This particular performances underlines something I always believed: had Ms. Henderson's career been handled better she could have been America's answer to Julie Andrews. Although she is no less iconic for what she did achieve.
I agree and actually like her voice much more than Julie Andrews. Thank God for UA-cam, I never appreciated how good she was. She certainly had a long, successful career but I wonder if after BB she should have returned to Broadway or focused on being a concert artist. I think the only female Broadway voice of her era that’s comparable was Barbara Cook’s.
I agree. The only stage play I saw in my life before adulthood was "The Sound of Music" in Chicago-- with Christopher Plummer and Florence Henderson. I was so enthralled with the performance that I refused to see the film for a long time.
I actually saw Florence Henderson star as Maria in the touring company of Sound of Music when I lived in Los Angeles in the late 1970's. She did a wonderful job. I understand that she had already done the show in 1961 replacing Mary Martin for the touring company.
Close...Florence ORIGINATED the 1961 First National Tour; Martin never took the show on tour. The 1978 production was not a tour...but a Los Angeles Civic Light Opera production. My favorite part of that show??? Eldest boy Friedrich was played by oddball actor Crispin Glover in one of his first acting jobs...
Wow, that was incredible. I adore her at Password show and I did not know she could sing like this until she mentioned that she will perform to support the nuns that needed help. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video to let me discover an amazing talent that I did not know of beside "The Brady Bunch". Such a lovely lady. XO
Years ago I bought an old house in Dallas Texas from the estate of the original owner. Much to my surprise, I found a box in the Attic that contained a plethora of Florence Henderson memorabilia from the 1950s the person who live there was obviously a huge fan way back then.
That's interesting! I once entered a poetry contest where the Library of Congress used her name/likeness for promotion. I don't know if it was actually endorsed by her, but the poem (one of my very first written) did make it to an anthology and voiced on a CD. I've always admired Ms. Henderson.
Love Florence Henderson and her role as Carol Brady in the Brady Bunch, she has such a beautiful voice and is such a talented actress. Love the Ed Sullivan show!
Friendly correction: She was from Dale, Indiana (Spencer County). I suppose if want to refer to her as the jewel of Southwestern Indiana, that certainly works! 🙂
in Belcanto (an opera music technique a singer is taught how to hit a note by taking aim at a target like and archer with a bow and arrow. to aim for the pitch and tonal quality and release as the singer nails theri target. Ms. Henderson embraces this technique laced with the best of Musical Theater and what a knockout punch of a performance!
Her biggest career gaffe was to accept the role in "The Brady Bunch." Sure, it made her famous but killed her stage performance & film career. Whatever she did after that was hard to watch because we always think of her as Carol Brady. It took Julie Andrews nearly two decades to get past her goody-two-shoes image, only because her first two movies were huge hits, so people thought of her as Mary Poppins or Maria von Trapp. The mold was finally shattered when she went topless in "SOB." Clearly Florence wasn't quite as amazing as Julie (singing) but her career could have done better with an agent who really worked for her.
They all understood the risks. As Shirley Jones often has said, she was told that by lots of people before she took the Shirley Partridge role that it would kill (her word) her movie career and she said it did do just that. But she had young children at the time and wanted work in which she didn't need to travel constantly so she could have time with her kids. She has often said over the years that she has no regrets. I don't know if Florence was in a similar situation concerning her choices at the time (she did raise four children) and how she felt about it long-term, unless I've missed something...
Her and Shirley Jones were close friends, in real life, both classically trained singers and starred as matriarch mother figures in two pop sitcoms of the early 70s. RIP Florence Henderson you had it all.
How did she manage to hide this talent from the masses.
She is absolutely beautiful in and out.
She didn't. We knew about it...

Totally agree! She was very talented, but by 1980, her career was over. She and whoever guided her made poor choices
Having starred in the Touring company of SOM in the early 60s I wonder why she wasn’t considered for the 1965 film version? Or was she ?

I had no idea she was this caliber of singer. Thank you for shsring.
She was also in a touring production of 'The Sound of Music'.
Mrs Brady knocking them dead. What a great voice. Miss her. RIP
A great voice and a great singer! Wow!
@@irthlingz Very merry Christmas
Saw her as an opening act for Jim Nabors at The Parkard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio. They were both gave us our money's worth.
I saw her for many years as the opening for Jim Nabors at the Indy 500 every May, too.

One of America’s favorite TV moms! Such a classic!

Wow! Nice job. Never knew she had a good voice!!
Florence was sooo versatile an actor. TV, movie, stage. Wesson Oil adverts (many yrs.)
Just saw this on TV. I had no idea. Magnificent.

I'm in tears like I'm listening to Julie herself.... BRAVO Ms. Henderson ♥

Not my kind of music but she does have a great voice.
What's your favorite? Honky-tonk?
Thrilling. She always was
Tastes in shower curtains have changed over the years. You couldn't wear that today.
Always liked her! She was a lot more than Carol Brady.
Taking a huge chance singing two of Julie Andrews' iconic songs.
Well...she WAS Maria BEFORE Julie was Maria...
She did do a movie called the song of norway, which is similar to the sound of music
What on Earth was this lady doing on Brady Bunch when she had a voice like that??
Flo was a dime for sure. I’ll buy her a drink one day on the other side
Wow, almost as good as Julie, if not better.

A pre Mrs Carol Brady
She’s was hot in the partridge family! Great voice
She was on The Brady Bunch. Shirley Jones was on The Partridge Family

I think that was Shirley Jones not Flores Henderson

Not as good as Julie Andrews but pretty decent -
Не помню эту песню, но понравилось! 👏
oh no guys that hoodie is way too much money come on 100 + dollars for a hoodie omg what is it made of gold and silver ??
Shirley Jones is much better.
And a lot prettier.
Critics choice.. 🍒
But lacks Henderson’s warmth and not nearly as likeable.
