- Our Open Days are intended to give an insight in to Maths at Oxford, whether you are a potential applicant or are just curious. In this talk to an audience of sixth-formers (High School students) and their families, about the Applied Maths that our undergraduates study at Oxford, Dominic Vella uses everyday examples to explain that Applied Mathematics is about looking afresh at the world around you, looking at scientific problems and using mathematical models to solve them.
One way to think about why frequency of pendulum is independent of mass is that objects of different masses fall to earth at the same acceleration (the Galileo's Pisa tower demo).
15:03 The drum shapes have both the same area and perimeter.
That was another great lecture, learnt a lot, Thank You Oxford University.
Curly dt/dx is partial
4:25 engineers be like
@@AmazzingAlyssa15 ik this is 11 months late but he means that engineer professors love saying we’ve already done this before so we don’t need to go over it
ما هي لغتي يا ترا ؟؟؟
هيا .... اخبروني من فهمني ....
sinx = x
*laughs in pure mathematics*
Try to listen more carefully
@@MrPolinesso3 what are you talking about? He said that for small angles, they are approximately the same and then just assumed small angles. That's his joke, and it is based of what he said.
Please, I need someone's help at the University of Oxford to help me how to apply for the Oxford University or the prestigious Oxford University Scholarship
Non linear dynamics is also a branch of physics 😀😀
Physics and maths are two different things. You use math to describe relationships observed in physics. Physics is a natural science and math is a tool used in it.
I'm sitting here trying to figure out why he's explaining these concepts on the HIGHEST of all levels...
cause he is an a shoIe
If you can do Maths at Oxford then you can do Medicine at Hull/ York and will be far more likely to have a well paid job at the end of your course if you chose the latter.
And if you actually like maths? Become a doctor and hate it??
@@portlyoldman No ! Become a Mathematician and count crates for Tesco.
@@dogwithwigwamz.7320 Oh it's possible you're from the US, in the UK they don't have a problem of certain degrees not being employable. My favourite example to tell people is if you want to be a lawyer, you absolutely don't have to get a law degree in the UK to be a lawyer, instead they pay you while they train you.
Not necessarily so. Medicine is quite a different skill set to maths.
Look at the average wages out of uni for maths. U can go into financial and make lots of money if thats what somebody wants. And anyways if someone has a passion for maths, it really doesn't mean they'll b good at medecine, much less have a pasion for that
Is this graduate or undergrad?
yes
This is neither. This is an open day, which is basically a day on which oxford allows high school students to come there and experience what a typical day at the university is like.
Thanks
Why the fuck am I watching this ??🙁
