Family Therapy with Dr. Wong | Rick and Morty | adult swim
Love how they made her a reoccurring character in the show, her guidance is really helping Rick and his family.
All she does is reflect, something they can do themselves if they'd bother to. It's a copout to have her do it so they can blame her if it doesn't work.
@@PowertampaTherapy Is about helping people to build the tools to reflect. It can be tricky for many of us to learn, including myself! 🙂
But it didn’t change Rick fr cuz it was a clone
@@Powertampa that is literally what therapy mean, they help us figuring out what to do or what need to be done by ourself, they don't solve problem for us
I feel like you don't get how therapy works @@Powertampa
Rick’s intelligence may be beyond normal human capabilities, but his emotions are that of a normal human.
"normal" 😂
I think Dr. Wong is as emotionally intelligent as Rick is conventionally intelligent. She almost never makes the wrong call with how she treats her patients.
@@gilfuckingdiamantI mean
They are. He acts just like a miserable drunk, just with a much higher intelligence
He’s intelligent in a very specific way, just like most people are slightly above average in all ways. Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences is a pretty good explanation of why Rick and Wong are respectively the best at what they do.
Rick the smartest man in entire universe was finaly beaten by a mall shrink bummer.
I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out why Dr. Wong got so much hate at the time. It was very refreshing hearing something that wasn't nihilistic or Rick's usual preachiness.
All of the "fans" who see themselves as omnipotent Ricks don't like how she reflects his actions back on him because of how it makes them feel about themselves.

@@michaelwilde4779BINGO
@@michaelwilde4779ooh that's so satisfying to hear actually seeing the words im looking for to describe something im not good at describing
well, this episode got an Emmy so they can choke on it. 😂
People hated this episode when it came out because they said it was preachy but Dr. Wong shattering Rick's ego never ceases to satisfy me immensely.
People were bothered that she is just one of the writers self insert that "totally owned Rick"
Don't get me wrong, I am not attached to Rick & Morty 😅
But can you imagine becoming a writer on a popular show
And you write yourself in, one uping the main character
Sounds like a DM PC
@@OscarLangleySoryu 🤷
Is it an interpretation ?
Or is it exactly what happened ? 😑
@@iantaran2843 aren’t all the characters just an insert by the writers? It’s a character that points out the absurdity of what Rick does and how dysfunctional the family is. That is what a good therapist does. How do you know it was one of the writers that inserted themselves in the story? It could just be another character that’s aware of how insane their family is, just like the audience.
@@iantaran2843 trying to Google this perspective ("Rick and Morty Dr. Wong self-insert") brings you to one Reddit post that discredits it more than proves it.
It really seems like people are jumping to it being a self insert with no basis other than the writer and Dr. Wong both being Asian women...
@@OscarLangleySoryu I feel like some fans of Rick and Morty just don’t like when Rick has his views and/or behavior challenged. They think it’s too contrived even though the entire show is the product of writers.
That therapist owned rick, and for once he understood, even for a brief moment, he's the problem.
I think you missed the point, Slick; Asian Susan Sarandon did not “own” anything. She simply observed what so many others’ have about Rick, only more verbose & self-righteous. The only thing that gave Rick pause was whether or not to verbally spar w/Asian Susan Sarandon after the day he had had. He thought about a typically-colorful Rick-retort, realized he was tired & couldn’t care less, then opted not to engage in what would be yet one more meaningless conversation-or did you forget that “nothing matters” is Rick’s whole shtick? I don’t know why you watch if you’re not gonna pay attention. At the end of the day, Rick could care less that he’s “the problem.” That “brief moment” that you claim was Rick’s epiphany? That was his own self-reassurance of how little he actually cares. I can relate. See how many folks comment on my comment, wait for my reply, & then you will have some understanding of just how little your Betters’ care about your insignificance…✌️
@@jasondwilliams9729hrs in and you haven’t managed to bait any angry responses with your fake sense of superiority. Think it’s time to up your game
1 day later...
@@jasondwilliams972You could have just said Dr. Wong. It’s less letters
Me when:😐
Dr Wong is the strongest character in the rick and morty universe like she actually got The Rick Sanchez to shut up.
Goes to show how evil therapists are. They literally use the same methods as cults to make people more agreeable
Dealing with huge Ego's all day is literally her job
@@TomboTime true especially Rick's but he has at least redeemed himself to an extent in Season 06
@@TomboTimethat's a lie her job it's convincing people to stop eating poop
@@mirraalex1752 that's her other job. Living in a family as screwed up as the Smiths plus Rick is about up there with the desire to eat poop.
I love how Dr. Wong can deal with Rick and Beth and calm, patient, and composed but even she can put up with Jerry’s nonsense.
You mean can’t*, I assume?😅
Dr. Wong was the best side character ever written on this show and I want an entire episode about her. Rick walks into her office and shoots a dude with a ray gun/murders an alien and she's like "Whatever dawg, why are you really here? And also, pay me, don't barge in." 10/10 therapist
Having known an actual therapist who had to deal with people going through psychotic episodes, the good ones really are unflappable when they're in "professional" mode.
The best way to deal with huge ego is exactly that: Ignoring them.
You got your wish. There's an episode named after her in Season 7
Dr Wong is literally the only other character that mattered we didn’t even know mattered
Man I've loved her since her introduction.
Dr Wong is one of the few people who actually matches Rick on an intellectual level & can make him think twice about things. Hope we see more of her in the next season. 💁🏿♂️🙆🏻♀️
She does not match Rick in any way. BUT she is smart and a positive change of perception, which help Rick out of his extremely unhealthy mindset. And that terrifies Rick.
Because she's a self insert of one of the writers 😑
She doesn't exactly match his level only just knows how people really are
@@Dr.HooWhoher emotional intelligence matches rick's cognitive intelligence.
Rick is just emotionally unintelligent.
One of the few people who can tell Rick what he doesn’t want to hear and not die immediately after
I think he likes her. Lol
All the other characters try to fight him on his level (science, tech, strategy, power, etc). Dr Wong just called him out on a human level, which his massive ego and talent often prevents others from recognizing much less using against him. He designed that tirade in hopes she would get offended and try to use hard data to justify her career - instead she just calmly calls him out on how irresponsible and selfish his choices are.
@whitmanmaleman He's not really inferior to her. They're both equals in their respective field of expertise.
Even Reed Richards hits up other experts from time to time.
I love Dr. Wong when she treat Rick like he is just a bad puppy.
3:30 "HEY! NO!"
Rick is a animal
That’s what psychology means, really! The same behaviour training methods applied to dogs can be used effectively on humans! From hermit crabs to husbands, some behavioural principles are the same universally, even for someone like Rick
As a scientist, Rick can't deny sound logic, which is why he has nothing to say here. He does not like it, and he does in the end dismiss it, but he can't deny that everything the therapist said was true in the most clinical sense.
I think Dr. Wong plays a way bigger role in this show than we realize💀
It's so pleasant to hear her talk and how she gives solid advice to help her patients. Susa Sarandon does a great job portraying her
The way they wrote Wong into Rick and his family life is amazing to see, She is a therapist but Rick is the smartest human alive so to him she is just nothing but he seems to realize over episodes that she helps somehow
As Wong said, it’s similar to good hygiene. Its not fun and nobody wants to do it but its what people have to regularly upkeep to suffer less
In a way, Dr. Wong is the antithesis of Rick. She’s not as intelligent enough to turn herself into a pickle, but she has amazing interpersonal and emotional intelligence. She doesn’t take the bait or look mystified at Rick’s inventions. She can call Rick out. He admonishes her and her profession when they first met, but I think he respects her calling him out on some level. I do think it is hilarious that as Rick’s antithesis, they still have commonality in making fun of Jerry.
I'd argue she is as emotionally intelligent as Rick is scientifically intelligent. That's why she can match him so effortlessly.
I absolutely love how Dr.Wong is COMPLETELY unfazed by Rick's chaotic mad scientist life.
"Your enormous mind literally vegetating by your own hand." Genius.
I love ricks look on scene 2:30. Riick knew doctor wong hit the nail on the head.
She has as much wisdom as Rick has intelligence. Love her character
Even though Rick tries to belittle the value of "connecting emotions to words" with his elaborate, colorful, and witty articulations, Dr. Wong sees right through his little charade as a cheap defense mechanism because on some level Rick knows people won't try to challenge him when he races to make himself seem right about something. Dr. Wong is truly a table turn for the show.
I love his relationship with the therapist. He's hurt and suffering on a level that normal people can't perceive and she's basically the truth/cure he needs to recover. He hates feeling the way he do but avoids her like the plauge.
Now he's "in too deep" and "has to" double down on his pride, otherwise he'll prove himself wrong and someone he doesn't respect right. Now he's caught in this wheel of sadness and all he has to do is stop but he thinks it's too late.
2nd paragraph is a perfect description of depression
I love the fact that in future seasons we get to see more of her and her therapy sessions with Rick, Rick will never admit it verbally, but that is his way of saying “she’s good.” And this scene hated by many is the start of it, also he did got better bit by bit.
Love how the latest Dr. Wong episode was basically advice on dealing with trolls
If my family would go to therapy it would be way more awkward than this.
"...that's why it's loaded with voice activated contingencies..."
Oh Rick...never change...😄
Tbh, as a guy going through therapy for the first time in a long while, this is something I come back to watching a lot.
Dr. Wong is absolutely right - We all have a choice, and self-improvement and bettering oneself is just that - It's work. It's hard work, but it's ultimately worth it, I feel, in the longrun.
It's not an adventure, but much like my job as a Dishwasher, it's satisfying to be able to say, "I put in the hard work and things are running as they should."
love how her patience wears out the most with.. jerry LOL
I like that she is completely serious (and correct) every time she speaks
Dr Wong was the first person to make Rick sit down and think to himsef about what he did
"TV gives British people prizes for Baking," is such a hilarious line.
The fact Rick apologized afterwards is hilarious. Got a reality check that clearly stuck with him
Dr. Wong was the only one to actually help Rick
Dr. Wong is an amazing character. I would love to see more from her in next seasons
I think Rick's ego forbids him to accept that someone could potentially understand him. He has turned being a genius without peer as some kind of badge of honour, when it is quite the curse being able to not only see the universe move a certain way, but being able to prove it moves that way, only for everyone else to reject the evidence before them, because theh would rather see the universe move the way they want it to. He wants to believe that he is some kind of confounding factor in creation, that his behaviour is unpredictable, his motives unfathomable, and his reputation associated with the ultimate wild card, and a therapist is probably the only person who could see through it and see the patterns. Dr Wong is one such therapist, and she accomplishes what Rick cannot, connect to people.
One detail people tend to overlook is Rick is the one who taught Summer to get wasted and abuse substances. Season 1 finale. Not even Morty is calling Rick out for that one.
She was actually good at her job
Escape contingency "I need to take a long look at myself" uses the same phrasing as the brainalyzer episode when Diane dies. "I took a long look at myself and I dont think this science thing will pay off"
such a good therapist, also voice actor is fit perfectly.
My mom is a psychologist and was recommended this scene. She was impressed with the therapist's ability to maintain her composure.
I bet it's way harder than it looks on tv/internet/etc.
I love Dr. Wong's character it is so satisfying to see someone finally explain to Rick what is and isn't okay to do as well as explain to other people what Ricks frankly terrible actions mean to be like that episode with Unity. I hope they keep her more in the next season if there is one that is
At 5:25 Rick says: "Smart guns, whitelist human life... And the therapist." meaning Dr Wong isn't human.
*2:12** "The thing about cleaning, repairing, and maintaining is a that it's not an adventure. It's work."*
Wow. I only "watch" Rick and Morty through UA-cam clips (tried the show several times and never got into it) and all I know from the online fanfare is that it's too smart for me. But I absolutely love how straight that entire declaration was delivered and it really hit me as someone who'd most would rather just die instead of putting in the work to sustain a healthy and happy life (or like just get there in the first place), at least if there were an accessible easy and painless method to die.
I love Dr. Wong so much
I feel like in real life.... I deeply need a Therapist like Dr. Wong
The look Beth gives when Dr. Wong asks to Rick why did he lie, is the same look I gave when a teacher asked a bully why did they hit me. A mix of surprise, hurt, and genuine curiosity.
They should be together hahahhaha... Wong and Rick
I love her chatacter so much
she brings everything down to earth, no wacky antics, she is just a very sane human being
I really like Dr Wong because she really knows how to handle Rick Sanchez.
"Whitelist human life... and the therapist."
Dr. Wong isn't human?
One of the few people who got the better of Rick. Who’s not some god or a galactic federation general, but a regular person, an “agent of averageness”.
Rick could have said "No" to coming to therapy, but he lied and turned himself into a pickle. All for his need for adventure, or the thrill of near death. Its because he's afraid to admit that he isnt thrilled by sustaining or maintaining a relationship with his "family."
In the episode wherein the therapist is standing in her destroyed office after the smith/sanchez fly away she says im better than this job, i wonder if its ms wong or ms sarandon speaking
Susan Sarandon's grandson (or son?) is a fan of the show, so she likely is doing it for him. But for what it's worth, she's giving it 100% and that's a testament to her professionalism.
@@Kaboomboo i have enjoyed all of her work. From her roll in the rocky mountain horror show through movies like the client and lets not forget dr wong
Jerry is killing me lol. "All I do is say hey!" - Is this Jerry indestructible?? Nothing hurts him cause all he can do is say hey!?
More of Dr. Wong! We demand.
"I don't discuss my problems I incinerate them" 😂
" i dont discuss my problems, i incinerate them "
Best line
My family literally needs Dr. Wong IMMEDIATELY
Dr.Wong is my favorite character, all of Rick & Morty seems mainly about Rick’s world it’s nice that someone gives him a reality check.
Man i hope dr wong comes back in the next season, even if for a moment 🙏
She’s coming back!
She can't even tolerate Jerry that much, even she knows you gotta treat him like an idiot
Dr. Wong's Greatest Moment at 6:02
Wang deserves a full episode. 😁
The Dr. is Susan Sarandon
4:17 "Not reacting, that really is the kill move?"
Does anyone else think this realization may be what inspired to Rick to actually give Jerry the pillbug mode? I know that Jerry asked for it, but I think this moment is what made Rick understand how useful it could be.
She is my fav character, rick is god level but gets owned everytime he talks to dr wong
I hope Miss Wong finds the right job... the job that allows her to feel happy and fulfilled.
One of the only people who can tell Rick he is wrong and survive
Dr. Wong is one my favorites characters
I love how when Jerry says hey they don't even bother hitting him that hard.
Justin roiland needs Dr Wong
Ya!
I know it’s probably not gonna happen but Rick and Wong actually seem to have a good relationship mix cus there both intelligent in there own ways and it seems they complement each others goals and there wants well and Wong is the only person in the show that Rick starts to understand more and revert his disliking of her
2:45
The way she says that so calmly 💀
I love that they show that counseling works
"TV give British people prizes for baking Jerry"
Not even two grizzly mothers can deliver a beating that savage
Therapist flat out calling Jerry crazy but treating everybody else so passively is so funny
Wong x Rick is endgame, I'm calling it
"I'm better than this job" is a reality for Therapists every where
Rick is intelligent in every department except emotional, and that's where Dr.Wong has him beat.
So Rick install the flame thrower to burn her while admit he's wrong is the activate code? Rick was afraid of her all along
Rick: When I don't like something about the world I change it.
Me: Rick, do you like yourself?
Best scene in the entire series. You can’t change my mind.
When this episode aired it upset a LOT of incels (like animator Skudbutt) who screeched in anger that anyone could one-up their god Rick and bring some kind of sense of emotional normalcy to a cartoon show that let them feel intellectually superior to everyone else.
Smart gun commands implying that the therapist isn't human...
"Im better than this job"
YES lmaoooo
One of my favorite moments of the show.
“We’ve been over this all I do I say hey” lol
An agent of averageness 😭😭
I absolutely LOVE her!!!
Mane this scene really opened my eyes💯
Rick always has something witty to say but his silence after the first therapy session was deafening.
I love that therapist
Susan Sarandon, best choice for dr. Wong character.
Dr. Wong is epic.
Dr. Wong better than her job and better than some intergalactic psychos
The first scene is the scene that made this my favorite episode
What makes her extra awesome is that shes voiced by Susan Sarandon
"I don't discuss problems, i incinerate them."
Hell yeah.
Rick cares, it’s just he’d rather do anything else but follow through. Wong helps him follow through.
