Russ, Thank you so much for this lesson I just started Playing Banjo and I just cant put it down I love the sound soooooo much every day I have to play and this wil be someting I will work on the rest of my Life and remember Your video. From the back woods of ALASKA thank you again.
Thanks, Russ - very helpful breakdown. I was told many years ago that Earl never passed up an opportunity to bend a note and I've tried to incorporate at least some of that.
It's a great thing that you share this type of thing thanks Russ. It also keeps alive the folk music tradition of passing on stuff. I wish you a very happy Christmas and all the peace you need 🙂
This is exceptional. What I needed when I was playing . . . (er, I mean attempting to learn. . . .) a lot. And what helps too is the camera on your hat. Seeing your work from the same perspective as you're seeing it. Man. I appreciate this.
The first type of slide you showed is great for a beginner like myself. I'm 58 just this March 2020 and am enjoying some practice time. But I do believe with time I can learn the bends and pulloffs you are teaching here. Thank you Sir
Keep at it, Becky, the best advice I can give you is, practice in 30 minute sessions a couple of times a day, it'll give what you learn a wee bit of time to sink in, long sessions just become frustrating. Good luck.
I'm glued to it sir I've been at this for a couple of days thanks so much I'm learning on a tenor but that's ok it's the practice on the bends n pull off n alernate picking n I'll learn it thanks to u n a couple of other teachers
Did anyone notice the nut on the banjo??? The second string is lengthened..... Very cool... I did this to a Gibson banjo years ago and worked great...wasn't my idea, came from Stelling, but still did a great job with intonation....
It comes partly from the different path lengths of the strings from the nut to the bridge. The bridge can also be adjusted. I like the moon 🌙 bridges. There’s numerous options.
You’re dead right! I didn’t even notice that as a relatively new banjo player but played guitar over 50 years I was doing this unconsciously while working through Earls book. It’s just doesn’t sound like him unless you do it. But to find I was intentionally doing it but completely unconsciously blew me out. Groundspeed, all of them have the microtone blue note additions. It amazes but then after 50 years fretting it amazes me that my hand remembers song my brain had long forgotten, like a bunch ragtime solos that came back I learned in 1977 in the art of ragtime guitar. I just happened to voice a G7 chord in the same idiosyncratic manner as the solo while messing about and my hand went off into the Ragtime Ramble alternating bass with the syncopated counterpoint like I learned it yesterday. Music is very subconscious come to think of it really. Still an interesting observation.
I bought Earl's book because I wanted to play his songs exactly like he did. The problem is, Earl would often make little changes in how he picked a song. I think he kept it kind of basic in his book.
I gather Bill Keith might have written the book, transcribing what Earl played. I imagine Earl couldn't necessarily say exactly what notes he'd just played, being "in the moment" and in any case probably played a few versions without thinking :-)
Just learned to play this sounds nothing like yours, just cannot get the speed. Great video, wish I could play at your level.i would be satisfied with your slow.
Thank you fer posting! i kno these licks n thats how i play pertnear🎶 Yes gotta practice alot! Are you pickin the last tune in Yer vid.? if so, You sound Awesome!!🎵
Thanks! Subscibed. How come ya to keep your truss rod cover off (just brand anonymity probably?) -- well anyway THANK because it's SO hard for me to STOP and change something I've formed muscle memory for. People may say Join the Club but seriously I am a bit "on the spectrum" and seriously rely on habit, so it's important ingrain this sooner than later! BAD Bennett Sullivan keeping that for later BAD!! Just kidding, but thanks.
Im still a beginner. I play guitar and im very good ... but not amazing. I have stubby fingers and got great sustain and power. But its hard for me to play certain fret positions due to the alien style fingertips.. Do you have more lesson videos. I want to be great at banjo
HI ,Yes I can p[ay faster when I play cripple creek because my nand has a shorter way to go I think it sunds the same but will speed your playing up so thanks for showing us another way to the slide. 🪕

Russ is one of my idols
Rocking a Morgan Monroe banjo atm trying to make stuff sound as good as he does isn’t working yet lol
Just started playing banjo. Thanks for the tip that I can teach myself now and not have to retrain later!
That sounds so different and so much better....great 👍
Nice! thanks for going through it with such precision
So this is where twang comes from
Did anyone notice the nut on the banjo??? The second string is lengthened..... Very cool... I did this to a Gibson banjo years ago and worked great...wasn't my idea, came from Stelling, but still did a great job with intonation....
So that has a purpose. Ha! I was thinking he needed a new nut... Any idea why it needs lengthening?
It automatically adjusts the intonation of second string which otherwise never sounds quite in tune.
I did that to my bridge on the third string groove,,,I always find the third string goes sharp up the neck..no?
It comes partly from the different path lengths of the strings from the nut to the bridge.
The bridge can also be adjusted. I like the moon 🌙 bridges.

Thank you, kindly. I appreciate the lesson
Wow you just blew my mind. I felt like I was watching Stevie Ray play banjo!

Whats weird is in Earl Scruggs book th tab shows it with the 2 fret slide.
I bought Earl's book because I wanted to play his songs exactly like he did. The problem is, Earl would often make little changes in how he picked a song. I think he kept it kind of basic in his book.

I like this guy's style. I've already learned from this video. My 'Crippled Creek' just got well.
Just learned to play this sounds nothing like yours, just cannot get the speed. Great video, wish I could play at your level.i would be satisfied with your slow.
Great video Russ! Any chance we could get you to do Devil's Dream? I've been working on that sucker for a while and just can't seem to get it right.
Mark Tracy I think he doesn’t play Melodic style or much of it.
Whats with the nail by the nut?
Is it best to do the slide or the hammer for Cripple Creek?
Thank you fer posting! i kno these licks n thats how i play pertnear🎶 Yes gotta practice alot! Are you pickin the last tune in Yer vid.? if so, You sound Awesome!!🎵

Nope, I ain't the least bit intimidated
What was it that you played at 7:00?
Microscope It All I think he is just taking a bunch of licks and throwing them together. Might be a song though or close to one
More teaching videos please, man
Scruggs style picking is a curse on society. Give me old-time mountain picking every time.
Ha. What?
Ha ha ha for real? 😮
you’re nuts.
You blew my mind. Thank you for explaining this! I’ve got practicing to do. 🪕
HI ,Yes I can p[ay faster when I play cripple creek because my nand has a shorter way to go I think it sunds the same
but will speed your playing up so thanks for showing us another way to the slide. 🪕
Do you play with light gauge strings?
