridge to the cartridges fired from the Bolters in Warhammer 40K, but the Bolters are actually chambered in a measly .75 caliber, much smaller than this cartridge.

Fun fact, to hit a target with a gun from orbit, you would need to time it right and shoot backwards.
Orbital velocity is 7.8 km/s. With a typical ~1km/s (5.56 rounded up as our reference) kick straight towards earth, you'd just be nudging the orbit from a nice neat circle into an oval shape. But shoot it backwards, and your round would no longer have enough sideways velocity to stay in orbit and would dive in towards the earth and hit somewhere on the far side of the planet from where you fired it.
So this is the weapon you would pull that "mission status: Sick" comic off with...

I had to think this through because it posed an Interesting question: what is the provably WORST gun for home defense? A 22 single shot rifle is at least small and quick to point. A Barrett M82 is at least going to instantly stop whatever it hits. Even a good old fashioned muskat is going to do good damage and won't hurt your ears. No, I wanted to know what the undisputable wont home defense gun in the world is and I have found it.
This is the 950 JDJ Fat Mae. It is a 100 pound, 5 foot long rifle that shoots a one pound sold brass bullet at 2200 FPS it in a non-NFA item anly because the ATF gave it a sporting exemption as a joke as if anybody is going to hunt with this. This round would be overkill for hunting blue whales

Perfect for home intrusion because it gets rid of two main problems. The problems being any wall in front of your barrel, and the intruder's soul.
If you let this thing loose you don’t have a home intrude up at all so as well are you and your neighbours will probably not have a chance to sell your home and it’s time soon because you have a huge hole in it. I suspect you would need modern tank armour To be safe against that round.

Was reading on this and apparently, the recoil energy at the stock is equivalent to the impact of a .357 magnum. So shooting this is kinda like being shot while wearing a level 3a vest.
@@LockenJohny101 not quite locked Johnny, a 30 lbs gun being pushed back won't have the same energy going back as a comparatively lighter bullet being propelled through a tube.

So (recoil energy = 'potential energy' divided by the mass of the firing platform) = (muzzle energy = 'potential energy' divided by the mass of the projectile).
@@ryansabin9098 Actually metamorphicorder is spot on, with a 110 pound rifle, the 950 JDJ has over 200 foot pounds of recoil energy. A lighter rifle, like this one, would have significantly more recoil energy. So the actual kinetic energy of the rifle itself is the same as your average 9mm or 45 acp, at the very least. Definitely don't ever want to shoot it. I don't like surprises.
You are absolutely correct. However, the rifle weighs far more than a bullet. The massive rifle and the average size man are about the same mass, so when the rifle impacts one's body, the velocity of both the person's body and rifle will slow down to one half. This is due to the law of conservation of momentum. Half of the kinetic energy lost during the 'collision' with one's shoulder results in that energy turning into impulse into the shoulder, doing actual damage, and the rest of the recoil energy goes into accelerating one's body. Still though, half of that recoil energy would really hurt, to say the least. Now if that person was say, much heavier than the rifle itself, around 300 pounds, then they would absorb the full impulse of that kinetic energy. So a 140 pound man would be much better off shooting it than a 300 pound man, but this ignores stronger bone structure in the bigger guy. It's very similar to the difference of being hit by a semi truck going only 3mph and being a massive 30 ft giant getting hit by the same truck going the same speed. The giant person is going to get hurt far worse, whereas the light person just goes with the flow. This is the best way I can explain it. The concept also applies to the 'light vs fast' bullet theologies.

I own a few J.D. Jones’s cartridge barrels for my TC Contender (.375 JDJ, 6JDJ) Including an SSK .300 Whisper, more commonly called the .300 AAC Blackout, .300 Fireball or .300-221. I started reloading these back in the early 1990’s. They are some of the most accurate calibers I’ve ever shot. Thank you for the great video post. Best of luck 🍀
