  • Just acquired a 2006 Volvo V50 D5, very nice condition, but has some issues, that made it fairly cheap, but obviously needs some work done.
Definitely not a replacement for the Jeep, i just need something cheaper to run for the long distance journeys, but it should not be a boring ride either, that's why i opted for the 180hp 2.4ltr 5 cylinder Diesel with the 5 speed Aisin AW55 Auto box.
This episode is an initial walk around and a few essential checks. following parts will cover the repairs and addressing the rather long list of stored faults.
    Main issues so far:
General lack of maintenance, intermittent check engine light, gearbox shifting rough sometimes, suspension bushes worn, shocks dead, tailgate struts dead,
automatic headlight adjustment not working,....just to name a few
This thing is full of electronics, essentially a bunch of networked processors. A lot of issues might be just poor contacts so the most important thing to have is the right diagnostic tools, (available on ebay or from Volvo for big $$), a normal OBD scanner won't be suitable as it does not cover the Volvo specific stuff.
The huge amount of sensors and actuators makes it almost impossible to diagnose issues, without Vida/DICE, especially if they are random errors.
Probably another reason why they go fairly cheap, the dealerships charge big money for fixing little things because it's time cosuming, spare parts are quite affordable, but without software, Joe Public can do pretty much nothing.
In the next episode, we have a closer look at the Volvo specific diagnostic stuff..

nice catch on the surface, not bad for 1200 quid... gotta wait to see what other surprises await you with this little egg. i had two volvos in my life: a '75 - 245 DL and a 79 - 264 GL and i really loved them both. the 200 series were good for half a million miles if basic maintenance was kept up on.
that thing looks like a real nightmare to work on. the 245 i had was pretty basic and straight forward but the 264 was getting into the pain-in-the-arse territory although it didn't have the inverse engine yet. if you ever have anything to do on the engine you should probably drop it out to get at it as there is barely enough room to get your hands in there anywhere...
those 5 cylinder diesels run a little squirrely anyway...they tend to sound as smooth as a sack of walnuts rolling on piece of sheet metal...your mic on the camera wasn't picking up the sound all that well so it's hard to say what the issue might be.
the only bitch i had with my volvo was any part was a minimum of a hundred dollar bill and up..except for spark plugs and oil filters....

I can hear it on the video, but you need to know what to listen for, this is a D5 engine made by Volvo, entirely different to the older ones made by VW. Probably one of the last real Volvo engines as they now belong to Ford, The V50 suspension and sub frames are already the same as the MK2 Ford Focus, most parts are in fact interchangeable. This thing has nothing to do with the old Volvos, it's essentially a collection of networked computers on wheels. At least 50% of the issues are sensor and/or actuator problems, either faulty or just poor contact. Without a laptop in your toolbox, you pretty much lost if it starts playing up.... Currently tracing an intermittent DPF system fault, i bet it's just a poor connection because i simply don't believe that 3 different sensors always go faulty at exactly the same time ..... Luckily i am comfortable with electronics and computers as well,... :-)

I can't find part 2? Very interested to keep on watching as I bought a V5 2.4 D5 yesterday. 175k with full Volvo service history. The thing that is confusing me is in gear (it's an automatic) it's fine. But if I put my foot down it has almost zero pull, I really don't understand?
Thanks in advance for any help or replies!

Hi, there is a playlist with all my Volvo stuff, 12 videos in total.
There are many reasons for lack of power, does it rev up when you go full throttle ? Do you have an engine service message ?
Hard to tell without details, but check egr valve, air filter, and transmission fluid, also look at the fault code list. At 175k you may also have dead valve lifters, causing lack of power, too. You will need a Dice and the VIDA software, generic scanners can be very misleading as Volvo is somewhat special.

@@dynoguy Thank you so much for your fast reply! Interesting you say that. A 'engine service message' popped up earlier, but this was after I cleaned the MAF with correct MAF cleaner.
I will try and find your other V5 videos. I am a bit of a dinosaur with computers, so hopefully I will find it!

Looks good for the price. Hopefully you get a long life out of her.

It certainly does look very nice, as far as i can see it's just normal maintenance and a bunch consumables which are simply worn out at 140k , quite a bit of work, but the base appears to be good

Hi,I ve bought a V50 1,6Din January with 170000 km,first it seemed a nice and good car for my family ,but it has lots of issues.on the dashboard keeps coming the motor warning sign, also after changing the smoke filter it came back.
Now we think its one of the sensors that s broke.are they difficult to replace and search for new or in scrap car?thank you for your video also ;-)

Thanks,...yes, the sensors can be faulty, i had a dodgy exhaust gas temperature sensor which only did not work when cold, one hot it was fine, changed it and all good now.
I would never ever buy second hand senor, changing is not always easy (usually hard to access), used sensors are probablb;y end of life, too. Not worth saving a few $$, a new one is only around $60 and you get at least some useful service life out of it
Don't know much about the 1.6 Diesel, mine is a 2.4 D5, but the sensor/DPF/catalyst arrangement is pretty much the same.
By today, my car has 146800 miles on the clock (234880 km)

Never !!...Just need something cheaper to run for the longer journeys, this one does at least double the miles to the gallon ...:-)
