I really can't describe how good this content is. As an aspiring artist, it's super helpful and enrichening to watch your videos, with all your inputs. Thanks so much!
agree
You guys got to interview him. So many comics masters going away...i wish you could interview all of that are still alive. Thanks for the work, guys.
I really appreciate you guys yknow? Your love and passion for the medium feels super validating and I feel like I’m in the same room as you guys. Thanks for all the great stuff throughout the year! It’s really gotten me through some times.
Glad you guys got around to featuring Steve Rude on the channel! I've been a fan of his since I stumbled across The Moth in a library book sale. He has some of the best attributes of the Toth/Kirby generation and the more "animation" styles of Darwyn Cooke and Bruce Timm.
Steve Rude's art is among my favorite. So crazy to see how lifelike he can make even the weirdest aliens look. It makes sense after seeing all the work in this sketch book though.
It's like you guys are going through my bookshelf sometimes. You should feature that old Bill Sienkiewicz sketchbook that Fantagraphics did too. That's a nice one also.
Great video. Nexus is an all time fave. Gary Martin was a perfect fit to ink Rude’s pencils and he has an art book on comic inking that has been helpful for me
Love Rude's work. Have you guys reviewed Nexus? There were some thought provoking stories in that series. Baron addressed ideas like asylum, immigration & assimilation. Representative government. Religious extremism & the limits of a free society. Even racial identity politics on college campuses (and this was the mid 80's). I imagine that these stories would not be welcomed by the 2020 internet comics community in today's illiberal world.
Great stuff. Maybe the best comic book of the 80's.
Incroyable !
Encore merci.
THE DUDE! He is a legend
He's the best- thanks for this vid!
Cool stuff, love Rude. Thanks for the look guys. More sketch books would be great.
Damn, a new video already! Im still catching up on the last few ones. Y'all are doing an amazing job.
Thank you for blowing up the thumbnails and having the comic for comparison. Bonus for the extra work done!
Wow, this is a great book. Too bad it is out of print (Is Kitchen Sink still publishing?). Love Steve Rude's art -simple line drawings with some shadow play. But not the excessive lines for the sake of lines like the Image founders.
I think he is more "classically" trained artist? Reminds me of some of his peers like Dave Stevens (Rocketeer), Mark Schultz (Xenozoic Tales), Mike Allred (Madman), Alex Ross -comtemporary artists whose art styles are still highly influenced by the artists they grew up -mainly Jack Kirby. In Steve Rude's case, Alex Toth as well.
Thank you for showing me a book I will unlikely have in my collection.
Man -- I haven't seen my copy around for years. I have to wonder if it's gone.
Great episode!
I'd be shocked if you guys AREN'T familiar with it, but the Modern Masters series from TwoMorrows Publishing is fantastic. Not quite sketchbooks, but sort of sketchbook-adjacent. Book length, super in-depth interviews with major talent along with decent galleries of selected works. I love them, and highly recommend them. Figured I'd pass it along just in case anyone's unfamiliar.
Ed! I haven't heard anyone say "chicken scratch" since I was in gr3. Made me laugh. Thanks for that. You guys keep knocking it out of the park
I love Steve Rude. He's such a madman.
Thanks for doing this - I messaged you on IG asking if you'd ever do a Steve Rude video about a month or so ago and it was really interesting to hear your take on his technique. He's one of my favorites along with David Lapham and Chris Ware, I think because the composition is so thoughtful and there's a strong sense of graphic design as well as illustration. I'd really like to see his work get more recognition!
You guys are awesome man, thank you for so much rad content 🤙🏼
Amazing...this is an absolute classic!!
Thank you so much. Rude is the man.
Really Great Episode!
rude is amazing, his pencils are 100%, his skill def came across in the Nexus stuff
I dig Steve Rude a ton. Quality! Also, just got my copy of STREET ANGEL: DEADLIEST GIRL ALIVE. Love the artwork and book design.
Thanks, James!
Need it! Steve rude is amazing.
THE RUDE DUDE.
I love Steve Rude.
Great Vid, Guys. FYI - Titan just released (last month) a box set of two Loomis books that includes "Figure Drawing for All it's Worth" and "Drawing the Head and Hands". Both are hardcover. You can find it on Amazon for under $60 (as of today's date). Cheers!
Rude Awakening!
I always liked Rude's art! Have you guys seen his documentary? It's very good but also sad.
One of the most generous open approachable artists Ever!
G G t
