2019 Asset Champion Award: Caring Elementary School Climate - Cumberland Elementary School

Cumberland Elementary School, as part of the Sunnyvale Elementary School District, has created a caring school community of engaged parents, supportive staff, and empowered students. Caring is shown through the intentional way youth are supported during out of classroom time. Recess can be a challenge for youth, but Cumberland utilizes buddy benches, clubs, reading areas, and lots of caring adults to build positive spaces. Student philanthropy also demonstrates caring as a significant part of the Cumberland culture. Philanthropy is practiced year round with all grade levels involved and the students being engaged as leaders. Together, this caring community has raised funds for the Sunnyvale Magical Bridges Playground for kids with all abilities, police dog vests, the Humane Society, and numerous toy and food drives.
