  • Watch demos of thermal expansion and contraction. Metal ball and ring demo shows how solids expand when heated and then contract when they cool. Liquid in a test tube expands up the glass straw when heated similar to how a thermometer works. A balloon on a jar expands and contracts when placed in hot and cool water.
Learn why solids, liquids, and gases expanded and contract by learning about the kinetic energy of the particles. As temperature increases, the particles speed up and gain kinetic energy. This causes them to collied with each other with more force, and therefor push each other farther apart causing expansion. The reverse is true when the substances cool and the particles slow down, losing kinetic energy.
