- Two 8 x 10 acrylic pours using negative space!
I wanted to create images that I could use in my marketing materials, but I only wanted to pour paint on a portion of the canvas. The blank portion of the canvas (solid colored area) is called "negative space".
Materials used:
8x10 canvas panels
Golden Polymer Medium
Golden Fluid Paint - Ultramarine Blue
Golden Heavy Body Paint - Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold
Liquitex Acrylic Ink - Transparent Burnt Umber and Iridescent Gold
Glidden Diamond - Eggshell Base 1 Pure White
Artist's Loft - Titanium White
Stir Sticks
Water
Cups
Gloves
these are very pretty. i love your choice of colors and technique. thanks for sharing
Thank you Sarah. Beautiful. I like how you're doing small sections in space rather than one full board. I will be following you.
Sandra Stevens Thank you Sandra! I've tried negative space before but I usually end up with too much paint on the canvas :-)
Very pretty - both of them. Thank you for sharing.
Jan Abbott Michaud Thank you Jan :-)
gorgeous use of colours, its beautiful
Beautiful use of the "dirty pour" technique. :)
Kirsten Gilmore Thank you Kirsten :-)
These are beautiful! I love your color combinations. :) And I really like the texture you got in the paintings -- to me that's a bonus!
Lori Kingston Thanks Lori! Some people don't like the texture but I do :-)
love the colors Thx for video
Harriet S Thank you :-)
VERY NICE SARAH.......BEAUTIFUL......
ANN FORLBY Thank you Ann :-)
I think I'm going to make then into business card graphics -- although I did one today that I REALLY love!
Sarah wow! Greetings from Mexico!
Rocio Chavez Hi Rocio :-)
beautiful
Annie Tremblay Thank you Annie :-)
Awesome work Sarah👌🏽💜
jennymiko Thanks Jenny 😄

roberte tanghe Merci Roberte :-)
avez-vous mis aussi du silicone dans le blanc.? vos couleurs sont superbes.
Where did the blue go? They turned out very pleasing. I like the negative space.
Linnea Beckman Blue tends to disappear, especially ultramarine blue. There would have probably been more if I had thinned it out more on the canvas.
Very pretty, Like the colors. Thank you. How did you keep the panels from warping? I've added extra gesso coats, and they still bow.
Linnea Beckman They did warp some, but I was still able to get them in standard picture frames.

Please, please, please turn off the autofocus. Your pictures are fab but the repeated fuzzy blurring whenever something moves towards the camera gives me a headache
Iona - Sky Yes, I'm aware -- I can't edit the video to fix it, but I have been correcting the problem is future videos :-)
Love these. But can you please tell me what you mean by House Paint? I am in Australia.
House paint is paint you buy at the hardware store, like Home Depot, that comes in 1 gallon paint cans (and other sizes). You use it to paint your house and walls and stuff. The brand I use is Glidden Diamond -- it's 100% acrylic. If you do use house paint, make sure it's 100% acrylic INTERIOR paint. The exterior paint contains more chemicals (pesticides and stuff).
Very interested in watching your pours but that auto focus on your camera is doing dreadful things to my equilibrium and eyes :( end results were very interesting....
What were you heating the paint with a torch or a regular fire starter?
Thank you! I was using a Scripto WindResistant lighter, and I've put the autofocus on the pre-filming checklist!
Lovely paintings and colours! What is the little torch you use? I see people using blooming great blow torches which look a bit daunting to use...
It is a long handled lighter made by Scripto. It's wind resistant so acts like a tiny torch. I love it. I don't always torch. Just be careful using a torch -- some of the materials can be flammable.
sorry but can you tell me where you get the sylicon
Maria Jackson I got the silicone at walmart in the automotive section. It's called 3 in 1 All-Temp silicone.
I really liked that it was elevated in some areas. How did you get it that way?!
Tina Falk It just did it naturally as a result of using Glidden Diamond with the regular paint.
I liked this as technique, but did you intensionally turn off the audio in part of this presentation or was that an error? Just wondering if you were explaining anything that didn't come through as voice.
Barbara Dierolf That portion of the video is actually sped up, and I didn't record audio with that portion of the video. This is actually 2 days of filming that I've edited into one. I'm going to add music but it takes a while for it to update in youtube.
Beautiful! What is the purpose of the torching?
Bunny Jones It helps the cells form. If you look carefully, you can see them forming after I move the torch over them.
Very pretty and well done. Was your white base on this the titanium white with the gloss gel?
Jeri Ragan Nope. Just paint and water. I did run out of white glidden so I used white artist's loft, but there was no medium other than water.

Hi Sarah. I really like these paintings! Beautiful colors and I am a fan of the white negative space. Just wondering - what type of torch are you using? Thanks!
Painting with Travis Travis, it's a Scripto WindResistant lighter that I bought at Walmart near the barbecue supplies. It also comes in a two-pack by the registers, but one of the lighters is not wind resistant.
Ha - I just realized that I used my Painting with Travis account - Travis is my horse - don't think I will let him play with lighters! lol - Do you think that a lighter works well for popping bubbles instead of using the butane torches like other people use? And do you use the WindResistant one for a reason - like a bigger flame? Those torches make me a bit nervous to use and I thought it looked like you were just using a lighter. Thanks!
Painting with Travis Yes it does pop bubbles - though I don't know if it works with resin because I haven't used that yet. It is a lighter but the flame is more like the torches you're talking about. The flame is smaller than a hand torch though.
Thanks! I just want it to pop those annoying little bubbles in the paint. Sounds like this can do the job :)
Great color choices!
Thank you!
Hello dear sarah fezio, love your artwork! They are all so beautiful :) Just started following you :) Btw, had a question, I have couple of acrylic paintings done with some shimmers and silver leafs but I have already varnished them already. Do you think I can use this technique on a varnished canvas? Would it adhere to the canvas or I'll have to add some mediums to it? I would really like to redo those canvases at least partially, like half of the canvas would be using the pouring technique and the other half would be kept untouched. I have lots of acrylic paints by craft smart and Martha stewart, hope those will work with the mediums. Would really appreciate your opinion/advice on this :) Thanks so much for your inspiration :)
Christy nina Thank you Christy! I appreciate it :-)
What kind of varnish did you use to seal the painting?
The first pour was it medium or just Titanic white. Thanks
Cecil Tan I used Glidden Diamond Eggshell Base 1. Then I ran out so I mixed up some Artist's Loft white. I didn't add any polymer medium to either white, just water.
Hi Sarah. Great video apart from the autofocus but you are gonna sort that out now so that's all good. I love the negative space painting much better than full canvas cover - it's better to look at I reckon - more arty!! Thanks for sharing with us and explaining lots of stuff. Cheers, DEB T
No audio? Would really love some explanation along with it all. 😕
Cathy holmes I talked in the beginning and the end. I thought I could add music just in the middle, it seems to only let me do one or the other audio. I'm still looking into it.
HI, can I use my heat gun instead.
allabouteveshop I don't think so because a heat gun blows air (or the ones I've seen do). You could use it to blow the paint around on the canvas though -- that's one way to do a pour!

Stunning
is there any silicon in the color paints?
Very unpleasant to watch because of the auto focus fluctuations.
ZakZky007 I know, but it would not have focused on the closeups. Do you have any suggestions for a better cam? because I am looking for one...
Just manual focus while you work? Go Pro would be good choice. Otherwise I like you work... :-)
ZakZky007 It's a webcam so it doesn't have manual focus like an actual camera. It can't focus on the white very well for one thing but it's one of the most recommended webcams out there. I can try to record with an actual camera, but I have to buy some equipment that's $$$
Lovely colours but the camera makes it hard to watch
Instead of a torch are you using a fire starter? That is what it looked like.
Yes, but it's a wind resistant fire starter. I feel it's safer than a torch because you can't accidentally leave the gas on.
Great tip. Can't afford a torch right now (in my case, I wasn't a 'starving artist', but made 'starving' by all the art supplies!) but I could perhaps buy one of these. Thank you again!
From where you get fire for your painting.?
what tools do you use ?
I always list my supplies in the video description. I'm using a Scripto Wind Resistant lighter. I got it at Walmart :)
Love the pour, beautiful. Camera auto focus not.
I wonder if something similar could be done using only paint (plus pouring medium and silicone) and without ink. I tried it once, but added Midnight Blue - and the whole thing went far too gray - nothing like this lovely piece. I'm not trying to copy your work - only trying to get a finished project with white space and gold/white/parchment/burnt sienna and wedgewood blue. No ink. I'll keep trying!
thx Sarah, love your vids.....your camera keeps going in & out of focus, hard on the eyes....always look forward to your posts
Karren Smeal I know :-( I'm looking for suggestions on another cam if you have any ideas!
sorry..I'm a dummy in that area :( wouldn't we rather pour paint? :)
Sarah Fezio if you're using a autofocus camera (mine is a Logitech R920) I googled and found an app to download that let me disable autofocus. I know because a couple of my videos made my eyes go loopy trying to edit it. Hope that helps.
K Grace Howes I figured out how to disable it but it doesn't default to that. I've been trying to remember to turn auto focus off. Thanks for the tip :-)
As much as I've enjoyed many different artists showing us their beautiful creations I really have a problem when you're not prepared. Mixing paint, etc...is boring and time consuming, have it ready to go or stop your camera. Most people have busy lives and not a lot of time for watching videos. Its just a constructive comment, not meant to hurt anyones feelings. I want to watch them ALL but unfortunately I have to jump ahead when artists aren't ready to go.
I think you are talented and eloquent. I find it difficult to watch your videos due to your camera's focusing issues. Just fyi.
goinging1 I fixed it in later videos! I now have it on my pre-filming checklist!
What does this mean? Quinacridone nickel azo gold...I'm assuming this was the bright orangey rust color. But frpm the name I would have no idea it was this color.
That is the name of the color lol.
Your camera makes it tough to watch.
.
Ruff ruff, hard to watch! Boooo
geeze, hold your hand still showing the products
Not everyone is versed in filming. The materials are also listed in the description. Just be grateful there is a video at all... perhaps be nicer and people will take your bitchy criticism constructively.
