For Nahuatl to thrive, there need to be areas that work monolingually with schools teaching through Nahuatl only and has to thrive in urban settings that Nahuatl is widely understood in Mexico City. They ought to define regions where most of the citizens speak Nahuatl as monolingual and set up signs in Nahuatl only hile private signs ought to become at least bilingual as they do in the Irish Gaeltacht.

Why? There is no reason when the dominate culture and language is Spanish? It is like wanting all people in California to suddenly all learn to speak Miwok. Why should the population of Mexico learn Nahuatl when Mexico was never a homogenous population who spoke the same language in the first place and actually outright HATED each other? Still to this day other Indian tribes don't like other Indian tribes OR their language. You are also making the assumption that Mexicans are all the same ethnically not everyone is Native and yet this would be mandatory? Even in the terms of Native populations you would be forcing Mayans to speak Nahuatl which is basically even more of a dead language than Mayan? The Mayan in their region actually have more of a chance and it actually makes more sense for them to have programs that help keep the language going as their culture is stronger, more organized linguistically and culturally. In fact there are many Maya who don't even speak SPANISH. Asking the general population of Mexico to speak Nahuatl is assuming everyone in majority shares a Native American heritage! OMG 🤣

I'm on a similar page. Originally from Hidalgo and speak 7ish languages but just now starting to get into Nahuatl. It seems surprisingly easy, but it's frustrating the lack of resources and the conflicting information because of all the variants.
We need the Nahuatl equivalent to the Real Academia Espanola to try to lay some groundwork and standardize a few things but this should come from the people who still speak it. Unfortunately, I fear that the only reason they still speak it is bc of the government hasn't addressed the needs of these regions/people and if they did, the language would be fully lost to an all spanish education.

@lostpelican1883 This is very true. I don’t think he intentionally meant to be rude, but I also agree that whenever possible elders should always be respected and approached accordingly in regard to the culture in which one interacts. In some cultures it’s extremely important like in Japan. It’s less strict now but speaking casually to elders and higher ups is a definite no. The grammar is stratified in accordance to the social status and age to whom one is interacting with. When you know better you do better. If he interacts with them enough I think he will pick up on it or someone will tell him if it’s wrong.

LOL This was Span-huatl. Half Spanish, half Nahuatl at least you found a teacher for Nahuatl. FYI Jorge is not Gregory in Spanish. Jorge is George in English. Gregory is Gregorio in Spanish. ;)

I met someone who said that the Algonquin language & the Mayan language is similar....he said to me: Inga Lache alache(I see you in me). I know I didn't spell it right but I remember the phrase....I thought he was a Blackman & he had the mayan nose & negro hair....it was interesting to me.
    Do you speak Algonquin...
