In 2010 I was an obese pack a day smoker who also drank too much booze. I saw Sister Bruder on TV. All I wanted to do after seeing her was one day quit smoking. That's all. Just stop smoking. So I did in 2011 and have not smoked since. That lead to an unexpected chain reaction of eating better, no more alcohol, weight loss, bicycle riding and a whole new me. I went from sickly middle aged couch potato to a guy who rides a bicycle 150 miles a week. She inspired me to stop smoking. I give her that. As for the rest that followed perhaps that was some sort of divine intervention? Anyway...I am pleased with what happened.
I love it, too, but it does help to not have to answer to a husband and take care of children and a house. I'm glad she didn't let the negative attitude of the other Sisters hold her back.
Last week, early Dec 2023, I invited SM to my home in Penticton, BC where she had raced Ironman Canada 22 times. At 93, she was missing some of her friends there. I figured she and I would sit around the fireplace, eating candy out of our socks - but NO! She insisted we both go swimming, telling me she would do 6 laps of the 25m pool, but I counted...she did 11. What a joy and privilege it has been to be her friend. We've raced 16 Ironmans together and she has beaten me, 31 years her junior, 9 of those times. Her laugh is infectious and her friendship a treasure. May she inspire us all to get off the couch, go outside and MOVE! Read her book The Grace to Race for more insights, and see her NIKE commercial that played during the Rio Olympics. Pure gold!
Delighted to hear she is still alive as I've seen this video was made six years ago. When you see her again, please tell her she is so awesome and I'm watching her video in awe here in Ireland. She's exceptional 😊
“The past is dead and gone. The future is not the future until it gets here, and then it’s the present moment. That is the only thing that you’re responsible for.”
Hope is endurance, it’s faith, a never giving up attitude. If we ever as human beings loose hope, we are lost! What an amazing human being she is! ❤️🙏🏽
Time and patience. If you just started, that's totally to be expected. Keep at it. Do some strength training, and above all patience and consistency! Keep at it.
I think a lot of it is diet. You are what you eat. Some foods fuel a person better than others. Many swear by the keto or carnivore diets. I personally do a very meat heavy keto diet with grass fed beef. Eat a few organic fruits & veggies. No milk, no grains, no eggs, no sugar. And I have done over 100 miles this month between walking, tennis, a little jogging...and I am hypermobile too! Dont have any knee pain even though my knees naturally hyperextend. And deep sleep! You need good sleep to heal the body! Go to bed when the sun sets and wake up when it rises. Get vitamin D. Sunlight. I think on average my watch says I do about 11 miles a day? I would have to check what the actual milage total is... Next year I will be 50. My HRV is 55. And I exercise every day.
I agree : dont act your age, act your joy of life, be active , play, communicate, dance, dream, be creative. Love and celebrate llife in all possible ways. 🐸💚🍀
Anxiety isn’t always due to the future because for years after I was almost killed in an accident I had anxiety when the thought would come into my mind (and I couldn’t control it). This nun is interesting and it seems like has a wealth of knowledge.
Focus on momentum over motivation. Just start with something small today, anything at all. A short jog or maybe a few squats or something. Then do something small again tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that, and so on. Soon, you'll find that with a little momentum you can build up speed and achieve something awesome!
I'll bet if I was celibate for almost 90 years, then i'd also be a badass. Just kidding. This lady is an inspiration, and her spirit just shines through in this interview. I am grateful for her example.

This woman's attitude is inspiring.

@Veronica Daniels Those are some lucky women, as I know my husband wouldn't have dealt with kids to that extent.
So is her bike fit
This woman is simply amazing, and an inspiration. I bow to you, Madonna Buder.
IKR
I take my hat off to this lady.
She is an inspiration to everybody, no doubt about it.
"A human being without hope is a lost human!"
About 20 years ago I did some triathlons with her and she was amazing. Blew by me on the bike like I was on a tricycle.

Find the kind of sports that fit. Knees are what they are. Losing weight also helps, if applicable.
Dont heel strike, run mid or front foot and buy some shoes with zero drop.
I imagine she eats home cooked, nutritious food and has barely eaten any processed food over the years…
This lady is amazing. I love her. What a message.... Thank you Sister Madonna.
I hope I can be like her when I grow up!

Anxiety isn’t always due to the future because for years after I was almost killed in an accident I had anxiety when the thought would come into my mind (and I couldn’t control it). This nun is interesting and it seems like has a wealth of knowledge.
Although she explained that the past for her was dead gone. Maybe she overgeneralised her thoughts and applied them to anyone.
Bella thats ptsd
Amazing!
David Goggins would be impressed.
He would definitely be impressed but probably say something like "Merry f***ing christmas get back to work lady!" Lol
I’m out of breath jogging down the end of my road and I’m only 34. What an inspirational woman. Wish I had her motivation.
