Welcome to 'EAVY CONTRAST, a series where I will try to paint miniatures
as close as possible (to the best of my ability) to the 'Eavy Metal
paint jobs using Contrast Paints and Highlights.
And in this episode I paint the MENANCING Drazhar, or Arhra if you want to use his real name.
Let's get cracking!

Thank you for letting me sponsor your great content, Juan!
Thank you for your support mate 😘
Scott and Juan. I could not think of a better justice team.
We just need Tendie Boy too and the club will be complete!
This get's my paintbrush wet! What a masterpiece, very well explained! Thanks for this! 🤓
Thanks for watching 😘
Absolutely Stunning, I'm going to try and convert a Drazhar into a Kharandras for my Craftworld Eldar. I will definitely be using this as an awesome paint guide!
Thanks 😘
Oh damn, that Talassar/Volupus mix! Damn that is perfect.
I KNOW!!
so much better than the official purples
I saw this one on Reddit and I loved him. Great to see the process here, lot's of handy little tricks to pick up out of this video. Particularly love the glazing of the armor to get the green tint and the gold recipe, will definitely be adopting those.
This is also the first time I've seen someone use Tesseract Glow and make it look good. Which is amazing.
Thanks, I actually live Tesseract Glow but you need to tone it down for the initial coat, and Warp Lightning os just perfect for that
I always like your work, but this one is on a whole different level. Absolutely amazing Juan 🤩
Thanks 😘
I've been watching pretty much all the guides on painting Drazhar and the Incubi.. this is easily the best. I just smashed hell out of the subscribe button.

Thanks alot! these are great sources for painting Dark Elves too!
Happy to help 😘
Love this Video. Must be the fifth time, that I watch it. =)
Drazhar is one of my absolute favorites and it is truly wonderful painted here.

Very jealous of your edge highlights brush control. This video is really coming at just the right time for me refreshing my aeldari. Cheers
Happy to help 😘
Juan,
Is there anything that you can't do? As always this is outstanding and educational. Again thank you for all the tips and painting ideas.
Ask my wife, I assure you she has a list
Phenomenal brush control 👌🏻
Thanks 😘
I think those gems needed even more cracks for you to paint lol sheesh. Good work!
😂😂😂😂 thanks
When you are explaining doing the "chunky" thunderhawk edgehighlights and trying to leave some room for a brighter, smaller highlight within it, I wanted to chime in that when I was learning edge highlights from your videos a couple years ago and struggling to sneak that second, brighter edge highlight on top of the first one...when it really feels like it's not going to fit, I think that's a great moment to begin suggesting volumes with your edge highlights. If a learner can't fit the brighter highlight inside the thunderhhawk edge line, maybe we can select the point of that edge where the most reflection would gather, generally toward the bottom? Starting to pick those out...and settling for a volume instead of a thinner line sometimes, is really how I took my first footsteps toward more interesting volumetric highlighting. Thanks for this video and for supporting Miniac
Well technically Miniac is supporting me here since he paid for the sponsorship and I'm infinitely thankful for that.
As for the edge highlights, yes you can totally do that, in fact I did that in my first videos but I always try to up the level of my videos and painting, this time I wanted to get much closer to the Eavy Metal method and standard than in previous tutorials.
the opening seconds alone , worth a like

I think this is your best paint job yet :o
I agree
Te ha quedado increíble. Estaba deseando verlo
Gracias guapo 😘
I watch your tutorials for inspiration, knowing that I could never even get close. Haha. Great work. :D
Thanks 😘
Gorgeous work! That glow effect looks real!
Thanks 😘

Such an exciting video! Great work Juan!
Thanks 😘
Always find your tutorials so relaxing 😌

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures "swoon"
this is just phenomenal! i wish to paint like this one day...... perhaps only in my dreams!
It's all about practice
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures i am just finishing 20 imperial guard infantry i have painted 60 of them so far i am loving it!
Awesome!!
That looks so cool. Amazing work dude.
Thanks
I don't plan on painbting this mini. I don't even have Drukhari. But watched the whole damn video!! Awesome work as always, but i have to ask. What's worse: a simple blue miniature, or this? xD
Lol, that's a tough choice
Loved this vid, stunning work, one of my favourite minis youve painted so far
Thanks 😘
I was really hoping you would have shown painting the stone base as well as the mini!? Excellent job :)
The stone base is the same as the How to Base - Mossy Rocks video
Dude this is my first time painting miniatures and I have to intentionally stop myself from buying and painting drazhar right now just to be like you
Have patience, it's a long journey. Have fun!
Oh man...just got the armor up to the tarradon turquoise. Looks sooo good
YEAH!!! Glad you liked it
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures easy to do any looks fantastic.
❤️
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures finally finishing him up...looks good
Awesome!
Amazing stuff as always!
Thanks
Awesome work again my friend. I love that you are a high level painter, but use the contrast paints to achieve incredible results. I always watch every video and thumbs up, but I don’t always leave a comment, but I will make sure I do. Take care brother!
Thanks 😘

Im totally gonna try this. Looks like Ill need a couple extra contrasts
Awesome!
WOW!!!
Thanks 😘
Ha quedado brutal juan! Y esa mezcla de violeta muy chula. Me quedo con ese momento de "algunos pensaréis que este perfilado es en realidad fino" muy grande jaja
😘
Awesome tutorial! As always ;)
Thanks
Contrast of the ContrastGods.
😘
Another amazing tutorial and mini. Even when I can't paint I love following your videos.
Thanks 😘
Nice!
😘
interesting choice to get what kinda looks like gold by using yellow washed over brass, is there a thought why thats better than just going retributor from the start and contrasting that and highlighting back up?
Just because I wanted to do something different to be honest. I hate to do the same over and over again.
It was very much worth the patience! Thank you very much! Would you consider applying your Eavy Contrast techniques to a Vehicle (maybe a Venom or Raider *wink wink*) or do you find other methods better for Vehicles. Cheers!
No, I won't paint any vehicles sorry. My recommendation is use an airbrush to lay down the contrast layers over large surfaces
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures that's cool! Yeah that's what I would usually do just prying to see if you have any secrets of course haha
This is truly an awesome Painting Guide,it must have took you a very lang Time painting all that Edge Highlights.
Could you paint something from the new Eldar Releases next, like Maughan'Ra or the Eldar Rangers?
I will paint Maugan for sure, stay tuned
First of all, thank you for an amazing video!
Also, I was curious, since your glasses got to the camera. How do you film? It is a GoPro on the head, or you have a steady camera fixed somewhere on the table? Btw. that camera is you using for that clear and detailed picture?
p.s. will come back to Patreon as soon s crazy thing in Europe will finish( have to cut moist of fun stuff nower days 😒😒
I use a camera attached to a Rode Microphone Arm with a tripod ball screw at the end of it. The Camera I use is the Canon M50, I use two lenses depending on the bit, either the 22mm F2 or the 32mm F1.4
I did my transcription of the video so I can follow these steps offline and it came to 1418 words and 3 pages on Word.
That's a lot of work mate!
Lovely video, as always. Did you try Apothecary White on the mask before? Might it give a bit more definition to it?
No, not needed for this one, the purple is enough.
Hi Juan! Impressive job! Please, could you tell us how did you paint all the stones of the base? At least the recipe? They look amazing. Thank you!
There is a video about it, it's linked in the top right corner of the video or just look for
How to Base - Mossy Rocks
Amazing paint job on a difficult miniature!
What paints did you use for the base?
Can't really remember but probably my Mossy Rock tutorial
33:36 : GOD DAMN, MAN. At least, let us say to you that it is amazing. I regret now to say that you are a god.. ;)
😘
When doing the feathering around 9:15, I realized you are very quick on cleaning and wiping the brush. Not to sound like a pervert, but but is there a video with live footage of you wiping your brush? : D
Lol, not really. But yeah you have to be quick, if you stop to think about what to do, it's already too late
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Gotta wipe fast!
I apply that mantra to everything I do
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Jokes aside though: I remember a video from Sergio Calvo and how he rinses and wipes his brush every time before applying new paint, and wiping excess color on a paper towel. That really helped me with controlling colour consistency from the wet palette. It's details like this that can improve painting technique if explained or observed carefully. So I would not mind to see a painting stream or VOD including colour and brush handling, or a video dedicated on that.
I might do that
Great video as always. Question; when you do glazes with colors that have white in them, how do you prevent them from looking chalky?
Being VERY careful, also using medium instead of water if I see problems happening.
Seriously, this one HAS to go in a contest, somewhere
Thanks, it's not really competition level but it's the closest I've done for the channel so far
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures "not competition level" ? WTF.
true it is not competition level BUT do not get me wrong. The techniques used, simple to apply by anybody given time and practice makes for this stunning result! I am sure he can go even further but shows us perfection with these "few" colors and shades/highlights. Hats off master :)
@@hoplahop2388 well, I guarantee you that if I bring this in my country/province, I would won (and be disqualifed because they will know it's not mine ! ;) )
@@maximem.ste-marie3578 I am not saying it won´t win any competition. Depending on level and organiser it may well win of course :) I´d be happy myself to reach this level again, just need to wait to have more spare time to get into painting again :( Seeing your honsety, you will be as goos (or maybe are already) too ;)
Great video. Any tips for a simplified armour scheme on Kabalite warriors or wyches?
Simplified? I don't understand that word
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures not as many layers for a troop model?
Lol, sorry I was joking there.
Maybe I would just skip the Thunderhawk edge highlight and just do Administratum, two layer of thinned down Terradon and the final highlight of Gauss Blaster
Damn amazing tutorial =O
But how did you paint the base? xD
It's explained in the how to base - mossy rocks video, check it out
4:16 what is the rationale behind mixing contrast with medium 2:1 here? Why not apply pure contrast?
Because I don't want it pure, it's too strong .
Question if I may : do you put contrast paints on your wet palette? Does it dilute them if left on there too long? I love the idea of contrast paint but can't stand them instantly drying on dry palettes and am worried about messing up the surface tension by diluting them on a wet palette...
Fantastic video as always by the way
Watch my Contrast Technique video, I use a wet palette all the time.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you
Happy to help
Amazing result, as always. I guess that for the base you used the mossy base technique you posted earlier ? Are you planning to do the triumvirate of Ynead (Yvraine, the Visarch and the Incarnate) ? And what about the Avatar of Khaine when it's released ?
I don't have plans for the Triumvirate, but I do plan to paint the Avatar yes
Hey Juan do you have some alternative brushes the ones you have linked for thos video are banned in my country any recommendation would be great
Raphael 8404
OMG
😘
Hi Juan. A couple of questions. What paint(s) did you use for the ruined stones on the base? And, could you please provide with a link for the dropper bottles you use for contrast paints? Thanks in advance!
Buenas Juan. Un par de preguntas. Qué pinturas(s) has usado para las piedras en ruinas de la peana? Y ¿podrías darnos un enlace a los goteros que usas para las contrast? Muchas gracias de antemano.
The rocks are done like explained here
ua-cam.com/video/GjzZ9rHYkq0/v-deo.html
And the droppers are this ones:

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures ¡Muchísimas gracias!
Gracias a ti guapetón 😘
Do you thin your paint like a glaze when you're doing the edge highlight with thunderhawk and administratum? I'm having a "chunky" result with normal edge, even thinning the paint.
Just enough for it flow well, that's all. It's all about practice and using the tip of the brush. You will get there
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you very much for replying! I'll try my best, guess I just need to practice a lot! Keep up the good work, you're doing awesome jobs!
Do you have a tutorial on how you did the base?
It's essentially the Mossy Rocks video. Check it out
