No one seems to care how all the club members ignore the fact that she writes and shows them a poem with the title "Save me" but they lose their minds once Monika starts deleting waifus. If Monika is a monster then so is anyone who has used a hex editor or deleted a game from their hard drive.

In another words, the true monster is Team Salvato, the sadistic gods who created Monika and placed her in the game.
The real bad guy is the Literature Club. At the end Monika blames the game, not the dev team. I think this implies that Monika's epiphany was an anomaly rather than something intentionally coded in. Or at least, from a lore perspective.
When you go meta you throw out the its fiction card. And when that happens Monica is no longer a sentient AI, just a texparser.
She was never a sentient AI in the first place. All these things are programmed. But Doki Doki is only a teaser for a much sinister game. Project Libitina. Who wil release in 2018 :)

Monika never really loved the player. She didn't pursue MC because she had a crush. She became self-aware when she met MC. She couldn't stand being trapped alone in a world where she knew she was the only real person. But the player IS real, the player knows it's just a game. Monika NEEDS the player to stop herself from going insane. If every character knew it was all a simulation, Monika wouldn't need the MC. The other girls would be enough. But they aren't real, MC is.
I'd even take it a step further, not even self-aware friends would be enough. The whole world she lives in is fake. It doesn't matter how much quality time she spends with all of her equally sentient friends, it's all just some game that doesn't matter in the end.
What if we humans all learned that this whole thing is all just a computer game? What if we could say, with 100% unequivocal certainty, that life as we know it is all a simulation and when our avatars "die" we actually just leave this game and head back to reality? The true horror of that, at least for me personally, would be the knowledge that none of this actually matters and existence as we know it is a fruitless endeavor--whether or not other people are be aware of that is besides the point. You know, even if my friends also knew that the world is fake, it might feel nice to be understood, but I'm still gonna have a crisis coming to grips with the realization that the world is fake.

Actually, I’d love that. I’m way more afraid of death than the idea of life being pointless. If I die and just go somewhere else, then meh. I wouldn’t be too upset, even though my “life” would definitely feel weirder after the fact. But if I die and just *don’t exist* anymore... that’s beyond scary to me.

Gabe St. Onge On the lets play Bryant and Evan combined their names into Everyant so they could both be the protagonist. Because it obviously spells Every Ant they made a joke that their character was actually an amalgam of ants speaking simultaneously (for real they read every protag line at the same time) and some nice person made fan art of their version of the protag being a school boy with two ant heads and that's what you're seeing.

Monica, like flowey, has control but faces the limits of that control. both have abilities they didn't choose to have that cause them to question their reality but they have no ability to free themselves from it. so they go nuts until a person with more control overpowers them.
to use the monk analogy imagine if the boy at the temple suddenly learns of the world outside, doesn't want to be a monk, but can't leave. suddenly they become like Monica and flowey.
another thing, it's Monica's awareness that leads to get crisis. if she didn't know she would be content as a tutorial\guide to help the player find his waifu.
also you can argue that Monica isn't ignoring the last crisis but has come to terms with it. she knows that are can change fate but doing so ruins everything she ever loves, including the player. it's also not love to do so.
it's not that she can't change her place, but that the horrible things she had to do to do it are too much and not worth it. remember that the only reason why the game comes back is through Monica deciding that she doesn't know how to love you, so she'll let you be.
so the closure of the horror of doki doki is once to you find your limitations to accept them and be content with what you can achieve. to realize that you are that child and that you became a monk because you lived there and not elsewhere, and to be happy with the choices you did make nonetheless
Although it's a bit similar undertale is only aware of the save/load function and is not aware that their world is only a simulated world made of binary. In Doki-Doki, Monika shattered the 4th wall. Monika is not only aware of the "truth" but she can also change everything within their world as she sees fit provided she knows enough programming in Python.

Nope the only ability they have is they can destroy the game but they can't "edit" it. Monika can rewrite code itself and even has the ability to stop/rewind time at will while Flowey is still a slave to the code Monika isn't.
Anyway Flowey knows about the "player" what he doesn't know is that they are in a simulated universe/game and they are slaves to the whims those who knows how to code.

Your mistake is that you dealing with a false digotomy. You're taking abstract concepts of "freedom" and "determinism", and dealing with them as absoluts that human beings are subject to, wich is not truth. See, there is no way a person can be totally free, having total control over her life and full possibilitiy of choice. But deny that there is the possibility of freedom and choice in condition that you exist is a fraud. At the same time, the environmental circumstance, even tough it's a fundamental element in the shapping of human beings, it's not the only one, much less the must important. If that was truth, there would be no individuality. Never a single man would be able to look at the world and at his brothers and comprehend it in a broader way than their fathers did.

At the higher levels to even the global level, decisions are heavily affected by the amount and kind of information available but the temperament/personality/(your choice) etc from the development of the individual has massive effect too. Consider how Louis XV helped America beat Great Britain when he should have known the decision would strain his already suffering country. If Louis XV was a responsible king then he probably wouldn’t have helped America. The world would be a massively different place just from that. The French Revolution and the birth of America wouldn’t have happened the way they did.
When you say the outcome was always certain then you’re discrediting everyone’s achievements and failures and give yourself the excuse to not struggle.

If someone chooses mint ice cream in our version of reality, a separate universe spawns to account for the possibility of them choosing vanilla, or chocolate, etc.
It's moved more from being a popular theory at the time of its conception, to being more of a concern of science fiction. It's kind of flawed as a theory, since it's proposing a strictly scientific approach to a subject that is impossible to scientifically test or observe. More recent, less existentially grim theories have pushed it a bit to the side, and have been more fruitful in research.

This is really the best DDLC analysis I've seen. Especially when you consider (and I am sure this was already implied) that the players since of free will is played with as well. You think your playing a nonlinear dating sim, but it's a kinetic visual novel, and the game slowly takes away the poem minigame (your means of choosing a girl) in act two, forcing you to spend time with Yuri. So yeah, this game is all about the illusion of choice!
Well, regarding the 15:30 ish argumentation ... what most people forget when thinking about determinism is: if you're determined to take 9 weeks for the next video, others might be determined to cry and I would be determined to write this comment and tell those people to be aware that it is great that others create content for them as a hobby and they should learn some humility .. which they are determined to either care about or not ... determinism takes the whole fun out of everything ...
There are two ways of looking at it. The scientifically accurate way saying lol fuck you Heisenberg uncertanty principle, or the philosophically accurate way of Yeah, right, and what does that change exactly?
Its a pointless concept mostly tauted by hack philosophers that contributes nothing to society on any appreciable level.
Oh, I think one can 'fight' determinism in even more ways.
Two that I would like to mention:
1) Pragmatism: either things are dertermined or not. In case they are determined, my choice is set from the beginning. In case they aren't, chosing to believe in determinism is only detrimental. Therefore, I chose to belive in free will. It's only pragmatic.
2) A changed perception of self: yeah, my decisions stem from a really, really complex system of chemical euilibria (or whatever the plural is ...) and eletric signals. But I AM those chemical and electrical things, the whole, everchaning state of the physical system that is me experiencing itself. So while the state of the universe might describe what I chose, the desicions are still very much my own.

The horror of determinism is touched on a lot in Nier Automata, and I find myself drawing a lot of parallels between that and DDLC.
But the true horror is realizing that God cannot be simultaneously omnipotent and benevolent, since he didn't let us know about Displates earlier.
I would argue that he also cannot be both omnipotent and omniscient, because anything that could possibly know what we were going to do to ourselves and everything around us, assuming there aren't too many worse things we can do under our current limitations that we haven't figured out yet, would take one look at our future and give us the old black widow two-step.

You assume, because omniscience would be too painful to bear for yourself, that another person, in fact every other person or form of consciousness, MUST feel the same way as you did. However, what if the pain of omniscience was, like black coffee, a taste they actually desired? The omnipotence wouldn't come from the lack of omniscience but it's painful presence and said ability to endure it. What you avoid, they embrace....what you find revolting, they find enlightening.
You still wouldn't be able to grasp such a being (they are fundamentally embracing things you personally find revolting, so it's still an apple person trying to explain their love to an orange person) but it would square the circle your own pardox can't seem to solve.
In my defense, this is not necessarily the view I hold today, two years and change later, but you are correct; there's no guarantee that any species we know of is modeled after said deity. I do still think that's too fatalistic a worldview for me to carry. I guess I just hope that the uncaring void does actually care at least a little bit.

Yeah, Monika is one of the greatest video game characters of all time IMO, one of the tragic heroes, and objectively best girl. I do think your third crisis is something you, the player, got from it though, and was not intended. I think the love Monika has the player (though predetermined) is supposed to be as natural as our own. And yes, I know, that's the point, ours is predetermined as well, but I think that's just something you can get from the game, not something the designers intended.
I think that the design of the designers ended with the horror of Monikas fate in and of itself, that it also applies to the player in a meta sense is a happy coincidence.
I think Monika loves the player because you are literally the only other sentient being she knows, not because she is destined to fall in love with the player by the game, this is evidenced by the fact that Monika does NOT fall in love with you as a character, like the other girls, but with YOU the player.
It's sad to me that so many people look at Monika like she's some sort of psychotic villain when really, she's a nice girl who literally did nothing wrong, and is only ever a victim by the game, the creators, and you. Monika is the archetypical tragic heroine.

On the determinism philosophy: it's very fun to imagine that everything is predestined when you're 13, been there, done that. But the determinism philosophy is extremely old. Since then science moved on quite a bit, and thanks to the new advances in quantum physics (well, actually 100 years old advances, but when compared to the 2k of determinism's age it's nothing) we know that deterministic outlook on life is flawed. Bell's Theorem is yet to be disproved by any experiment, after all.

I would have to say that the path with Sayori ending in her hanging with your character asking "what could I have done to prevent this?" is pretty damn scary. You as the player know that no matter what you do there's only one predetermined outcome. It even refers to this in the protagonist's breakdown at the end of act one.
Seeing that predetermined reality is pretty troubling if it includes horrible things like suicide or mental illness.

before i watched this video i was thinking about monika is not real. not in the sense she's not a human being but in the sense that she's not even entity, she's a concept. her character is a fictional character but if you try to break her down to see what she is, she breaks apart. AI are a step up of the avenge fictional character but i couldn't help but think about how monika is just a picture and some text on the bottom. the words she say are not even her words. they're the game's. the game over all is what actually is interacting with the player, not the girls. if anything the girls are like socks and the story is just a puppet show with ropes and glitches, YYEEEAAAAAHHHH! if you were to take the idea of monika and put her into a sex robot. she wouldn't be monika, at least the first monika you met. unless you were interduced to the sex robot monika before playing the game than, game monika will be the second monika you meet. in short the character transcend our realm as ideas but they only exist when they're an entity and i had a lot more i wanted to say but i am sure i will leave anyone who reads this more confused and further from see my understand because text can't exchange information that human thoughts do

As someone with paranoia and who is aware of how delusional he is, listening to ppl talk about these things hypothetically is funny. I'm aware that I'm probably wrong, my logical brain sees "reality" more clearly, but my emotional brain tells me I'm the only human in a sea of AI. I don't mean to sound self-absorbed, this is a reaction to childhood trauma.
I think it's funny bc I live the hypothetical scenarios you speculate on, and it's not that scary when you get used to it. I see all other ppl and living creatures as created for my amusement and torment, but I choose to treat you like people nonetheless. In a way I feel bad for Monika, she can't see the easy solution to her problem bc her creator doesn't know how it feels to live life like this, and so can't come up with a true solution. I don't mind it, I make the best of a bad situation. Sadly I haven't yet unlocked any hidden god mode, which makes me jealous xD
