He was from Buchenland/Bukowina. His Jewish family spoke German at home. He was one of the most popular singers in Germany at this time. A small and shy man.
The tune is a medley which incorporates an old Irish melody called "The Last Rose of Summer" the original lyrics of which were written by Thomas Moore, one of Ireland's great music collectors and lyricists from the early 19th century. Schmidt performs it flawlessly here.
If I'd sung like that I think I might have stood there for for twenty minutes afterwards accepting the applause. He just nips off.... I mean obviously it's a film, but still you know, this is extraordinary singing.
I have felt from the 50s that Joseph Schmidt had the greatest tenor voice ever recorded. This gift gives me more belief in that feeling. The last few notes without a breath is very dramatic. He would been in very good health to produce such an event. This is one i will play often.
Thanks for uploading Joseph Schmidt arias ! I believe he was the best liric tenors ever. It is such a pity he ended his life so youns a 'slave' in a Swiss Camp during WW2.
Fate dealt a terrible hand to Joseph Schmidt, whose life was every bit as tragic as some of the operatic characters he could have played, had he not been so short in stature.

One of the greatest tenors, who died so young and so tragically.

This is not an Italian opera. It is German and written by a German. and the aria is
"Ach so fromm"
Fate dealt a terrible hand to Joseph Schmidt, whose life was every bit as tragic as some of the operatic characters he could have played, had he not been so short in stature.
Could it be Amelita Galli- Curci in white dress front row.
