As soon as you said “the best trilogy ever made” I instantly liked, I always say that lord of the rings is and always will be the most amazing movies ever made.
I agree. I bought the trilogy a while back and watched it after having ready the books. Often, I've been disappointed with film adaptations of books I've read as too many producers make the mistake of straying too far away from the source material. Peter Jackson did a good job of telling the story as it needed to be told in film, while still keeping true to the spirit of the story in the books. My main disappointment between them was the way Lord Denethor was portrayed in the film as a crazy, petty numbskull, when in the books he's actually quite strong and wise, and only falls into madness after he believes both his sons are dead or soon will be and he makes 1 last use of his Palantiri and is finally bested by Sauron. In the books, it's shown he matched wills with Sauron via his Palantir for some time and held his own, only breaking in the end when it seemed is family was ruined. If you haven't read the books yet, I'd highly recommend it, you'll love them as much as you loved the films.
@@frankgrimes7388 You're entitled to your opinion, but I found the movies did a good job of translating the story from a book format to a movie format. That's not the easiest thing in the world to do and they managed it. There were a few things I would have liked to have seen done better but it's not bad. I've seen film adaptations of books that didn't even follow the story from the book, and only shared the title with the book. Clive Cussler's Sahara comes to mind. One thing I'd have loved to see done better in the movies would have been a better portrayal of Denethor II. In the books he's a very intelligent and strong leader, who only breaks after both his sons died within a few months of each other. In the movies, he's a stupid, conniving idiot who does nothing to prepare for the war he knows full well is coming. Other things that would have been nice to see, like the part of their journey through the Old Forest and the meeting of Tom Bombadil, but they only had so many hours to fit the story in so I can understand why things like that had to be dropped. There's a few other things, mostly minor and mostly understandable why they had to do it the way they did. So what's your main reasons for feeling the movies were rubbish?
@@Seriously_Unserious I honestly thought about skipping the Old Forest chapter when I was reading the books because I was so bored. It took me about a year to get through it and I finished the rest of the book in a week or so.
@@AdamFloro I guess we all have different tastes in what we find interesting. I liked the old forest section for the most part. There was plenty of tension with the hobbits trying to navigate the woods and having the trees and brambles re-arranging themselves to keep forcing the hobbits deeper into the Old Forest created a bit of a spooky vibe to the area. What sort of power was forcing them to go the wrong way? That scene for be brought up shades of Mirkwood from The Hobbit.
Fact number 51: The current Queen of Denmark, Margrethe the 2nd, has illustrated the Lord of the rings and the Hobbit books under the name Ingahild Grathmer. Queen of Denmark, Margrethe the 2nd aka Ingahild Grathmer sent Tolkien her interpretations of scenes from The Lord of the Rings in the early ‘70s. The hard-to-impress author absolutely loved them, and was taken with how similar they were to his own sketches.
I feel bad that Christopher Tolkien didn't like the movies. I love the books and I think that Jackson did his upmost and did justice to the books. He opened up the story for a whole new generation, who loving the movies will hopefully go pick up the books and read.
It's unfortunate yea, but at the same time... who cares what he thinks? He's just the son of the great man who wrote the books, he could never have written them himself.
@@dinkywinky2860 Totally agree, who cares what he thinks. LOL he said Jackson made it into an acton movie and the books are literally that with all the battles and everything, I think he was just yelaous of the movies success.
@@dinkywinky2860 Actually he revised, edited, and published many of his father's texts after his death. He even wrote some things himself. He was directly related to the works and his opinion definitely did matter. I do certainly disagree with him, however I can see where he was coming from.
Well there is this one thing in the LOTR movies which I completely dislike and that is how Aragorn obviously is leading on Eowyn even tho he's supposedly commited to Arwen. Moreover in the extended versions. That never happened in any of the books so I fail to see the reasoning behind adding that. Other than that the lotr movies are simply masterpieces and my all time favorites!
@@nenadpopov3601 I'm a Tolkien geek from way back...mid '70's...and my first viewing of the movies I was a little stunned. It was much bloodier than my imagination had made it when reading. However, when I picked up the books again, especially Return of the King, Tolkien describes the enemy catapulting the heads of the Gondorian soldiers back over the walls of Gondor, etc. There's quite a bit graphic in the books. The major flaw in Jackson's depiction is how frail Frodo is. I've been reading the books again this month, and Frodo was pretty badass. And Gimli treated as comic relief also bothers me. But he did an amazing job with the AGE of Middle Earth in the movies. I really appreciated the backgrounds and sets, the costumes. The look of it is just stunning, and of course the development of the characters. Amazing work!
I have a question every time I watch the movie the return of the King and Gandalf flies over Mordor on eagles and picks up Sam and Frodo. I always wonder why Gandalf couldn’t have just dropped him at Mordor to put the ring in the fire.
@@RiFeX2703 I know I wrote this after I listen to the whole thing and they mentioned that the Eagles I meant to do specific things and yes the movie would be short and boring I agree
Many of the surviving characters went there. Sam, Frodo, Bilbo, Legalos, Gimli, Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, ... however Marry did not, nor Pippin, neither did Aragorn or Arwyn. Treebeard also didn't go, in case you were wondering. Might have finally reunited with the entwives if he had. Who knows?
I'm so glad they went with Cate Blanchett to do the intro monologue, she absolutely killed it. I'm sure Ian McKellen would have done really well too, but it's just hard to imagine anyone topping Cate.
The intro was greatly inspired by/stolen from the Wheel of Time books while mixing in lines from other Tolkien characters. Not an exact plagiarism, but the wording is far too close to be unrelated.
I wonder how many people went on to read LOTR and become huge Tolkien fans because of these movies. I believe Christopher Tolkien may have over reacted to the nature of the films.
I've been raised seeing the films, and even if I've finished reading the books only recently, I knew for a long time they were some sort of more simple and "cinematic" ( in the worst sense of the word ) adaptation, made to please a wider public. I mean, they're incredibly good, but they're obviously cutting hardly through the story. That's why I really won't say that would have please Tolkien himself. Though, I don't think they could have done better, and we probably will never have a better adaptation neither since nobody's gonna have the same faith and dedication to put in this project again with more time and budget ( which would be necessary to beat it ). That's the reason I still love the films, despite the fact the books are way better. Jackson did well and brought, it's true, a lot of people to take interest in the books and to get deeper than "simply" watching the movies. + Tolkien would certainly have love the music score. As long as Amazon hasn't ruined the Middle-Earth yet, he must be resting in peace.
I read all the books and when the movies came out so much was left out, I'd say.."wait, what ??" I prefer reading the books before any movie because they really go into depth and detail explaining so much about the characters and their world.
It's tough not to criticize when you read the books before the film but too many people get wrapped up in their image. I enjoyed the movies for what they were but didn't feel they accurately captured the mood of the books. A big part of that was New Zealand, very pretty but not at all middle Earth's forests nor mountains. I'm disappointed that people laud it so much it's unlikely we'll get a movie more like the book, I've been waiting since the cartoons.
Note: The "giga-ring" (the largest of all the prop rings) was also used in the scene up on the mountain where Frodo trips in the snow, drops the ring and Boromir picks it up. Great video, thanks for putting it together!
Here are some more. 1. Christopher Lee not only met JRR Tolkien, but he was actually friends with him. Tolkien told Lee if they ever made a live action version of the Lord of the Rings he wanted him to be in it. 2. JRR Tolkien wrote the books because he believed that Britain had no mythical stories of their own. All the British myths that were around were based on other countries stories. So he decided to write something himself. 3. JRR Tolkien wrote quite a bit of the story to Lord of the Rings whilst he served in the British army during the first world war. He used to keep a notebook which he wrote things in. 4. A lot of people believe JRR Tolkien is British but he was actually born in South Africa 5. JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis used to be friends and help each other with their writing. They had what they called their own book club.Their friendship later soured. 6. Orlando Bloom was a huge fan of a TV show in the UK called Midsummer Murders. It is a detective series. After he did the Lord of the Rings trilogy and after the first film was released, he made it known to the producers he was a fan of the show and would love a part in the show. He got his wish and they put some Lord of the Rings references in the episode. 7. To get the cast to know each other before they started shooting. Peter Jackson arranged for some of the cast members to travel together to New Zealand. Dominic Monaghan was told he would be travelling from the UK with Actor Orlando Bloom. They never met but as soon as Dominic saw Orlando get on the plane he knew it was Orlando and they became great friends on the flight. 8. JRR Tolkien started writing the final book The Silmarillion, but died before he could finish it, so his son finished it.
It was Billy Boyd who travelled with Orlando Bloom to New Zealand, not Monaghan. It was Boyd's 30th birthday the day they traveled, so they celebrated it with a champagne toast once on the flight to LA, and due to the time difference, a second time on the flight from LA to New Zealand. It's a very funny story that Boyd tells in behind the scenes interviews.
Galadriel is one of two elves still alive in Middle-Earth who have seen the light of the trees, the other being Glorfindel. Even though his part in the story has mostly been given to Arwen in the movies so they could have a good female lead actress, Glorfindel still is present in the films, as a silent extra in the background of Elronds council and also during Aragorns coronation. Cirdan the shipwright (also seen in one of the final scenes of Return of the King) is even older than Galadriel, but he never went to Valinor and thus never saw the trees.
@@IREG1895I Cirdan is older than Galadriel but he never crossed the sea and saw the trees. He lived his entire life in Middle Earth until he left on the boat with Frodo and company.

Continuation on Fact 20, Viggo insisted on that for his armor as well, Chainmail made for an adult male weighs something around 15-20lbs, or 7-9 kilos, and he wore that shooting action scenes while wielding a real steel sword weighing probably another 5-6lb, or 2.5~ kilos. If I remember correctly Sean Bean also followed Viggo's example, so the fact about him hiking and climbing the mountains to the shoots is a bit more impressive. Learned that from the staff at Wheta Workshop down in Wellington a couple years back, where fun fact, they have a working Warthog from the planned Halo movie that never went anywhere.
I fear that they are going to push diversity, progressvism, feminism and other cultural marxist elements that are completely out of touch with Tolkien legendarium...

Wonderful job. The more I hear about Viggo Mortensen the more impressed I get. He even slept with his horse to establish trust for the scene where the horse nudges him back to consciousness after his fall in the Two Towers.
i wouldnt think there is any other movie created with such passion, love and perfection. How commited the entire crew was is mind boggling. And the result is probably the best that is every to be seen on a theatre screen. I´d just hope they release more of the shots that were never published in documentatios or making offs
That this trilogy was ever made, let alone turn out to be the masterpiece that it was, was nothing short of a cinematic miracle that we should all be thankful for.
I’ve now watched all of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Extended Editions two times all the way through with my boyfriend and it’s become a wonderful, nerdy tradition for us. I even got him Glamdring (Gandalf’s sword) for his birthday. It’s our favorite movie franchise for good reason, it just can’t be beaten! Incredibly talented cast and crew.
I got to meet Elijah wood about a week ago, one of the sweetest dudes alive! He mentioned the part in your video when the set got flooded away, he also added that they went from filming the scene from the first movie (which had the set ready for the first movie) to filming a scene from the third movie as their contingency plan to not waste time. Elijah mentioned how he had to go from being the hopeful and healthy frodo to the beaten and worn down Frodo in the matter of days. He still pulled it off brilliantly and I gave him mad respect for mastering his craft
I remember my dad telling me about these when I was in 4th grade! Then when the fellowship came out in theaters we went to go see it as a family, and me and my dad became life long fan’s! Cinema was created for these movies, the greatest movies of all time
I’ve watched the films countless times and read the books breathlessly. This is the moment, both in the films and the books, that the tears flow: to follow you dearest friend to the unknown on faith and hope alone. The long, grievous, and treacherous road behind only a shadow of the road ahead. “Of course you are… and I’m coming with you!” God I love it.

They didn't only do that thing with the helicopter pilot to mess with Sean Bean... but also to joke with the other Sean, Mr. Astin, as he was messed with so much for basically being the whole safety team XD he would regularly go up to the pilot and ask things like "how many years have you flown" "what's the casualty rate" and pretty much babysit the security and safety people because he didn't trust them to keep the crew and cast safe haha. I am religious about Behind the scenes of the LotR so this video is very nice to watch! I just can't get enough. I really like the movies, but i have always been more interested in the making of the movies themselves. Cheers! Nice video!
"I don't even remember when I first discovered these beatiful films..." I was there 3000 years ago, when Isildur took the Ring. I was there the day the strength of men failed. I was there, when the cinemas all around the world played the movies. Damn, I'm old.
It is very easy to assume that Sam’s eventual journey to the undying lands meant he would see Frodo again, but sadly this almost certainly would not have occurred. The name “undying lands” implies that all who journey there won’t die, but this is only true for elves who are already immortal, while for mortals time actually seems to pass more quickly than in middle earth. Frodo would have grown old and died long before Sam arrived, but I’m sure Sam still loved getting to see the place before his own death.
I love the fact that this set of 50 facts was made. A sign of a true fan. I am also amused that Aragorn was referred to as Eragon multiple times around the 20 minute mark haha

I've been to the path, the forest is spooky and beautiful and incredible and while the prop isn't there, there is still a hollow under some tree roots that is very similar and many who visit reenact the scene. Ive visited the rivers too, including where Aragorn washed up.
For anyone interested, most of these facts come the dvd extras, which can be found on UA-cam. There’s at least 12 hours of them and they are almost as good as the films, the story of how they were made is an epic tale of its own!
Recommend the commentary as well! Yet to watch them myself but I saw like 30 min on my DVD and there was a lot of funny info. But also lots of banter and Dominic and Billy would make up a lot of facts as a joke, so don't take their word for everything they say in the commentary XD Christopher Lee is also the hugest nerd in the commentary "Did you know" kinda facts from him and stuff. Can't wait to watch the rest. There's 3 different commentaries: Cast (all the actors who played the main Hobbits, Sean Bean, Christopher, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, and Bernard Hill are the one's I heard) then there's the directors commentary and lastly the art and set department commentary. So 12 hours? No, if you count all the commentaries you get almost 24 hours of special features for at least the first movie. It's just amazing!!
Viggo is that much of a badass that the dwarfs headbutting each other in the hobbit to say hello comes from what he done back stage when playing aragorn 😮😊

Thats a very good fact ! 👏
Awesome fact!
It is truly insane how much work went into the making of this trilogy

Whaaa?
Many of the surviving characters went there. Sam, Frodo, Bilbo, Legalos, Gimli, Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, ... however Marry did not, nor Pippin, neither did Aragorn or Arwyn.
Treebeard also didn't go, in case you were wondering. Might have finally reunited with the entwives if he had. Who knows?
So much love and respect towards Tolkien was poured into this, can’t say the same for the soulless Amazon fanfic

@@aronakesater5467 bet he would agree 100%
@@Mvnvce what are you basing that statement on? Can’t be tolkiens own words for sure.
@@aronakesater5467 I’m basing it on common sense. The Amazon “lotr” is soulless
His father wrote battles in those books I guess. I don't see what's wrong with including those in the movies. LOTR an action movie ? Really ?
@@kingsoren2010 it would be 30hours long to include everything. Its called adaptation
@@whitetipvelociraptor5759he’d probably hop on it like an un neutered dog. Lol
Anytime LOTR scenes play and that soundtrack, I start to Tear up. Such beautiful movies.
4. A lot of people believe JRR Tolkien is British but he was actually born in South Africa
Great compilation! All of these are true.

It's easy to forget how old these movies are. They hold up much better than most films made around the same time.
Learned that from the staff at Wheta Workshop down in Wellington a couple years back, where fun fact, they have a working Warthog from the planned Halo movie that never went anywhere.
average weight of a longsword/twohanded arming sword is 1.8 kg, if they weighed more than that, nobody would use them
didn’t wētā workshop give all the actors that fake chainmail that’s really lightweight tho? even so, just the sword alone is impressive
@@crunchyycarrot359 They did, except as I mentioned, Viggo insisted on real chainmail, rather than the prop/lightened version.
I've always said that Viggo is just Aragorn, who was the only Man ever to be rebodied, just so he could film the movies.
His sword weighed 4.9 pounds or 2.25kg and was sold at auction.
